What's interesting about this list is how thoroughly Platonic it is, from Proust being the most explicit Platonist between Melville and Hart Crane. Hart Crane agreed with Plato in that the experience of words is more important than mere propositions. Melville is more Shakespearean than Platonic at his strongest. At his weakest, with Mardi, he's a Platonist. It's hard to qualify Shakespeare as being Platonic, but when you take Plato as a dramatist of reason, with "The Republic" being his single best tragic work (ask and I will elaborate), the analogy is possible.
