TWI up to 6.62ish
I finally got around to going back and reading the Daquin game arc and the two following Baleros interludes.
I've gotta say I'm growing fond of the students' squad. I was really not feeling it at the beginning, just another group of characters that I wouldn't hear more of for 2000+ pages, but after skipping said chapters and just getting my fill of Izril and Chandrar, I'm starting to warm up to Baleros, although I'm still a bit torn up on its Earther group. Feels like they've stagnated a bit, although I think I have myself to blame for that. Their set up made me think that their group would have a more litRPG-ish progress like the first Laken chapters to break up a bit from the more regular fantasy style from the rest of the chapters.

A few more notes from last time I posted (after the witch arc I think?):
-Finally got some insight into Peril as a character and a bit of his ambitions, I think I kinda see where it's going with his parallels to Pisces, him staying his disciple for a while but eventually confronting him and proving with the power of friendship or some shit that there's another way and that Necromacy can become respected/tolerated or something of that note. I'm quite worried about Pisces and what's gonna happen when everyone inevitably ends up finding out. I like how he humbled a bit after the Montressa encounter and the shopping trip with Selys, hope they can patch things out and see more of the real Pisces that keeps hiding behind his (now broken) mask.
-Toren has FINALLY heard about Erin being alive. I have a feeling it's gonna end terribly for her but it should make for some interesting developments. I wonder if their two personalities will split, fuse and make a full character or something similar? I'm kinda fond of the female persona.
-Last batch of Chandrar chapters were really enjoyable. The climax of Tiqr's war was a bit anticlimatic, but the future involvement of Illivere seems like it's gonna be interesting. Khelt is a really fun addition, the portrayal of Necromacy in a somewhat positive light for a change was nice and King Fetohep is a cool character.

Overall, it feels like some plotlines are gonna start to intersect a bit soon, people are moving and meeting, big players getting more involved, looking forward to it. I only hope we get some more Terandria soon, seems like a kino continent.

My SFF TBR for the Month of September

Salamandastron by Brian Jacques
Shadow & Claw by Gene Wolf
The Gunslinger by Stephen King

So far I am enjoying the Gunslinger more than I thought I would. Anons spit on King daily and I don't anybody irl that is a fan of his but he is good at keeping the reader engaged and riddled with anxiety.

I am literally only reading Wolfe for the threads. I have been listening to the Redwall series on audio at work again and its even better now as an adult.

The bit where the dragon wants a big pile of gold like Smaug but has to make do with whatever it can get was amusing if not outright funny. I've read the first one and haven't gotten around to the second. I didn't dislike Gideon, but it felt weird because... It's functionally a story where the protagonist matters very little. Gideon is basically a bit part in a grander story she doesn't actually care much for, which is interesting in a way, but combine that with Gideon having a vow of silence for much of the book, it makes the POV character feel almost pointless.

Nobody's going to know what I'm talking about, but Larry Niven wrote a series of stories in a world where magic is a natural resource that can be depleted. A wizard created an artifact that had an enchantment on it that would just spin it faster and faster until it used up all the mana in the area, thereby ending any other spells or enchantments around. I thought it was pretty clever.

I'll discuss the ones I've read.
>Randidly Ghosthound: Utterly mediocre, plodding and boring, somehow manages to be about nothing, only saving factor is Randidly himself is kind of a fun dork protagonist
>Reincarnated As A Farmer: Fun enough for what it is, protagonist just constantly does his best to avoid farming and tries to game the system, which actually works out, plot is a bit "stuff just kinda happening" though
>Mother of Learning: Arc 1 is a plodding mess, Arc 2 is decent but suffers from Zorian refusing to interact with people for more than a couple loops, Arc 3 is actually pretty well put-together, if a little rushed through, but it involves a proper dynamic with the cast instead of just Zorian being himself and it's a decent enough dynamic at that
>Defiance of the Fall: Starts off okay, pretty strong world-building but characters let it down immensely, Zac is just utterly bland and boring
>Tower of Somnus: It's fine, it's not that good, it has a decent enough concept but it almost feels like the two 'halves' of the book don't really correlate at all, so you have the LitRPG stuff in her dreams and then the real world stuff and they're only linked by her abilities
>Primal Hunter: Overall pretty good so far, a bit basic but Jake is a solid enough protagonist and it has relatively good characters beside him, world-building is as bare-bones as you can get and the system is really boringly done
>Full Murderhobo: A more comedic one, some of the jokes fall flat due to being memes that're out-dated even by the publishing, but it's fun to see "Castaway but it's a LitRPG" go down in the first book, though Luke as a protagonist is actually the least interesting of the four main characters
And that's it from that chart. I know of a few of them, and have some on my "maybe will read eventually" list, but , eh, we'll see.

