which side reigns supreme?

There is nothing supreme about not loving your own people.

>Moorcock vs Tolkien
Tolkien. Elric was great, I love it, but the ending was kind of a big "fuck you" to the audience.

>Bakker vs Howard
Howard. Bakker is good at tracking the hopeless arc of the human destiny, but Howard does it just as well, while never coming off as maudlin or depressing. Rather, Howard captures the Aryan spirit of total disdain for fate, instead of the self-annihilatory despair of Bakker.

>Rothfuss vs Goodkind
Goodkind. I draw this comparison only because it would anger Patrick Rothfuss, whom I despise and who should not be on this list. Unlike Patrick Rothfuss, Terry Goodkind actually finished his series. Unlike Patrick Rothfuss, Terry Goodkind wrote multiple books of rambling overly verbose banal philosophizing on purpose, because he was emulating Ayn Rand. And unlike Patrick Rothfuss, Terry Goodkind never promised to read the opening of his next book after reaching a fundraising goal, and then refused to do it.
Like Patrick Rothfuss, Terry Goodkind was not a particularly good writer.

>China Mieville vs HP Lovecraft
Lovecraft. This is because HP Lovecraft's work was actually imaginative and impactful instead of stumbling dreck. I prefer William Hope Hodgeson over Lovecraft in terms of "cosmic horror," but I would take either over Mieville, because I can read either without wanting to kill myself. Lovecraft's prose is unbearably florid and overwrought but it is still better than Mievilles.

>Le Guinn vs Robert Jordan
Le Guinn. Throwing a slowball here so that the Left can have something, the best thing that can be said of Robert Jordan is that he was very prolific. Unfortunately he made the mistake of killing and eating his editor and so published three books for every one he should have. Le Guinn's Earthsea was an agonizing bore but it wasn't twelve books long, so I give it to her. Also, Those Who Walked Away from Omelas was a tight, fascinating short. Jordan never wrote one short thing in his life.

Why is Cormac McCarthy not on here? I don't recognize some of these people.

It's not the sides that reign supreme, its the authors themselves, the rule is for one person not for teams

I'm not really in the habit of memorizing faces I've seen on the dust jackets of novels. It took me a second to recognize Young Tolkien up there ffs.
