Prince of Nothing Trilogy, by R. Scott Bakker. Pretty dense, heavy stuff: an intense blend of historic, philosophical, Tolkienian, and Herbert-esque qualities. I'd say it's probably the best contemporaneous fantasy trilogies out there: but if you really get into it most other fantasies will feel like shit, so proceed with caution.

Typically my book reading is around politics/current affairs - but I really enjoyed reading the first 4 dune books (with the last one perhaps being the biggest slog). Any recommendations for stories (mostly erotica) where the protagonist/major PoV has sex with non-humanoid beings? Something like 'Paths of the Chosen' (centaurs and harpies) or 'Blue core' (Dungeon who uses tentacles).
By non-humanoid I don't mean women with minor bonuses, like cat ears and tail on otherwise normal woman, that's too generic. I.e. succubus who's just a woman with red skin, horns and tail is not enough.
Harpies with talons and wings instead of arms might be enough, but I look for beings like satyrs, centaurs etc.

I just saw the newest Dune movie recently. I purposefully chose to watch it before reading the book instead of the other way around.

The thing is, I was planning to read the entire series eventually, but the movie was utter garbage, outside of the visual elements.

I will obviously not judge a book by its „film“, but how much better are the books actually like? I can‘t even imagine that a series that popular would be as shit as the movie.

The only character that was probably well portrayed was Paul‘s mother.

Is the story an exercise in some kind of biblical style? >>20882997 was right in saying it read like parody, especially in that paragraph about all the kingdoms fighting amongst themselves. Ancient authors wrote like that, but they have the advantage of people being actually interested in what they had to say because they actually existed.
If a reader is reading the Iliad, they are doing so because they live in a world created by it. Readers interested in the Silmarillion were only interested in it because the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, more conventional stories, referenced it and relied on it.

>Really? Here's more and maybe my tone comes off better
Your tone is fine. I think the strongest part is the beginning before the King of Sorrow. The tone is much stronger there, that's my favorite part.
I say it comes off like parody only because of the King of Sorrow section, how it repeats the "fought each other" seemingly interminably past when the point has been made. It becomes humorous. I think it could be truncated, that whole King of Sorrow section could be more concise, it drags somewhat and I find it hard to see where you're going.
In the second image you shared the tone does clash a little in the dialogue. "We will slay you if you do not leave is alone" sounds too conversational. The tone outside of the dialogue reminds me of that Mesopotamian inscription that sometimes gets posted as a meme, I think the monarch is Ashurbanipal, and he goes on in a sort of chant where he talks about treading on his enemies and slaying the children and enslaving the women and burning the crops and whatnot. Here I'll post it.
I would read that and use it for inspiration for the dialogue there. Get a sense of that archaic way of speaking and thinking for these Kings.

>No sex, no child murder, no rape obviously.
I'd say The Wandering Inn, the very age the story takes place in is called 'Waning world,' time when the mythical beings are almost all dead and have turned into legends and myths, great works of magic are lost or forgotten, wonders of ages past lie dead and destroyed, no one remembers the great events of the past times, and above all Gods are dead...
'Nothing lasts' is a big theme of the story, the entire world is ancient beyond comprehension, with some ancient characters dating at least 40 thousand years into the past.

I'm only unsure what do you mean by 'No sex, no child murder, no rape obviously.' There story is 99.9% free of sex, but there are some tragic events in which people die, and rape is mentioned occasionaly. Not in a graphic way, though.

I really wasn't expecting the drakes at all, I had completely forgotten the chapter earlier in the volume at Manus with the decision to counterattack. Not sure how I feel about it yet though, I guess it'll make for some interesting developments on the human side, maybe some alliances being forced out of it?
Also, we finally got a proper Terandria introduction. Knight orders, queens and princes, half-elves and dwarves, Pisces and Lyonette backstories implications? Yeah, I'm thinking it's gonna be pure kino
Genuinely shed a couple tears at that scene T.T
And then finding out in the next chapter that Belavierr did it by basically threatening to kill Nanette? All for her love for Wiskeria and her craft, what a character

I've heard mixed opinions on it. Personally I thought it was 'good' but not too much by the series' standards. Pacing was a little fucked and a lot of stuff that should've been shown off was just off-screened or skipped over. Did get to see some pairings we don't usually get to see (Ziel and Orthos were a fun duo), though it didn't feel like we saw MUCH of that.

