Such a breath of fresh air after only reading Webnovels and newer books for the last few years. I've almost forgot how a classical fantasy tale looks like. I enjoyed this strangely naturalistic tale of a young Dragon, who eats little humans, reads up ancient philosophy and thinks about finding a Dragon wife and making hatchling with her, while at the same time worrying to Dragonelle would want him due to his lack of scales. A classical young-male story, but from a Dragon's eyes. It's not amazing, dialogues have that poetic flair of old fantasy, but aside of that do not punch above their weigh. Info-dumps on the world-bulding could also be presented better, but I appreciate what the author attempted there.

7/10, would read about a Dragon eating human children again.

PS: The story says that the common myth of Dragons kidnapping young women has its origins in young male Dragons going mad with lack of Dragon pussy, lmao

Pretty good volume so far, nice change of pace after all the war arc, but I feel we're falling again into the loop of introducing a set of characters over a whole chapter only to not hear from them again for dozens of chapters.
Ryoka, Toren, Laken, goblins, Horns and other adventurers. I want to hear more about them and their interactions, but looking at tbe chapter list it looks like I've a big Baleros chunk ahead of me yet again.
At least it seems Ryoka's gonna be a big focus on this volume, really looking forward to her new look on life and her not-lesbian adventures with her vampire friend.
Sure hope all this Toren silence over the last two volumes pay out soon because I'm kinda losing interest on whatever they're up to.

If you read all of book of the fallen, then I'd start with esselmounts books with the path to ascendancy series.

Doing great, V9 has started recently and it's going amazing, basically 'back to the formula.' I haven't been so hyped for new chapters for months.

As for your V6 reading, it's a volume that has a few 'arcs', which last 4+ chapters each.
But the arcs in V6 are great, the one you are coming close to is the first 'big event' in the story.
Yes, the characters you mentioned will be getting their own arcs this volume. That's one of the reasons why this volume's so good. What you've had so far was just a prelude to the real meat of this part of the story.

When people have this sort of problem with Gormengoober it's generally because they're going about it the wrong way. Don't expect it to be like any fantasy you've ever read before, and don't expect much excitement as such. The most exciting thing would be Steerpike's grindset, as someone mentioned earlier, or maybe Swelter's shenanigans.
Mervyn Peake was a visual artist by trade, and a poet, and a children's book author. It's helpful to keep that in mind. Also keep in mind that it could be classed as weird fiction, gothic fiction, a comedy of manners, or nonsense literature, before classing it as fantasy. I personally think nonsense literature is the best way to think about it, as in Alice in Wonderland etc.
To actually enjoy it, read it in small bits. One chapter at a time should do the trick. Then put the book down and let your imagination play with what you've just read. Take a moment to reread a particularly descriptive passage and visualise it. Try and build the castle in your mind. Then place the characters in it, and have a conversation with them. After a while, read another chapter.
This may all sound very dumb but if you figure out how to read these books there's nothing more rewarding. It is so intensely imaginative. The stuff of daydreams. Good luck anons.

This is probably present in most of his other works and I just don't know enough about the historical counterpart to notice, but Lions of Al-Rassan, despite being overall a very interesting books, irks me the wrong way due the blatant idealization that goes in the worldbuilding of the not-muslims. I am aware that this is ultimately a fantasy setting, but Kay leans too heavily in actual history to simply pass the fact that his representation of muslim Iberia reeks of your typical american ignorance, in which modern, liberal values are projected into a past that, while prosperous and glorious, couldn't be further away morally speaking. It ends up feeling cheap, even if the characters, the conflict and the prose are pretty good.
Also can't help but feel that Kay wasted his own main character, limiting her to be either a bed warmer for the actual movers of the setting or just a pair of fresh eyes for the reader to see these societies from the perspective of the outsider. That the critical moment of the brain chirurgery scene was given to her father just reinforces that.

This was some Kino arc, although it broke the readers back when it was published. Imagine Getting Riverfarm, week after week, for like two months, while waiting for the elections result. Still, basicaly every scene with Belavierr is Kino. Finally some good arc for Roka.

As for the the Drake plot, Riverfarm kinda had it coming, if you recall 6.33E and the council in Manus that started the Witch Arc. The siege of Liscor had to have consequences.

By the way, during the council in Manus...have you figured it out? The part that was very subtly implied? I don't mean anything about the plan against the North, but the scene itself, what was hidden in plain sight. If you didn't, don't worry. You will be surprised later on. I personally hadn't the first time, but it's subtle as hell.

