Children of Time is a decent read, but on one aspect it did fail. Orson Scott Card is indeed right in that stories about a Generational Ship are, ultimately, about the life on the ship, not about the destination. The problem is that Tchaikovsky wanted to have his cake and eat it too, so he made the destination (spider planet) the climax of the story. This turned out to be a blunder, as the life on the Generational ship is actually more interesting than the spider civilization and its evolution.

If Tchaikovsky didn't spend half the space building up the spider civilization this story would have turned out horribly.

Le Guin has said some pretty outrageous things in person so the aversion is warranted. Weird race fetishism is sometimes more creepy and uncomfortable than garden variety racism.
I never really liked her books but I chalk that down to the quality of translation and the style, i'm sure they're decent.
The thing is even if somebody's views "aren't in their stories" that's pretty bad too, you end up being a JK Rowling who wants to redefine the context of things after they've been written. It's the kind of cowardly approach to artistry (rampant in Modern Art) that needs to be criticised, where you can sit on the fence about your own work.

I'm looking at the Wikipedia for the extended Dune universe. Having the prequels for the great houses and the imperial bureaucracies makes sense and could be interesting, but why the fuck would you write another story about Paul other than making money? His character arc was done and he's been analyzed to hell and back by every undergraduate. Why not write a story about Ghanima? She's everything Leto is but without the sandtrout armor so she has opportunities to experience and do things Leto can't, and she doesn't have any content past Children.

Gibson's novels are kinda bad in a lot of ways, but they have such a strong sense of themselves and their atmosphere that they're definitely worth reading.

Having said that, I think cyberpunk is so situated in the specific culture of the late 80s/early 90s that a lot of the specific feel of it is aging beyond comprehension.

Also: in terms of the "Trilogy", they really are all pretty much the same book.

What's a book I can read that will teach me about literary devices like "catalogue", "metonymy", "allusion", and "synecdoche"? I know what those individual terms mean when it comes to literature, but I'd like a book that covers as many things like that as I'm able to learn about. I am looking for something that will help me notice literary styles in authors.

I tried reading Terry Eagleton's Literary Theory, but that's actually a book on the broader topic of actual "literary theory" which seems to border "critical theory" and has more of a sociological analysis of literature (bordering leftist deconstructions of literature along structuralist, Marxist, and feminist readings). This is not what I'm looking for.

Hurin is more detailed than Silmarillion, when it comes to the events depicted. I'd personally recommend it, as you get to see various characters from Silmarillion dramatized. Reading about the Girdle of Melian is one thing, but seeing it be used in a story is another entirely. Keep in mind that it's a tragedy, so don't expect any happy ending, although you do get to read Tolkien's retelling of the Sigurd myth.

I'd say read the first two Hyperion books. The first book is slower, basically 6 mini-stories about the various characters that find themselves on the pilgrimage. Then book 2 explodes, turning the characters established into a scale rivalling space operas. Especially you'll like it if you agree with the Consul and more traditional political messaging.

Finished this. I liked it. Though there really wasn't any direct Miura influence I could detect. DEFINITELY a Sandersonian magic system which I liked much better than any of Sanderson's magic systems because all of his magic systems gradually boil down to giving his characters anime super powers. This magic system was more subtle and indirect.

Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World by Jack Weatherford. Very good read even though the author has a massive hard on for the Mongols. I get the need to dismiss myths perpetuated by other cultures but at times I felt myself wondering if he was going to far in the other direction.

If you are talking about botf, then you have read less than half of the Malazan content. The other books are hardly spinoffs, two authors literally designed the world together and Erikson himself has prequels which deal with a lot of the ancient history lore as well as a sequel that came out earlier this yeah that reveals still more about the world we didn't know.

Between Two Fires is one of my all-time favorite fantasy books, yet I think the author is a dumb cunt and I dislike everything about him.

I don't know, anon. The assassin book was shit. The Brandon Sanderson books were okay when it got to the action parts. The rest seems pretty drawn out and dry.
The first two HP are pretty good for atmosphere and introducing everything. Third is boring then it eventually just turns into them going for a long walk like LOTR.

The earlier books were ok, but I tried reading Firebird and it was just a disconnected mess, I think he started going senile around that time.
Also it was ok at first but at some point realization hits that most of his stories and plot development are basically mc going to some elderly gatherings and jusg talking to old pensioner tier people.