The Bakker posters are kind of sad. Because even if you could argue that Bakker posting was funny when it began, it's now been long enough that it's become worn out and unfunny.

And of course they can't get everyone else to laugh, so they have to salvage their poor jokes by deluding themselves that they're happy with the outrage they generate.

And then when you acknowledge how not even their trolling is funny, they can only cope by hiding being layers of irony. Unfortunately, once you get to the ironic meme phase, there's no real escaping. Because they can always hide behind another layer. Layer after layer, for infinity. Whatever serves to justify their weird autistic quirk that causes them to post Bakker stuff day in and day out.

There are some good ones, or at least ones that could be called 'decent.'

For start, I'd recommend reading 'Fostering Faust', a story of a cold and ruthless CEO who's soul had been snatched by an Evil Goddes after his death and thrown into a body of a noble on a medieval world. He's bound to make binding deals with people on Goddess' name to fill his monthly quota, otherwise he's soul will be sent to hell. A bit edgy, but quite a good read, though the first book is the best.

From books set in modern times, definitely try Good Intentions, it's a story of a young man who stumbles upon a strangle ritual in the middle of the night, performed in a graveyard's chapel. He saves two strange women from the cultists, but by accident takes part in the ritual, binding the women to him. After, it turns out one is an angel and the other a succubus. While the premise might sound basic, it's the best erotica/harem book I've read in my life, the characterization of the women is downright incredible and the succubus might the best succubus-type creature I've seen in fiction. The book has its weaker points, especially some side characters, but otherwise it's amazing. And the sex scenes are hot as fuck.

Other than that you can also try:
- Saving Supervillains
- Inferna (Prism Academy)
- Blue Core
- Fimbulwinter
- Incubus Inc.
- Wild Wastes

The book is about an impending alien invasion and their human collaborators.

The aliens are an obvious metaphor for the Chinese people. They have a turbulent and tragic history that led to them becoming a stoic and psychopathic species with the only goal of escaping the cycle of destruction and misery that has defined them for all their known history. For the Chinese - it's their frequent and unpredictable invasions, revolutions, and dynastic changes. For the aliens - its the fact that their home planet has three stars, making it impossible to mathematically predict when their civilizations will be upended due to stellar cycles.

In the book, there is one single alien defector warning the humans not to give away the location of Earth because he's well aware of how warlike and jaded his own species has become. His plea is, in short: "Look, I know you think humans are bad and that you need an alien savior, but the universe fucking sucks, and there are species infinitely more horrible than yours, including my own. So stay quiet." The entire book trilogy itself is a metaphor for game theory and humanity (and other races) will annihilate itself if it keeps playing by psychopathic zero sum logic.

Niggers tongue my anus.

That's interesting. This might be a fun subgenre to dig into and see what I can learn. There are certain tropes that are ubiquitous now, and it would be fun to find out who did it first. Like, you've got trapped in a D&D-esque game, trapped in a computer, and scenario looping as these individual pieces that all probably got developed separately, and then someone was the first to put them all together. VVV's second VR book, Heir Apparent, is the earliest I've seen for that, but she didn't publish it until 2002.
I feel like I've done as much digging on Tower Climbing and Flintlock Fantasy as I care to, so I'll make this my next project

There's not a lot of strong contenders, honestly. For published Western fiction, you've got Senlin Ascends. Japan has done a few, most notably Sword Art Online, but I don't think it's all that great despite arguably being the progenitor of the genre as it stands. Tower of Druaga also deserves mention for historical purposes, but isn't that amazing. Korea has a fair number of entries, especially among web novels, but they are almost all terrible. SSS-Class Suicide Hunter is the only one I consider to be genuinely good.
There are some other partial mentions. The first book of The Menocht Loop is nominally about climbing levels. The World After the Fall begins as a tower climber, before breaking out into metanarrative stuff. The Novel's Extra and The Beginning After the End both contain entertaining but contained arcs of Tower Climbing.

