My favorite epic fantasy from Canada is the Prince of Nothing series, the author said his two main influences were the Lord of the Rings and Dune - and it shows, the combination produces a better series than both of these rookie starter books, its grim dark and packed with philosophical complex ideas.

What would you expect, of a people whose warriors were once literally single-handedly beaten by a 14 year's old French-Canadian girl?
> Meanwhile Prey stokes anti-French sentiment and paints the fucking Comanches, of all people, as the good guys, and Anglos lap it up.

Been reading a lot of Franz Boas lately, extremely underrated thinker bad writer. His description of potlatch ceremonies really underlines how mercantile communities of the Pacific Northwest were, a boys initiation into manhood was basically being loaned a lot of money at 100% interest, which he had to pay back through a series of ritualized investments that would garner further interest towards him. So basically a complicated system of investments, obligatory high interest loans, and a rigid caste structure created this hyper competitive environment of economic exchange.

Claude Levi Strauss is another fascinating BC author, but on the whole, inferior to Boas.

I don't think I've read a comment more devoid of sense and reason on this site this year.

Why are you baiting by calling dune and especially LOTR rookie starter books? Prince of nothing is good as far as fantasy goes but you're a nitwit

I bought Cohen’s The flame and I regretted it because the poems were really mediocre. Loved Ondaatje’s poetry though, and Alice Munro is amazing. I’m also very excited to read Anne Carson. I will also give Atwood’s first novel a chance.

Also, while I was in Toronto I was reading one of Munro’s short story collections. I was reading one of the stories while on the train towards the city and the character in the story was also taking the same train. Peak comfiness.

The Flame is posthumously scraped from Cohen's already-plundered fonds. Early Cohen is superior: The Spice-Box of Earth, Energy of Slaves, Death of a Lady's Man, etc.

What do you think of his novels? I was originally planning to get one of them, but I could only find The Flame in second hand bookstores and Indigo, which is somehow worse than Barnes and noble , which is why I ended up buying it.
