Such a breath of fresh air after only reading Webnovels and newer books for the last few years. I've almost forgot how a classical fantasy tale looks like. I enjoyed this strangely naturalistic tale of a young Dragon, who eats little humans, reads up ancient philosophy and thinks about finding a Dragon wife and making hatchling with her, while at the same time worrying to Dragonelle would want him due to his lack of scales. A classical young-male story, but from a Dragon's eyes. It's not amazing, dialogues have that poetic flair of old fantasy, but aside of that do not punch above their weigh. Info-dumps on the world-bulding could also be presented better, but I appreciate what the author attempted there.

7/10, would read about a Dragon eating human children again.

PS: The story says that the common myth of Dragons kidnapping young women has its origins in young male Dragons going mad with lack of Dragon pussy, lmao

First book is not the worst, I don't know why so many people dislike it more than the rest.

I really recommend reading in esselmounts books in order

1.gotm
2.deadhouse gates
3.memories of ice
4.house of chains
5.Midnight tides
6.night of knives (totally skippable, but if you want to read it read before return of the crimson guard and bonehunters, it's a prequel set earlier than gotm)
6.bonehunters
7.reapers gale
8.return of the crimson guard
9.stonewielder
10.toll the hounds
11.dust of dreams
12.orb scepter throne
13.the cripples god
14.blood and bone
15.assail
16-19. The path of ascendancy books
20.fall of light
21.forge of darkness

TWI bros how we doing
6.15K, again, taking it pretty slow this volume, ADHD and slight burnout making me not read as much
Pretty good volume so far, nice change of pace after all the war arc, but I feel we're falling again into the loop of introducing a set of characters over a whole chapter only to not hear from them again for dozens of chapters.
Ryoka, Toren, Laken, goblins, Horns and other adventurers. I want to hear more about them and their interactions, but looking at tbe chapter list it looks like I've a big Baleros chunk ahead of me yet again.
At least it seems Ryoka's gonna be a big focus on this volume, really looking forward to her new look on life and her not-lesbian adventures with her vampire friend.
Sure hope all this Toren silence over the last two volumes pay out soon because I'm kinda losing interest on whatever they're up to.

Yeah I think so. Have you keep in mind they designed the world together, it's not like it's just some fan addition. Esselmounts books are not only good but also add a lot to the world that is left unexplained in Erikson's books.

If you read all of book of the fallen, then I'd start with esselmounts books with the path to ascendancy series.

>TWI bros how we doing
Doing great, V9 has started recently and it's going amazing, basically 'back to the formula.' I haven't been so hyped for new chapters for months.

As for your V6 reading, it's a volume that has a few 'arcs', which last 4+ chapters each.
But the arcs in V6 are great, the one you are coming close to is the first 'big event' in the story.
Yes, the characters you mentioned will be getting their own arcs this volume. That's one of the reasons why this volume's so good. What you've had so far was just a prelude to the real meat of this part of the story.

any novels with really good "monster" characters like Gollum? It's odd but gollum's chapter in The Hobbit (chapter five) (and parts of Gardner's Grendel) really move me unlike any other scenes in any fiction, even scenes that are supposed to make you feel feels.
>They all began shouting at each other. One of the horses neighed and reared
up, and for some crazy reason they took it for a sign. The king snatched an ax
from the man beside him and, without any warning, he hurled it at me. I twisted,
letting out a howl, and it shot past my shoulder, just barely touching my skin.
Blood trickled out.
"You're all crazy," I tried to yell, but it came out a moan. I bellowed for my
mother.
"Surround him!" the king yelled, "Save the horses!"--and suddenly I knew I
was dealing with no dull mechanical bull but with thinking creatures, pattern
makers, the most dangerous things I'd ever met. I shrieked at them, trying to
scare them off, but they merely ducked behind bushes and took long sticks from
the saddles of their horses, bows and javelins. "You're all crazy," I bellowed,
"you're all insane!" I'd never howled more loudly in my life. Darts like hot coals
went through my legs and arms and I howled more loudly still. And then, just
when I was sure I was finished, a shriek ten times as loud as mine came blaring
off the cliff. It was my mother!
>"Where is it? Where iss it?" "Losst it is, my precious, lost, lost!
Curse us and crush us, my precious is lost!" "Curse it! curse it! curse it!" hissed Gollum. "Curse the Baggins! It's gone! What has it got
in its pocketses? Oh we guess, we guess, my precious.
He's found it, yes he must have. My birthday-present."
All at once there came a
bloodcurdling shriek, filled with hatred and despair. Gollum was defeated. He dared go
no further. He had lost: lost his prey, and lost, too, the only thing he had ever cared for,
his precious.

