This. The mainstream hates Catholics because they are angry leftist women, and the idea of giving birth to healthy children instead of aborting them, or submitting to a devoted
and exclusive husband - are considered the greatest possible horror to these creatures, as it impedes their girlboss grindset of answering emails all day.

Moreover, this is not even ideological, but genetic. The same Puritans that had their moral panics in early America about French Catholic villages engaging in "dancing," and would subsequently burn down your Catholic village if they suspected you of dancing. These same Puritans had kids, and their n-th great grandchildren inherited this moral mass movement psychology (progressive leftist doctrine), but they also probably inherited a gene-deep hatred of Catholicism.

As an Italian-American, I just have to let you Protestants know - Yes, I am loyal to the Pope. Yes, I am going to replace your democracy with a hereditary Latin monarchy. Yes, I am going to force your daughters back in the home. Yes, I am going to criminalize homosexuality. Yes, you were right to fear me and burn down my villages. I will burn down your homo-democracy.

SS frustrated me at first by keeping the setting so vague but I feel like it worked well in the end. If you wanted a straightforward story about a guy exploring a spooky jungle planet there are probably a hundred sff books that do just that. With SS (especially the "who the fuck is actually telling this story?" gimmick) the whole thing feels dreamlike and ethereal, which is what I liked the most about the weirder parts of New Sun.

I do think that the lack of 1st-person was a big reason Long Sun didn't connect as well, it's hard to really express the deeper sides of characters. I felt like I gained a better understanding of Silk just from Horn gushing about him in SS than all 4 books of LS where he's the focal point.

To be fair these books are written from the perspective of a person in the universe and those characters give lots of spurious reasonings for things. At one point in Short Sun the author supposes that lighter objects fall more slowly than heavier ones and he gives the example of a feather falling more slowly than a stone. But as a reader you know that's not how gravity works, and you know that Gene Wolfe himself doesn't think this is how gravity works. This applies to all of the philosophical wankery as well.

This perception is why Protestantism or the spirit of Protestantism completely won the religious war. There's no way to make rite and miracle based religious practices work in modernity. Funnily enough in the 17th century some Puritans tried to make mass catalogues of everything that happened in the world to prove that God's hand was rationally, that is, scientifically, perceptible when put under academic scrutiny. Obviously that never worked out but you can see what an attempt like that represents. Then Protestant religion got conflated and confused with productivity and progress by some process I don't understand. But what that ended up with was stuff like B Franklin's fanatical diatribe against debtors and the infamous "work ethic", and also generalized political whiggery

I'm not making a statement about Catholicism, I'm just saying Wolfe has the soul of a white man which means he's fundamentally polytheistic, and that you see it in his stories too. Nowhere does he denigrate polytheism despite his Catholicism, it's just an acknowledgement that they're false and God in the monotheistic sense is higher.
But why does he does this? Because culture comes from the polytheism. If he didn't venerate it to some degree, there'd be no stories to tell. Monotheism is intolerably boring. It's all, oh God's just everything, has no characteristics, but is ultimately Good, created everything, the Truth, eternal white light, blah blah blah. Nobody can enjoy life, believing that. I kinda agree with you on this. The logical conclusion of rigorous monotheism is unironically just being some kind of individual stuck in their own head going about life as pilgrims waiting for death. Without stuff like forces, fates, entities, prophecies and such the world loses its color. Christians and post-Christians get scared of attributing causal power to any of those things because of their primal fear of things that come from "outside of God". When chopping down holy trees and toppling idols Christians themselves show their confused reasoning, they can't decide if they're destroying inert matter of if they're battling demons. They'll usually characterize their enemies as being silly and being satanic in the same breath, that's one I particularly like.
However I don't really think any of this is about the "soul of the white man" or something. East Asians seem more like natural polytheists than we do honestly

God damn that is one pretty book shelf.
Pro tip: when you buy shoes or sneakers, save the silica gel packs that come in the box, and place them in decorative little opaque vases or ornaments with an open lid (just enough to hide the fact that you've put silica gel packs, and so they look pretty).
They will draw excess moisture out of the air, so that mold and fungus doesn't have as easy of a time getting into and eating the paper of the books.
You should also keep them away from direct windows and sunlight to avoid sunbleaching the covers.
You don't have to install tinted glass over your bookshelf, you can simply have a reading room with a good thick curtain, whenever it is not in use.

I work in the biggest independent bookstore in Montreal. Lafferty books are basically impossible for us to get. Almost none of his compendium are still in print.
I have a special relationship with another used book seller and he knows to contact me whenever he finds one - not a word in 5 years.
It's almost like Gaiman intentionally doesn't want you to read Lafferty's stuff.
R. A. Lafferty was Gene Wolfe's favourite author, as stated before in an interview.

