The winner of the lottery gets stoned to death. Stupid and pointless short story. This retarded shit made her famous.

Average /lit/ poster in 2022, folks. Hill House was also the novel that made her famous

I didn't miss the point, I said pointless but obviously I realize the story is a commentary on communities stubbornly refusing to move on from traditions even if they lost sight of why they still follow them. But it's such a shallow contrivance that to me it's pointless. I'm literally too smart to find it meaningful.
I mean how heavy-handed can you be? You don't actually think this is some deep shit do you?

>deep shit
It doesn't need to be. It's a very short story. It's well written and provides a decent amount of commentary in a short space, which is why it's a good introduction to short stories in school. Not everything needs to be super profound to have an impact on the reader

>It's well written
She's a professional writer, why wouldn't it be?
>provides a decent amount of commentary
The commentary this story provides is, like I said, heavy-handed, but that's understating it. It's like using an atom bomb to drive a nail. Utterly fatuous.
>good introduction to short stories in school
Yeah no shit only children could feel any sort of impact from this bargain basement trash. I can hardly believe people wrote angry letters demanding it be explained to them. God people are stupid.
If you think this is good then you're an extraordinary midwit.

Patient zero of "folk horror" that Stephen King, Peter Straub etc are still ripping off endlessly to this day

What do you want from reading anon? It's a very simple short story you yourself describe as well-written. You think it's too reliant on an explicit moral, and it's driving it home too much? Maybe you shouldn't read didactic little short stories. Did you also not like Animal Farm because the comparison to the Soviet Union was too obvious? Maybe you don't like film because its too visual? Fantasy because it insists too much on a world that doesn't exist?