When people have this sort of problem with Gormengoober it's generally because they're going about it the wrong way. Don't expect it to be like any fantasy you've ever read before, and don't expect much excitement as such. The most exciting thing would be Steerpike's grindset, as someone mentioned earlier, or maybe Swelter's shenanigans.
Mervyn Peake was a visual artist by trade, and a poet, and a children's book author. It's helpful to keep that in mind. Also keep in mind that it could be classed as weird fiction, gothic fiction, a comedy of manners, or nonsense literature, before classing it as fantasy. I personally think nonsense literature is the best way to think about it, as in Alice in Wonderland etc.
To actually enjoy it, read it in small bits. One chapter at a time should do the trick. Then put the book down and let your imagination play with what you've just read. Take a moment to reread a particularly descriptive passage and visualise it. Try and build the castle in your mind. Then place the characters in it, and have a conversation with them. After a while, read another chapter.
This may all sound very dumb but if you figure out how to read these books there's nothing more rewarding. It is so intensely imaginative. The stuff of daydreams. Good luck anons.

>Guy Gavriel Kay

This is probably present in most of his other works and I just don't know enough about the historical counterpart to notice, but Lions of Al-Rassan, despite being overall a very interesting books, irks me the wrong way due the blatant idealization that goes in the worldbuilding of the not-muslims. I am aware that this is ultimately a fantasy setting, but Kay leans too heavily in actual history to simply pass the fact that his representation of muslim Iberia reeks of your typical american ignorance, in which modern, liberal values are projected into a past that, while prosperous and glorious, couldn't be further away morally speaking. It ends up feeling cheap, even if the characters, the conflict and the prose are pretty good.
Also can't help but feel that Kay wasted his own main character, limiting her to be either a bed warmer for the actual movers of the setting or just a pair of fresh eyes for the reader to see these societies from the perspective of the outsider. That the critical moment of the brain chirurgery scene was given to her father just reinforces that.

This is how I know most of you barely read. The whole reason I read so much is because television shows, movies, and most websites are so low on information density that they're not worth the time. I haven't been excited about a movie in years. Television is so slow and boring I can't enjoy it sober.

This was some Kino arc, although it broke the readers back when it was published. Imagine Getting Riverfarm, week after week, for like two months, while waiting for the elections result. Still, basicaly every scene with Belavierr is Kino. Finally some good arc for Roka.

As for the the Drake plot, Riverfarm kinda had it coming, if you recall 6.33E and the council in Manus that started the Witch Arc. The siege of Liscor had to have consequences.

By the way, during the council in Manus...have you figured it out? The part that was very subtly implied? I don't mean anything about the plan against the North, but the scene itself, what was hidden in plain sight. If you didn't, don't worry. You will be surprised later on. I personally hadn't the first time, but it's subtle as hell.

It peaked at Toll the Hounds which is currently my fave fantasy book of all time, but I also really enjoyed the final two books. I only read the ten books from Malazan The Book of the Fallen. It was a complete experience and I never felt like I was missing much by avoiding the other books. It's the only epic fantasy series I intend to reread. I do not intend to read other books in the series because ten doorstoppers is enough for me.

