I have this theory that the great modern playwrights are now film directors...

>> No.2103427

you are confusing writing and directing
(as well as play- or screenwriting and theatre or film direction)
but I see what you are getting at

Dude. I am not /sci/ and you know NOTHING about plays.
First. His name is HANEKE not HANAKE.

Second. HE HASN'T EVER WRITTEN A POPULAR PLAY. HE HAD DIRECTED SEVERAL THOUGH.

This caracalla idiot is trying to prove how knowledgeable he is by reading wiki articles, methinks.

Three points to gryffindor for that stroke of genius...

>HE HASN'T EVER WRITTEN A POPULAR PLAY. HE HAD DIRECTED SEVERAL THOUGH.
Oh, brilliant, that's halfway to a concession... He also writes his films..

To further examine the theory, are there good playwrights writing good plays at this point in the 21st Century?

>> No.2103515

>>2103487
I went to see a collection of short contemporary plays put on by a group of drama students at my school. It was straight up gimmicky pointlessly abstract shit. Stuff like people riding segways around on stage while talking about the scientific method. I went to another a few years later, and it was the same sort of stuff.

To be fair, I imagine % good short plays / % good full-length plays is even lower than % good short stories / % good novels. I don't want to give up on theater, but I remained to be convinced there's anything worthwhile happening there anymore.

This is interesting and really funny. i don't know of any good published playwrights either...

>> No.2103530

A lot of the stuff Haneke is doing on the screen wouldn't work in play format. See: anything in the Seventh Continent. A film about voyeurism and its relation to the audience like Funny Games would however be quite effective on stage, I think

Some of the elements that could work for theatre in his films, though, are often cribbed from other people, like Bergman for instance

Well, he is writing for cinema, y'know, and that he was or wasn't was never a particular contention of the theory; his visuality up until recently was pretty workmanlike, thoguh; then he got those great wide shots in Cache and the rest is history...
