i liked the part where they were in Rome together with all these pretentious people and the poet. contrary to popular opinion, i don't think this book is ver bad, it's just not good either.

I could not figure out what the hell I was supposed to get out of that whole bit. Or the interminable story about the Thai/Vietnamese(?) person who was a woman who looked like a man who looked like a woman who looked like a (etc.)

I don't hate the book. I think I was mostly disappointed that what at first seemed like a true-to-life depiction of romantic infatuation soon turned into a fantasy of unlimited romantic togetherness.

the atmosphere, the chap reciting Dante's Divine Comedy (and Neapolitan or whaterver drunk songs), the part where Elio vomits next to a monument was pretty funny, then they meet touristand sing with them. The night that I would like to spend in Italy (minus the gay part). Oh, and I enjoyed the recital in tiny bookshop.

i agree. in fact we know NOTHING about the characters really, it's all so unspecified. 300pgs, Aciman could really give them some personality, would be nice for Ellio to notice Oliver's distinguishing birthmarks or anything like that, but we receive nothing, also main character seems like a Mary Sue to me.

Im not straight. Straight women would read this, maybe a few straight men would too but it really wasn't written with them in mind. If they read it, it would be to look at the romance and understand the gay relationship issues. But they wouldn't enjoy the gay sex a lot.