A Kellian Gnostic Zaudunyani New Imperial Mandati sorcerer was teaching a class on Anasurimbor Kellhus, known false prophet. ”Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship Kellhus and accept that he was the most highly-evolved being the world has ever known, even greater than Inri Sejenus!”
At this moment, a brave, pro-salvation, skinspy champion who had served Golgotterath for 1500 years and understood the necessity of Mog-Pharau and fully supported all military decision made by the Holy Consult stood up.

”How does one achieve salvation, dog?”
The arrogant sorcerer smirked in a Nilnameshi way and smugly replied “by following our Lord-and-Prophet in life and death”
”Wrong. If Kellhus is the God-of-Gods, then why hasn’t he shut the World yet?”

The sorceror was visibly shaken, and dropped his quill and copy of the Rehabilitation of Sorcery. He stormed out of the room crying those Zaudunyani crocodile tears. The same tears Kellians cry for the “caste-menials” (who today live in such luxury that most own ancestor tablets) when they jealously try to claw justly earned wealth from the deserving caste-nobles. There is no doubt that at this point our sorcerer wished he hadn’t grasped the heart of Chigra and become more than a sophist Mandati blasphemer. He wished so much that he had a weapon of light to immolate him from embarrassment, but he himself had campaigned against the Tekne!

The students applauded and all joined the Consult that day and accepted Ark as their lord and savior. An Inchoroi named “Eternal Salvation” flew into the room and perched atop the Sign of the Horns and shed a tear on the soggomant. The Inverse Fire was looked into several times, and the Progenitors themselves showed up and enacted a mass culling across the kingdom.

The sorcerer lost his tenure and was thrown to the Sranc pits the next day. Death came swirling down and his soul was tossed into the Outside. Agony and wickedness chattering with famished glee… demons, come to pull his outside through his inside, to invert and expose, to bare his every tenderness to fire and gnashing teeth.

Hail the Old Fathers!

Apparently he's good at abusing umlaute and thinking of women as holes. And something about some guy named kellogs being a god like self insert. That about all i know about him from reading this thread. The rest is all empty praise as far as i'm concerned.

It's got wizards that actually seem scary, human computers capable of manipulating empires to their will, and a crashed spaceship belonging to ancient rape aliens in place of a Dark Lord. If that all sounds appealing to you, check it out. If not, move along.

>We're told they were an ecstatic philosophical cult in the Old Norsirai empires. But I personally believe they originated as a secret Nonman experiment attempting to breed a soul that could grasp the Logos. We know that the Nonmen fucked around with breeding Emwama so this doesn't seem implausible to me.
I think I’ve heard this opinion here already. It’s not a bad theory by any means. It’s just that we know so little about their backstory. Even the first contact with the bastard son is very cryptic.

You're obviously new, or just happened to be on hiatus during the bakker times.
There were multiple entire threads back to back filled with discussion about all the characters, plot, setting, philosphy, religion, metaphysics, etc... for months. To the point this was actually called /bakker/ and no one talked about anything else. Then eventually people got sick of it/ran out of things to talk about and it gradually receeded to short memes, trolls, and occasional shilling, with the presumption that anyone itt would already have MORE than enough information about bakker and any attempt to present more details would be either ignored or responded to as an annoyance.
I'll give you the simple pitch:
It's a fairly well written fantasy novel set during a holy war in a psuedo-middle-east between two major groups who disagree on whether sorcery is blasphemous, the majority of the sorcerers being on the side that it is and they're all damned to hell for eternity.
Into this conflict comes Kellhus, the result of a thousand year breeding project to create the "perfect" man, which has resulted in a race of emotionally dead homicidal psychopaths who view all thought and action as the unwillingly imposed slavery of animal instinct and seek to explain and master all of reality through logic and reason. Also they're completely incorrect because magic and souls 100% exist and all of them are unknowingly damned to hell for their actions.