Here's my perspective anon. The first book was the toughest to get into and nothing special, but for me the series kept on getting better and better. It peaked at Toll the Hounds which is currently my fave fantasy book of all time, but I also really enjoyed the final two books. I only read the ten books from Malazan The Book of the Fallen. It was a complete experience and I never felt like I was missing much by avoiding the other books. It's the only epic fantasy series I intend to reread. I do not intend to read other books in the series because ten doorstoppers is enough for me.

There were multiple entire threads back to back filled with discussion about all the characters, plot, setting, philosphy, religion, metaphysics, etc... for months. To the point this was actually called /bakker/ and no one talked about anything else. Then eventually people got sick of it/ran out of things to talk about and it gradually receeded to short memes, trolls, and occasional shilling, with the presumption that anyone itt would already have MORE than enough information about bakker and any attempt to present more details would be either ignored or responded to as an annoyance.
I'll give you the simple pitch:
It's a fairly well written fantasy novel set during a holy war in a psuedo-middle-east between two major groups who disagree on whether sorcery is blasphemous, the majority of the sorcerers being on the side that it is and they're all damned to hell for eternity.
Into this conflict comes Kellhus, the result of a thousand year breeding project to create the "perfect" man, which has resulted in a race of emotionally dead homicidal psychopaths who view all thought and action as the unwillingly imposed slavery of animal instinct and seek to explain and master all of reality through logic and reason. Also they're completely incorrect because magic and souls 100% exist and all of them are unknowingly damned to hell for their actions.

Lots of other stuff happens but that's the basic premise.

thats fair critizisms, the everybody coming back thing is annoying and I think the author is weirdly obsessed with everything tying back together. its not perfect and it can feel a bit YAF with the conveniences and gimmicks.
I do think however that the first book is the worst of the four in this regard (besides a really annoying deus ex machina moment in the second book) and he does redeem a lot of the issues by really flashing out the characters. at the end of the first book the Amazon is this shitty gimmick-fest and le edgy piratess is quite random too, but they gain a lot of depth as the Story moves on and the mc gets to know them more. I do remember the setting and prose hooking me in and making the reading experience peak COMF which made me want to read more. I will say the character conveniences do not get better, but the characters do. maybe the whole thing would be better as a series of independent short stories nut oh well. I think the old paper publishing model put practical limitations on story length (which were already much longer than the practical limitations on live performances) that don't exist for web publishing, enabling much longer stories. Not at all. A lot of people have opnions on what The Wandering Inn surely is, because they cannot comprehend how something can be this long and yet still readable. Honestly, before I read TWI I thought the same.

Imagine this, you have a typical Epic Fantasy story. You get the main characters, some side PoVs, and the events that happen to them. There's start, middle and finish. It might take a few books. Now, imagine the same, but that the story is much, much larger. The beginning of it and setting up the setting and the characters doesn't take a single volume, but several. The scope of the plot is small at first, then widens with each consecutive volume. It starts at a level of a local city, then you get the major cities and continents. All of it woven into gripping storytelling and emotional character arcs.

And the thing is, it's not boring, people wouldn't read it if it was. TWI isn't stretched. It's just massive. But it's hard to convince people of that, because there isn't anything like TWI to compare it to. The author had an out-line of the story and its major events from the start, they are just continously filling it in, sometimes according to the plan, sometimes with new ideas.

And it's been written for 6 years now because the author is obssesed with it. They aren't writing for money, they are writing because they must, mentally. To quote the author:

That anon was trolling. I'm not sure what 'in an instant' would even mean. It's been years in-story, at least two. But I imagine the time will speed up a little now, considering the recent plot developments. The author has multiple time stated that they have an end in sight, since the very start of the story. 'Their guiding beacon,' as they said.

Of course, how could be any different in any story? Characters and their stories are TWI's biggest strength, some came and went, some are still there. This isn't some never-ending story with random events cobbled together.

TWI has a lot of plots, kinda layered together. There's main plot that's been being set-up for multiple volumes, but it was always there, since the start, if you want to know, the story's is mainly about: Dead Gods returning back to life after being 'dead' for a very, very long time. An eon. And the characters trying to, more or less, kill them back.

It's an Epic Fantasy story, events larger than life, you know, the whole package. But the author is building-up the characters and world in which they can have that plot, step by step. There are characters that are mighty and powerful, but most of them are only starting, the story is about the people that one day are going to BE the kind of people that you can see having influence and power to take parts in the story of this calibre. Their entire journey, from their very beginning, not just back-story of characters in few paragraphs. That's what TWI is about, in essence, stories of people that one day will become Legends.