Finished the second book already. It was alright. The book didn't explore the magic any more than the first book. With no new information, and the author not even bothering to reiterate old information, it feels like magic was even less important to the plot this time. I have to say, it's not feeling so fantastical this time around. But the plot was still intriguing, so I enjoyed it.

I really hoped the cuckold stuff would be over with. But I've already begun the third book. And in the first chapter, there's a vague statement that suggests Otah got cucked again by his own guard captain. I'm very confused, because the way it was described was that Otah and the captain got in a fight? Maybe??? And Otah either spared the man, or the captain spared Otah. But like, the decision to spare was his wife's doing? Again, it was really too vague to attempt to solve it now. It will probably come up again later in the book. But I'm starting to get uncomfortable with all this cuck shit.

The author effectively destroyed his reputation within the progression fantasy genre by copyrighting the term "System Apocalypse" when he wasn't the first nor even within the ten most popular titles within the subgenre. My sincerest hope is that, if we meme him long enough, some random studio will make a deal with him for a show series depicting his universe. Not that I care about the TV show, desu. It‘s going to be shit anyway, like every other adaptation we‘ve seen so far. I only want him to get rich so that he can go back to writing and finish the last part of the book series.

>Abnett's Ghost and Eisenhorn series
These are honestly some of the weakest books in the whole 40k universe. I can't fathom why people keep fellating Abnett, when he's mediocre at best and reddit-tier trash at worst. He's a guy who writes stuff like soldiers derailing a maglev train by placing jackets on the tracks in Gaunt's Ghosts. Or how a black man is oozing sex in Ravenor. His Horus Heresy books are alright, though.

The actually good 40k authors are Christ Wraight, Aaron Dembski Bowden and Guy Haley. But even they've been starting to get insufferable in the last few years with 40k having started to push The Message.

From what I remember, they place armoured metal jackets on the track to temporarily stop the train so they can get on. They don't derail it. I don't know anything about magnets or maglev theory to say what's wrong with that. I thought the Ghost books were a perfect entry for someone interesting in IG and 40k in general and I didn't see anything wrong with the writing.

He woke up one day by the passage of a train. His father had been a gambling fan. His mother a psychologist by profession. Together they had created an underground world to protect their family from the electric dragons that came out at dawn to punish humanity.
There was no place for normal professions. He had dedicated himself to the recycling of electricity cables. Leftovers from the feasts of said creatures. A job more competitive than lucrative. However, he did not know how to do anything else. He was a businessman by nature.
When he left the cave inherited by his parents when they died, he saw his sister watering the flowers that she had planted six years ago, if they did not die, they never really germinated. It was therefore a therapeutic act. The flowers were neither alive nor dead but in a limbic state, waiting for their true owner.
With no more property than his work tools, he greeted his relative without receiving a response. He did not expect it but he fulfilled his duty to maintain appearances, even if it was only for himself.
The apocalypse had not come as planned. No one expected angels to be 20 meters tall and have scales. Little was known about the military heads that had rolled after the first holy world war.
He was not a believer. He was not interested in feathers or scales. He was interested in surviving and the only way to do it without risking his skin every day was to steal a dragon egg, or rather an angel egg. The mangers were not only difficult to find but also dangerous to wander around. Mating rituals involved thunderstorms that could last several days or even weeks depending on the seriousness of the courtship.
A dragon egg had enough energy to run a small power plant and enough to power a small city. An engineer in tokyo had found a way to make it work, with no respect for nature or god. After all. Wouldn't it have been more sensible not to tempt the creator of said radioactive creatures?