Zendegi - Greg Egan (2010)

The most important thing to know coming into this, especially if you've only read Egan's most popular novels, is that you ought adjust your expectations. This is a small scale character focused novel where the scientific ideas serve more for the character's story than the other way around. There are two POVs. One is a 46 year old Australian male journalist and the other is an 25 year old Iranian female researcher whose mother fled with her from Iran. The first third from his perspective is a political thriller about an Iranian revolution in 2012 that overthrows the theocracy. From hers it's scientific research and trying to decide to the course of her life. The synopsis for this book leaked shortly before Egan went on a research trip to Iran and he was concerned that the government wouldn't look kindly on an author whose book included the overthrow of their government, but nothing came of it. The latter two thirds are a near-future speculative fiction character drama, which from his perspective have a focus on parenting, mortality, and social mores. From hers it's developing better proxies (NPCs) for Zendegi-ye-Behtar (Better Life), their spherical VR rigs and gaming platform, and the ethics involved with doing so.

At the end of the first chapter, a character tells the protagonist: "...if we spend all our time gazing at the wonders ahead without remembering where we’re standing right now, we’re going to trip and fall flat on our faces, over and over again." This is foreshadowing for the rest of the novel and a cautionary warning, which the book as a whole could be also considered as. There is considerable criticism leveled against various futurists, who aren't named, but two seem evident to me. Those two being Ray Kurzweil and his arguably religious reverence for the Singularity and Aubrey de Grey's supplement regimen.

There's a scene of a person buying a Salman Rushdie book in Farsi in Iran without any problems, which considering the recent attempted assassination of Rushdie by an Iranian, brought a different perspective of that scene for me. There are also extended VR scenes of historical fantasy, which I understood the purpose of, but even so, weren't really to my preference. There are a few, mostly superficial, similarities with the ongoing TV series Pantheon, which is based on some of Ken Liu's short fiction.

I've seen several write that the ending feels abrupt and unfinished, which is because it is, for the ideas at least. The story that Egan wanted to tell about the character's lives though seems finished though to me. Egan later wrote three stories for the ideas in Zendegi though, which are: Bit Players, 3-adica, and Instantiation. Even though this isn't what Egan usually writes, let alone what most of his readers may want, it was a worthwhile look at a near future that may have went for too much for naturalism, especially the arbitrary procession of life events.

Rating: 3.5/5

I haven't read Vigil's Justice, and MoL I generally agree with you on, pacing is off as hell, but it's solid enough by the end of things. Farmer was... I dunno, it felt like it wasn't really 'about' anything in a way? Like I didn't really care about Arnold enough to see what he was doing. The book timeskips too much for me to really settle in on him as a character. Have a favourite that's not on the chart, out of curiosity?

>This Used to be About Dungeons is a comfy slice-of-life adventuring story that occasionally features dungeons. Updates Tuesdays and Thursdays.

>Mostly it's about walking in the woods with a friend, looking for mushrooms to put in your soup, or haggling with the guy selling squash, or taking care of a neglected garden. It's putting some jam on shortbread biscuits. And yes, sometimes you go down into the dungeons with your friends, and you kill monsters there, or disarm traps, but when you come out, you realize you've found the perfect magic item to give to one of the local kids that helped you out when your cat was sick. Look, the dungeons are always going to be there, and sometimes you need to make a journey to one of the Spirit Gates, or make a pilgrimage with the local Cleric of Symmetry to a holy shrine. Your tour through the local dungeons can wait. You'll have rivalries with other groups, and find some dungeon eggs that need to be carefully incubated in case they turn out to be something valuable, and help a friend to build a fishing weir. It reads like a parody but seemed to be dead serious to me. The only reasons I finished it were because it isn't that long and because it was such a mess that I couldn't help myself. It isn't only 1/5 or less because it was just really bad, but not anything worse than that. The only thing I felt afterwards was a sense of wondering why the author thought this was a good idea.
