In a minute?? Laughable, I identify wood within the margin of 2 second, without any tools, and yes, that includes the magnifying glass

How can you tell any book is trustworthy. This thought worries me to no end, trying to find a book that's actually saying the truth requires you to make your own book, but that defeats the point of reading said books in the first place, which is having something that already knows the proper info for you.

If you are in North America get a field guide for your region and a copy of Mushrooms Demystified.

>> No.20810878

I was talking in general and not about mushrooms, but maybe I will

I meant too tag OP, not sure what happened.
>>20810127
>>20810256 Was for you. But most general purpose mushroom guides error on the side of caution and regularly list perfectly edible mushrooms as inedible for various reasons. Mushrooms Demystified gives a very good rundown on figuring out what a mushroom is and how to go about confirming your identification and even how to test it safely, most field guides give this information as well but rely more on nice color photos and simple visual ID of fairly easy to ID mushrooms. Mushrooms Demystified goes all out for Mushroom ID and relies more on details and teaching you to spot those details so you can identify them as well as listing all the look alikes, habitat, growing characteristics, etc, and even goes into microscopic identification based on spores for those tricky to ID mushrooms. It will teach you all you know but a regular field guide for your area is better for hauling about the woods and cursory ID, Mushrooms Demystified is 1000 pages with thousands of mushrooms so not very good for in the field identification.

Google the person who writes the book, find out if they're a well known charlatan, or a respected academic.
It could also depend on what information you need to trust, if naming is important then go for recent stuff or you'll spend half the day on google looking up one name and getting the updated version... the history of the taxonomy is a mess

from what I understand, Paul Stamets is a trustworthy name in mycology. You should just consult a couple sources before eating any mushrooms
