I am looking for recommendations for the best Western novels. I am currently reading Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy and I want to read more in the genre. Does anyone have recommendations?

Are you looking for more dark and edgy neo western deconstructions like Blood Meridian or just anything western?

Both, I guess. I'm loving the dark vibe of Blood Meridian, but I am also looking to read the major works of the genre.

The holy trinity is BM, Butchers Crossing, and Warlock

I'm surprised Warlock isn't on there by Oakley Hall. Regardless, it's another good western.

it's interesting. I tried to get through Butchers Crossing but it started to really bore me half way through and I had to drop it

Warlock is great

People here don’t read. So it’s not a surprise.

I thought butchers crossing was going to do that to me but I ended up loving it. Was very surprised

True Grit is very good. Centennial is a brick but also an incredible epic. Butcher's Crossing felt underwhelming - not bad, just very small in scope and predictable. Lonesome Dove is comfy western, but the prequel and sequel are Cormac McCarthy lite, and people hate it.

I'd add Elmore Leonard's western stories to this. Most are short stories or novellas, but they're also good and many were turned into movies (like much of this list).