I suppose it depends what you read the 40k novels for. Abnett has very sophisticated allusions in his novels, like Maze Undue / Maison Dieu (reference to the French Marseilles historical tarot, the Lightning tower card). I remember his alpha legion novel refers to uxors (in Plautine Greek comedy / drama matron women). The Gaunts Ghosts novels had middle English / anglo saxon in them (the marsh man they recovered, who fights with the crossbow). And in other novels, I remember Abnett using historical titles like Serdar (I think this was a Ottoman Empire military title adapted from Persian, in Dune maybe the etymology of Sardaukar might be similar to this) I mentioned before Abnett evoked names from ancient legends like Arianrhod in Eisenhorn (she comes from the Mabinogion, Welsh legend). When Dan Abnett writes a 40k novel it is filled with these evocative fragments and myths from our real world. His vocabulary and nomenclature that he deploys throughout is incredible - I actually learnt huge amounts of words and fantasy ideas and concepts from his novels, they often parallel history (eg the scene in Eisenhorn when he describes the mansard roofs of the planet cities etc) I think Abnett was involved in creating a lot of the original 40k lore outright, like the descriptions of lasgun hotshot charges, vox, promethium etc, a lot of the inquisition faction lore Monodominant, Amalathian, Xanthite, Recongregation etc. Given that Eisenhorn was written alongside the now forgotten Inquisitor miniatures rpg game. I commend Abnett, but also remember he named the God Emperor after Keanu Reeves in the matrix. That was a disappointing lore revelation.

Wasn't that scene explained because of the Vitrian soldiers wearing some sort of nonconductive glass armour? That is a recurring theme in Gaunt novels, the Vitrian soldiers with their silly mirror glass armour. I was not too enamoured of it though it wasn't as ridiculous as it sounds. I do not remember that scene being too out of place. The bit in Gaunt's Ghosts which usually does provoke some indignation, challenging suspension of disbelief is how he has to manage the high body count / death massacre toll by constantly inserting random Tanith soldiers into the regiment only for them to die a bit later. I think there was one novel which was clearly an allegory of trench warfare ww1 Somme etc. Yet none of the main characters really die or something, they are all protected by narrative need, yet Abnett is trying simultaneously to depict a nonstop killing field of trench warfare... that one confused me. Arguably also the novel where Gaunt returns after being embedded in the heresy planet for years and years... in reality they would all have been executed by the Inquisition upon return, in real life it happened to a lot of Polish resistance if I recall. Gaunt's Ghosts is actually surprisingly less grimdark despite the apparent slaughter death war of its subject matter (there are even couples and children!) Whereas in Eisenhorn (core trilogy not sequels), his retinue is killed or turned against him etc.

Some other random 40k lore I learnt:
- Callidus comes from latin Servus Callidus, or clever/trickster slave archetype in Plautine comedy the romans based on greek drama
- Eversor is latin for subverter, destroyer
- Culexus I am not as sure about, but maybe adapted from culex, a flea or gnat?

I sorted out some of my bookshelf today. Took all the fantasy books I was no longer interested in reading or rereading and shoved them in a box. If I don't read those in several years, they are going to a used book store. It really annoys me how many books I've stacked up over the years intending to read. If you had to read just one, I recommend Eisenhorn: Xenos, Malleus, Hereticus. Stop after that, it is fine. The Ravenor and Bequin series do extend it but for me Eisenhorn is a masterpiece. If you want to read something shorter to get a feel of Abnett's writing, I recommend his short story Blood Games (about Adeptus Custodes). This story has amazing depth, it references a lot of literature and myths. I reckon a lot of anons just read Abnett and think, oh it is a grimdark 40k story. But if you search a few of the names or even have just read any other literature you will know that his locations, philosophies and phenomena he describes have been done so with deliberation. A lot of fantasy is ahistorical. It is like WoW with names like Grimaxe Wolfheart, that is fine but there is only so much you can imaginatively attempt within those fictional constraints. If you want to write true imaginative fantasy you need to draw on the rich depth of myth and literature extant in our real history to invoke awe-inspiring world depth

I've read the first two Eisenhorn books and loved them. I think Abnett's strength is that he writes really fun and engaging action scenes, which is a rare talent, but he keeps the drama and tension and thriller aspects dense enough to give meaning to the well penned action.

