Inconsistent. I enjoyed "The Corrections," but "Freedom" was meh to me. Some good parts, but overall just kind of lackluster. I never finished "Crossroads" because, sadly, it just got boring. I was enjoying the first 100 or so pages, but the second the narrative switched to the boring as fuck wife I lost interest.

Both came from a thrift store, the Forster collection I think was too expensive, like $20 ( they're not really quality books) and the Mommsen was $12. I hit gold with that buy.

The odd editions are additions that come when I see a good opportunity for a book I liked or want to read. The 1813 version of the Anatomy volume I was like 20 bucks and the folio box set was $35.

they sold these boxes which usually had one or two books you wanted (mostly poetry in my case) and then about 12 books of out of date 19 century theology, all beautifully bound in expensive leather, but useless none the less.

I am sharing only one bookcase. I have a few newer books I haven't added yet. Top row is religious material, second row is stuff on wildlife, third row is largely weird fiction & horror, and fourth row is just miscellaneous.

My other two bookcases are full of art books, wildlife photography, nature books that were unable to fit, children's chapter books, picture books, computer science manuals, and so on. I will share those other two bookcases if anyone else is interested. However, they are much messier than this one.

>Which 3rd world shithole do you live in? Europe? If you're American or Canadian where there is plenty of lumber, I think a basic ass shelf shouldn't be that expensive.
Have you ever priced lumber?
Unless you’re buying lumber in bulk, something which comes with its own issues,
Lumber is expensive enough that just the lumber to built Ikea type furniture costs more than Ikea furniture.
Buying the materials to make a shitty chipboard bookcase would cost more than a shitty chipboard bookcase, let alone the hardware and work involved.
The exception are bookcases made with higher quality materials like solid hardwood lumber.
These can be made at least for the same price as commercially purchased units, or maybe less, depending on what you’re looking for.
Making bookcases really only makes sense if you want something custom, or need something made to an unusual size to maximize space. Or maybe if you just steal limber from a construction site like some people I used to know.
Pallets are also sometimes cheap or free, but it takes work to break those down and smooth them out, and the pallet wood will never look like a high quality bookshelf.

That's cool. If you like Amano, I'd recommend Kay Nielsen over him. I'm more into collecting serene art like Inga Moore, Maxfield Parrish, Alfred Bestall, Monet, Fritz Baumgarten, Japanese woodblock paintings, etc. Alfred Kubin and Tanaka Suguru have nice dark weird art, which you would probably like.

I'd probably file them more under "whimsical", I think. Those are artists I do like looking at but it's not art that really inspires me. Same for Amano: His stuff is fun but I mainly have that box for FF nostalgia. And because it only cost me 30 bucks.
Kay Nielsen might be something I could enjoy. Thanks for the tip!
Kubin and Suguru are already on my shelves. The latter was surprisingly expensive and the quality of the book itself is a bit subpar, unfortunately. The worst thing is that the art goes to the middle spine and you also can't keep the book open on the table without putting something as heavy as a brick on it which would destroy the book as well if you did it.

It's serene/blissful and not whimsical. I feel the same way about dark, macabre art the way you do about serene. Dark and macabre don't personally inspire me the way pic-related does.

I watch films like The House that Jack Built, Virgin Spring, Cure (1997), etc. and read works like Les Chants de Maldoror, Ligotti, etc. in order to become strong. I don't truly enjoy any of them. I'd much rather relax with Beatrix Potter than watch The House that Jack Built again.

That's a very unusual goal with those films and books. Strong in which way?
Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter I own I've read it. It was very cutesy but definitely not close to what I enjoy.
>I feel the same way about dark, macabre art the way you do about serene
That's hard to tell without going deeper into the hows and whys. I think what I mostly get inspired by can be grouped under "interesting" - unusual stuff that you rarely get to see in every day life. "Relaxing" would be the antipode of what excites me.
I also took jobs in a hospital when I was an adolescent. I saw surgeries and accidents. In my town there were numerous abandoned places which I regularly explored and only much later photographed when I was old enough to be trusted with a camera. Diseases and ruins are usually associated with the dark and macabre which is why it's one place I get drawn to. But I also enjoy magic realism like Shaun Tan and the visionnaires Gerard Trignac, Mohlitz, and Poumeyrol.

>That's hard to tell without going deeper into the hows and whys. I think what I mostly get inspired by can be grouped under "interesting" - unusual stuff that you rarely get to see in every day life.
What inspires me is to convey the ordinary joys of life in a way that hints at Infinity. I also like some magical realist elements. For this reason, I am drawn more into works either influenced by or from the Golden Age of Illustrations. Like you, I have a large section of my library devoted to artwork except of a different character. Pic-related is by Susan Wheeler.
>Strong in which way?
Obviously the light/serene, what I call spenta, and dark/macabre, what I call angra, are mutually contained and "interpenetrate". As Huineng says, "Darkness is not darkness by itself; because there is light there is darkness. That darkness is not darkness by itself is because light changes, becoming darkness, and with darkness light is revealed. They originate from each other. The thirty-six confrontations are also like this."
In order to appreciate and cherish the light more, it is necessary for me to delve into dark artwork. Granted, as much as I push myself through them, I do not enjoy any of it. I even published a transgressive short story in a reputable journal, but I don't personally like it. I have also given up with publishing my picture book because agents simply want pozzed globohomo shit. I've dropped all of my artistic aspirations. I'm not interested in only publishing transgressive stories when I can't publish wholesome ones.

The books are nearly all fiction so usually I arrange them autistically chronologically by original publication date, which demands a great deal of fussing around and looking up each and every book in a given shelf every time I want to add to it.
I was thinking of sorting by country or author, but this seems too boring. Any ideas?

I hope this doesn't expose my ignorance but isn't Balzac quite a standard novelist? As far as I understand him he's like a Dickens or Henry James of French novels so I'd be surprised what kind of notes people would require beyond maybe explaining a referenced historical event

The old version (the one the guy who posted pictures has, and the one I have) has the translations in the back of the book and also the travel journal and letters (which are dubious imo). Personally I say find a late printing of that one.

Œuvres complètes, edited by Maurice Rat, is truly the complete works. If that's what you're concerned with, find a copy of that published after the 70s or 80s and you should be fine.

Having the Latin/Greek at the bottom of the page would be nice (I don't read either) but flipping to the back isn't so bad. I'm sure the 2007 "Essais" volume is full of shit modern agenda commentary anyway.