Lots of other stuff happens but that's the basic premise.

i don't remember well but i felt that it set things up and then did complete 180 turn on them. the book gave a fantastic feeling of the mc lost in this weird fantastic world and getting more and more lost and learning things the hard way, with great characters who each teach him a lesso and so on. but then the kid he met outside the tower appears again out of nowhere and turns into a secondary character, then the same happens with the dwarf or whatever and the mc is fine with it, i think it also happens with some chick who is an edgy strong pirate or something, don't remember, there's also a hilarious amazonian girl who uses a chain as a weapon iirc, i think i completely lost hope on the book at that point, and i remember the ending was a retarded over the top huge retarded battle where i wanted every character to die. i wish it was a standalone book instead of a series, maybe that way the characters would have died or at least leave the story after their archs finish properly

i did like the prose, i remember liking very much the first few scenes presenting the mc and his wife and the descriptions of the outside of the tower both because of the feeling of wonder and so on, and because of the prose. maybe i will read it again and see if i can try out the second book

i will add that the one character i liked and i felt was well developed throughout is the guy he befriends in the baths, and it's mainly because he has a great arch, and luckily he dies so he doesn't have to coincidentally pop out later in the story in order to join the mc as another sidekick in his epic quest despite it making no fucking sense and killing all the spiritual value thatthe start of the story promised

also the inplausability of the whole setting got really bad too, lots of small things that piled up that eventually broke my suspension of disbelief. this also had lots to do with me hating were the story was going though, i was looking for ways to get annoyed

His last books were very poorly edited for some odd reason. I don’t know.

As for the future:
>One was that there would be a third trilogy outlining the blow by blow of 'you know who's' rise. I know outlines exist for such a story, but just outlines.
This is the “I want to do this” answer.
>The other is that the story is finished. That 'The Unholy Consult', is a fitting way to end a sprawling epic about the death of meaning.
This is clearly the “I’ll just have to cope” answer.

In any case, his brother’s comments at the end are extremely cryptic and it’s clear, and now more evident than ever before, that he has/had plans for a third trilogy.

>For my part, I can't help but to think that this massive story was where Scott's creative life began and, it would not surprise me if, after his real life trials are complete, he doesn't return to it, before the end.

>Like a favourite old coat - warm and comfortable - and smelling of sulfur (:

>Sometimes, life does come full circle.

What the fuck does this mean? Using double negatives and saying “full-circle”? Some people have stated that his brother’s blog on that publication is purely satire. So some people are wondering on how serious we can take his words, although I would think that using his brother’s work and name to make satire would be incredibly bad.

Stormlight is actually his best series, or it was until he decided to amplify the scale of the conflict into a crossover that despite the orgasmic screams of his fandom ended up reducing the importance and stakes of the whole plot. Right now the saga is devolving into reference after reference as if it was a Marvel movie, something to please the autism of the Sanderscholars that nevertheless leaves the feeling of true epic (something present in the first two books) behind, instead giving (at best) a glorified superhero story.
Yes, I am mad. Stormlight could have been his magnum opus but that man had to ruin it. Odium of book 3 and 4 was just pathetic. Go and read Tolkien or someone else when you finish book 2, is just not worth the effort beyond that.

thats fair critizisms, the everybody coming back thing is annoying and I think the author is weirdly obsessed with everything tying back together. its not perfect and it can feel a bit YAF with the conveniences and gimmicks.
I do think however that the first book is the worst of the four in this regard (besides a really annoying deus ex machina moment in the second book) and he does redeem a lot of the issues by really flashing out the characters. at the end of the first book the Amazon is this shitty gimmick-fest and le edgy piratess is quite random too, but they gain a lot of depth as the Story moves on and the mc gets to know them more. I do remember the setting and prose hooking me in and making the reading experience peak COMF which made me want to read more. I will say the character conveniences do not get better, but the characters do. maybe the whole thing would be better as a series of independent short stories nut oh well. Im just shilling this quadrilogy because I really really love the prose and character depth compared to a lot of other fantasy.

