I understand this issue, but as others have said the New Testament more or less overwrites the old, thus why the reaction to Christ teachings. Old testament Jews existed for a while, but their religion fundamentally changed when they were scattered. Going from priestly judaism to rabbinic judaism, they were no longer the people of Isreal of the old testament, regardless of the fact that they read the Torah, because they could no longer preform the old rites. New ones were formed as an oral system that became the Talmud. Now being this roughly assembled group of writings by countless people over a long length of time, but it is made a directly contrary to Christianity. The longer these two existed separately, the further idealistically apart they drifted.

As for the characters of the old testament being somewhat immoral by modern standards, I think they're worth looking at because they make you question the morality of situations. You can't look through genesis thinking God will come down and directly say his intentions in each part. Take Genesis 38 for example. You, as a Christan, should take affront to the ideals represented, but i don't think the characters are necessarily meant to e held as paragons to be emulated without dealer thought. Also most of the old testament people had to be scooped up from various parts of hell between limbo and Gehenna anyway because God the father is so hard to please.
I unfortunately don't have a alt-right Christian apologetics book, but someone should attempt it.
