It's three sentences, but I like the directness with which DH Lawrence starts The Ladybird:
>How many swords had Lady Beveridge in her pierced heart! Yet there always seemed room for another. Since she had determined that her heart of pity and kindness should never die.

Murphy is a more obvious classic:
>The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new.

I find it hard to find a books first sentence to be good. It feels wrong to judge a book on its opening sentence. That being said, I prefer it when the book goes into something about the characters thoughts or previous actions. Like lolita for example, or the first chapter of the red and the black. Both are just a look into what kind of person the character is. But I'm just some random person so I'm not sure my opinion has any merit.

Monstrous the first vertebrate that succeeded in standing on

Let's compile a list of the best first sentences, ordered by word count. Here's a suggestion for the first twelve:

1. London. [Bleak House]
2. Who's there? [Hamlet]
3. Call me Ishmael. [Moby-Dick]
4. Elmer Gantry was drunk. [Elmer Gantry]
5. I am an invisible man. [Invisible Man]
6. It was love at first sight. [Catch-22]
7. It was the day my grandmother exploded. [The Crow Road]
8. I write this sitting in the kitchen sink. [I Capture the Castle]
9. Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. [Lolita]
10. The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new. [Murphy]
11. The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there. [The Go-Between]
12. In the town, there were two mutes and they were always together. [The Heart is a Lonely Hunter]

I'm sure someone can suggest some improvements/additions.
