In terms of research he's not, he didn't publish any influential papers. But he was great as a communicator to the public, which he unfortunately neglected for his atheism advocacy. The ancestor's tale, for example, is an excellent explanation of the common ancesty of life that makes it intuitive for laypeople.

Dawkins completely changed the paradigm in genetics. He's massively influential. The Selfish Gene is up there with Elements and Principia Mathematica in terms of paradigm shifts. Dawkins basically built the theory of modern genetics and biology from the ground up. I mean that literally, he took Genetic Selection from a fringe theory and utterly crushed Group Selection. He shifted the worldview of an entire discipline in like, twenty years.

By comparison, it took something like two centuries for atomic theory to be accepted.

I read The Selfish Gene recently and it was pretty decent. A good look at how genetics and evolution works put in a way a layman can understand (although I must be less than a layman because I did not fully understand it).
Originally I thought it would be a look at how living creatures only ever act in their own self interest and are not capable of acting altruistically but it's not really about that. It does put forward that evolution is pushed through individual selection rather then group selection and the selfishness of creatures does occur within those groups. However, for families it is possible as genetically your children are half you.

Regardless, I found the most interest stuff to be about actual animals like the Cuckoo bird and bees. I would recommend it, I think the chapter on memes was important also but again, I feel like I missed something and would have to go back and try again to really understand it.

I used to love "the selfish gene" and thought it was interesting and compelling. Until I read David Stove's takedown Darwinian Fairytales, which points out that Dawkins is postulating a sort of demonology where genes are demons. Then you realize how transparently silly the whole thing is. Also the whole "meme" thing -people have ideas. Amazing revelation. Ideas can pass from person to person; I wonder how it's possible nobody thought of this before.
