I am reading the Left Hand of Darkness. In my head canon the protagonist is white and there is nothing Ursula can do about it. Also there is literally nothing to him to indicate that he is black other than he himself describing his skin colour, other than that he thinks and acts like a white man.

It's like she just writes a normal character then says: He is also black BTW. Like it's going to make a difference, especially in sff setting where no contemporary politics exist. So it think it intellectually lazy to praise Ursula for including POC characters.

Children of Time is a decent read, but on one aspect it did fail. Orson Scott Card is indeed right in that stories about a Generational Ship are, ultimately, about the life on the ship, not about the destination. The problem is that Tchaikovsky wanted to have his cake and eat it too, so he made the destination (spider planet) the climax of the story. This turned out to be a blunder, as the life on the Generational ship is actually more interesting than the spider civilization and its evolution.

If Tchaikovsky didn't spend half the space building up the spider civilization this story would have turned out horribly.

I may have worded my post in a way that is prone to be misunderstood. Don't get me wrong I'm against identity politics. Its just that many have said Ursula to be kind of subversive feminist author but now that I read her it doesn't seem to be the case and I laugh at the notion that her protagonist is in any way POC, except cosmetically.

>> No.21022719

>>21022709
Well you seem to have this idea that a black person inherently thinks and behaves differently than a white person when most behavioural differences tend to come down to culture which wouldn't be nearly as much of a factor in a more openly diverse fantasy world. Like, fuck, Discworld has a few black people but it's hardly more than a thing about them because most humans in Discworld are solidly together because specism is more entertaining.

>> No.21022749

>>21022719
In normal fiction setting, this is the belief of those in the left and they extrapolate these ideas to SFF also. It is not my idea to think thus, I have merely entertained their thoughts as I have read this book and found this kind of thinking irrelevant in most SFF. It is not that I think black skin dictates any behaviour, inter alias it is just a cosmetic thing if it is not also assigned some cultural background like being African.

Le Guin has said some pretty outrageous things in person so the aversion is warranted. Weird race fetishism is sometimes more creepy and uncomfortable than garden variety racism.
I never really liked her books but I chalk that down to the quality of translation and the style, i'm sure they're decent.
The thing is even if somebody's views "aren't in their stories" that's pretty bad too, you end up being a JK Rowling who wants to redefine the context of things after they've been written. It's the kind of cowardly approach to artistry (rampant in Modern Art) that needs to be criticised, where you can sit on the fence about your own work.
I'm not going to whine about Scott Card refusing to accept every modern progressive talking point because his books clearly reflect he has certain beliefs, with Le Guin it's way weirder.

Gibson's novels are kinda bad in a lot of ways, but they have such a strong sense of themselves and their atmosphere that they're definitely worth reading.

Having said that, I think cyberpunk is so situated in the specific culture of the late 80s/early 90s that a lot of the specific feel of it is aging beyond comprehension.

Also: in terms of the "Trilogy", they really are all pretty much the same book.

What's a book I can read that will teach me about literary devices like "catalogue", "metonymy", "allusion", and "synecdoche"? I know what those individual terms mean when it comes to literature, but I'd like a book that covers as many things like that as I'm able to learn about. I am looking for something that will help me notice literary styles in authors.

I tried reading Terry Eagleton's Literary Theory, but that's actually a book on the broader topic of actual "literary theory" which seems to border "critical theory" and has more of a sociological analysis of literature (bordering leftist deconstructions of literature along structuralist, Marxist, and feminist readings). This is not what I'm looking for.

Hurin is more detailed than Silmarillion, when it comes to the events depicted. I'd personally recommend it, as you get to see various characters from Silmarillion dramatized. Reading about the Girdle of Melian is one thing, but seeing it be used in a story is another entirely. Keep in mind that it's a tragedy, so don't expect any happy ending, although you do get to read Tolkien's retelling of the Sigurd myth.

Thoughts on Jack McDevitt? I read The Engines of God and Chindi many years ago, enjoyed them, but it's been so long I don't remember much except finding the mystery and scope of the alien life intriguing. Looking for some similarly grand space novels.

>character A in a desperate battle for survival, what will happen next?
>swap to character B basketweaving for 400 pages
>finally starting to get into it, it's the finals of the basketweaving tournament and he's up aggainst thegordian weave, the most complicated of all weaving patterns!
>swap back to character A, there's been a six week timeskip and the battle is over, everyone spends 200 pages talking about how epic and interesting it is and having occasional flashbacks
>throw book into the fireplace

The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind. The MC's main enemy is a legion of dominatrixes wearing skin tight leather fetish suits who want to capture and torture him with magical dildos. Also his love interest has magical femdom powers. And later in the series he meets a coven of magical femdom witches.

Also it was ok at first but at some point realization hits that most of his stories and plot development are basically mc going to some elderly gatherings and jusg talking to old pensioner tier people. 3 main ones, maybe 5 if it's a big book, I'll allow up to like 7 or so if it's meant to be a big epic fantasy deal, and intermittent smaller ones are fine for me. Anything more than that and it gets a bit much. I tend to prefer ones with only one major POV and some side POVs though.