He did not modify them.
In 2011, Rafferty's family couldn't pay the bills and put the rights to all of his work up for auction.
Neil Gaiman, through the magazine publication he ran at the time, bought the rights to all of R. A. Lafferty's work in 2011, because no one else could offer a similar price.
Since then, Gaiman has not made any reprints or new runs of the books.
He simply bought the rights to Lafferty's works, and is sitting on them.
Original Lafferty books are becoming rare to find - some don't even have a digital pdf scan available on the internet.
I came across this problem when I wanted a copy of his historical work on the fall of Rome "Alaric: The Day the World Ended."
I could not find a single new, used, or pdf copy (I would've even paid Lulu or the local bookbinder lady to make me a reproduction for my personal library, from just the pdf).
Nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
Gene Wolfe cites R. A. Lafferty as his single favourite author, and his biggest inspiration.
R. A. Lafferty is also one of G.R.R.M.'s inspirations.
And (supposedly) one of Gaiman's favourites.
And yet ... over 11 years later, and Gaiman has not re-printed Lafferty's work.
And the original novels just become rarer ... and rarer ... and harder to find.
Sam Hyde is a Lafferty fan, and has said he suspects Gaiman is doing this because he's a Jew and Lafferty (like Wolfe) is another devout sci-fi Catholic.

https://benedictinstitute.org/2018/02/r-lafferty-greatest-catholic-novelist-never-heard/

My personal favourite story of Lafferty's is "The Six Fingers of Time."

It is about a man who discovers one morning that time has slowed down for him. Water does not flow, food does not cook, and people and cars move at a snail's pace, and barely seem to notice him (like a blur).

Childishly, the man begins to use his powers to play pranks on people, and get away with doing a day's worth of office work in 20 minutes.

However, soon he begins mentally aging and maturing - and also discovers a conspiracy of a race of six-fingered men that have been secretly ruling humanity since the Babylonian days of the creation myth.

These six fingered men can move even faster than him, because he only has a slight variant of the mutation that gives you an extra finger.

The main character then goes on to study every single field of human development, - physics, math, history, dead languages. Going so far as to haunt museums and libraries so as to analyze clay Babylonian tablets.

He is doing this in order to try and beat the six-fingered men, and beat the advanced aging disease that his powers have inflicted him with.

The moment he discovers the secret to living forever with his powers, free from consequences - he lays down to watch a sunset, and dies from chronic old age ... at merely 30-something years.

He also starts haunting women with his powers, but because he's aging extra fast - he can only get attracted to mature women with similar life experience. He develops a fetish for grannies. So he eventually progresses with his love interests until he's ghost-dating this 90 year old great-grandmother. I found this very amusing.

The humour is dry, and crisp and pure and good. The imagination to the story is sufficient to make it intriguing and invest me.

I only know of this story because of a html archive on Project Gutenberg. Haven't been able to find a copy irl.

Abortion is a human sacrifice ritual, and the most powerful known to exist. It was invented by eugenicists within the occult to curry favor with Satan, while also gaining his protection for their war mongering, usury, and industrial scale manipulation of people's minds.

Why is abortion such a powerful form of ritual human sacrifice? Because it involves the most defenseless victim conceivable - an unborn child - being willfully murdered by the very person most spiritually bound to love and protect them, their own mothers. These ritualized murders are carried out in a nonchalant, routine way, as a means of facilitating hedonistic apathy, laziness, and convenience - the magic is in symbolically placing ten seconds of physical pleasure above the value of a human life. It symbolizes evil, within cruelty, within evil. It proffers that a few seconds of vaginal contractions mean more than human life, your own child, and it does this using the greatest symbol of love and compassion - a mother - satanically inverted into spiritually numbed, unfeeling executioners.

So the next time you see a woman of the West screeching into the camera about her rights, on the steps of some federal building, look into her eyes and understand that you're looking into the eyes not of a simple murderer, but of a demon, the literal definition of evil. And understand that this steady stream of death she inflicts upon the unborn is what power's the elite's satanic karma, and in turn enables their ever tightening grip on our nation, our society, our culture, and our very lives.

If you intend to win, you have to understand, and take away, the true source of their power. And if this all seems like mysticism to you, consider why this is, what media taught you that, and who directed that media to do so.

Science fiction mixed with Irish storytelling and American tall tales and a bit of postmodernism. You can get by without mentioning his deep traditional Catholicism since most of the time it's nearly invisible unless you know to watch for it.

Also one of my favorite books by him is The Fall of Rome which is somewhat misleading as it's a combination of real history and classic Lafferty fictional tangents that interdigitate with the narrative. A solid and fun read.

>Olympius, in the name of the Emperor Honorius, ordered the forces in Bologna to take the field against Alaric, on peril of the death of their families. The generals sent word that they could not find the forces of Alaric. The scouts from Bologna silently saluted the Goths of Alaric as they went by, but they could not find them.

The first thing you're gonna get asked is how good your scanners will be so be thinking about that.

Would print shops even be able to do a professional scan of the book?

Best thing to do would be to go ahead and make an ePub version of it. I can do it pretty easily with nothing but simple pictures (you could use your phone if you want) to work from, which would be much easier for you instead of trying to scan the damn thing, but I'm not sure how much free time I'd have to dedicate to it. How long is the book in pages?

Actual scans of the book would be very nice to have for archival purposes, though. Maybe you should see if Internet Archive would scan if for you? I'm pretty sure they have a program where they'll scan it if you mail it to them.

gateway has already made epubs of most of his work and they’re available on Zlibrary. That said it would be nice to have some of his old editions and his more obscure work—like that incomplete autobiographical book that I can’t remember the name of— available in a digital format too. Hell if you get some good advice from the anons here and follow through with it you might actually help prolong the legacy of this man who we all admire so much. Maybe it’s just the scotch but I’m starting to feel a little warm inside. Good luck to you, friend. I’ll be looking out for your thread
