Because he realized early on that technique would become the dominant milieu of the modern era. Here's an early article that summarizes his views on technique.

It makes humans stupid. Now in the age of technical society, people see all problems they have as technical problems that can be solved by some technology. This is how absurd humans have become.

I think it was sent directly to the translator who was also translating Technological Society. and later published in the magazine. It was for the Encyclopaedia Britannica Conference on the Technological Order, 1962.

Wagner's critique of Mode (fashion) and the mechanical in his prose works and Der Ring des Nibelungen significantly precede 20th century criticisms of Technik. And is, contrary to what many say, not a 'merely' 19th century investigation of the subject.

WARNING: Ellul mixes his description of technique with his moralizing judgements about it.

His work is of course not useless because the first task is an important necessity for all industrial societies, but the second one is dangerous because some people might take those judgments for facts, embracing them uncritically almost as a religion, which can lead them into extremist actions based on judgements they dont even understand or see as such.

If you want to moralize about technique fine, that is something you can do for yourself and with those who share that tendency, but dont confuse that with the need to understand how technical development radically changes how human groups organize socially and relate to their immediate environments.

If you read this guy try to keep in mind a distinction he himself made of his works, dividing them into sociological and theological ones.

To give some perspective, you could compare his work on Technological Society with Polanyi's The Great Transformation, not so much in the arguments but in the questions and distinctions they make.

Just try to be critical about what you read and dont think that just because an idea is printed or widely recognized it is a statement of fact.

no that's atheist's mental gymnastic. technique is the historical word. Technology, especially in french is just the usual anglicized word pushed by merchants and their bureaucrats and their academics.

that's pretty shallow. The whole bourgeois revolutions were based on modernizing techniques. And nowadays, since science stagnates a lot, technology is stale too and now the bureaucrats can't flood the plebeans with cheap goods deeply enhancing their lives so they start wondering if democracy is not in danger lol