His characters, general plots, and almost autistic love for world-building exposition dumps are all slightly mediocre... but if I'm craving a galaxy trodding, violent mystery adventure, there are few as pulpy and satisfying as Abnett's W40K books.

>hate on God at least once during internal monologs, but specifically the Christian God
>"the year is 2121, we've long moved past the fight over personal liberties and came together to go beyond the stars"
>"this species has evolved beyond roles assigned according to gender" which biologically doesn't make any sense
>"guns are not allowed on such a civilized world"
Other than these gay little things sprinkled in, I've been enjoying them

https://www.goodreads.com/series/190347-immortality-and-chaos involves an ancient evil awakening and the subsequent wave of change from the epicenter, breakdown of society, vacating civilians/volunteering to stay and fruitlessly fight, etc. but it takes at least 3 books IIRC to get there, the last book has the meat of what you want.

I assume he's gotten better, but that first Eisenhorn book was really bad and I don't know why people keep recommending it as a good first entry into WK40K. Because it's simple or something? Anyway, it really fucking sucked, so bad it made me not want to waste any more of my time on 40K, because if that was some of the "best" that was on offer, they really are nothing but garbage.

But I've recently decided to give it another try, because the universe does seem pretty cool, and at least so far the first Night Lords book is better than that garbage Eisenhorn book. Nothing great of course, but definitely nowhere near as dull and poorly written.

I would advise against it, especially since you're new to reading. Read other, lighter, stuff first. A lot of people here suffer from PBS(Post Bakker Syndrome). Meaning that once you've read him, it will be hard to find other authors in fantasy as good as he is.

Having that said, he is quite literally the most beloved writer in this general, and has been for over a decade, regardless of what newfags tell you. And he is, in my humble opinion, the greatest living writer in fantasy right now.

If you enjoy dark fantasy series with intense battles, pitch black lore, highly intellectual themes that dovetail into real world philosophy, poignant character psychology, and just a hint of Lovecraftian horror, then this is the series for you.

I've listened to the entire series. Simon Vance is always great, but Temeraire as a whole gets a little old over time and it winds up being more or less interesting based on where they are in a given book. just read him, or listen to an audiobook. Since it's very easy to read/listen to, doesn't matter if it's stormlight, mistborn, elantris or skyward or whatever else. All characters also have fan art which makes it even more easier to follow since it's easier to visualise.
It's obviously much better than a marvel movie but Sanderson writes for the sake of entertaining and escapism.
He's noted to state "I feel the same way every single day" which is a bit strange in my opinion but it gives you a look into his books, he also teaches a creative writing class you can watch online with all its lectures where he follows and teaches a super formulaic way of writing fantasy giving you another look.
What bothers me most about his books is that he obviously has a pretty neurotypical brain but tries to write very neurodivergent characters, it often just doesn't work too well.
But I still find him alright, Kaladin is fun and Shallan is cute. I don't understand what people like about Szeth so much.

Don't read him, but if you do it matters, only read mistborn era 2. None of his characters have fan art so it's harder to visualise.
Marvel movies like Eternals or iron man 3 is better than stormlight, but Sanderson writes for deep thoughts and realism.
He's noted to say "every day is different and my personality constantly changes" which is normal which doesn't give you a look into his books, he also doesn't teach a creative writing class.
What I love is that he's neurodivergent but writes neurotypical characters which works really well!
But I still find him stale, Kaladin is cute and Shallan is fun. And Szeth has the best chapters.