There's only two possible explanations for him. One is that he just really has a soft spot for his relatives.
The other is that he planned to make Fang Yaun look like a joke and devour all of them in a massive blood sacrifice to reach rank 10, and the best way to do that it to have as many psuedovenerable descendants as possible. So in other words, he would want them to be invincible and immortal, except against him.

I think the old paper publishing model put practical limitations on story length (which were already much longer than the practical limitations on live performances) that don't exist for web publishing, enabling much longer stories. For indie writers it's a bad thing. With a traditional book publishing model you need a big audience to accumulate a good writing income, which is gatekept by publishers who will take the majority of what you earn. With webnovels there's the possibility to just write a forever-novel for a small but dedicated audience.

I understand how page limits/publishers can fuck things up for the author's plans, but I imagine webnovels have the opposite problem, much like a lot of mangas do. Where they will feel like they need to continue just for the sake of continuing, with no end in sight. Leads to boring filler arcs and pandering to the most vocal supporters.

TWI sounds like it has this problem, is he just writing for the sake of it at this point, making shit up as he goes along?

>TWI sounds like it has this problem, is he just writing for the sake of it at this point, making shit up as he goes along?
Not at all. A lot of people have opnions on what The Wandering Inn surely is, because they cannot comprehend how something can be this long and yet still readable. Honestly, before I read TWI I thought the same.

Imagine this, you have a typical Epic Fantasy story. You get the main characters, some side PoVs, and the events that happen to them. There's start, middle and finish. It might take a few books. Now, imagine the same, but that the story is much, much larger. The beginning of it and setting up the setting and the characters doesn't take a single volume, but several. The scope of the plot is small at first, then widens with each consecutive volume. It starts at a level of a local city, then you get the major cities and continents. All of it woven into gripping storytelling and emotional character arcs.

And the thing is, it's not boring, people wouldn't read it if it was. TWI isn't stretched. It's just massive. But it's hard to convince people of that, because there isn't anything like TWI to compare it to. The author had an out-line of the story and its major events from the start, they are just continously filling it in, sometimes according to the plan, sometimes with new ideas.

And it's been written for 6 years now because the author is obssesed with it. They aren't writing for money, they are writing because they must, mentally. To quote the author:

>I wake up when I'm dozing off to sleep and write down ideas. Sometimes two dozen times which really annoys me when I'm low on sleep. I have ideas when I exercise, and I think of The Wandering Inn constantly, even if not actively.

>I have to. That's the only way to keep the story moving and breathing. I want to because I think if it was compartmentalized, I couldn't give it enough effort.

Honestly, just lock at pic rel, no point repeating what the author themselves wrote.
PS: Inb4 some seething idiot yet again start screeching about no one wanting to read about TWI, if you don't like stop fucking reading about it. It's on you to be as mentally derranged as to compulsively reading the stuff you dislike. Get your meds.

Does he have an end in sight though? Are there already characters who have come and gone and have conclusions? I worry also because of either what you or another anon said about the timeline, which was was apparently everything happens in an instant.

Take Malazan for example, the crippled god is introduced in the first book and the final book is the conclusion of events that have driven the story along. There's still a lot of questions about characters, but it's an ending.
With the god is not willing which is basically Erikson's sequel to Malazan, set 10 years ahead, it's full of new characters whose plot is driven from events in the original series but it is its own thing. Sure some more characters will probably show up, but many won't. In Erikson's ama the other day he said that tavore probably won't be back even tho she's his favorite character. Her story was finished, we don't need to see her Talon Dental Plan or whether she's taken over her families trading company.

That anon was trolling. I'm not sure what 'in an instant' would even mean. It's been years in-story, at least two. But I imagine the time will speed up a little now, considering the recent plot developments. The author has multiple time stated that they have an end in sight, since the very start of the story. 'Their guiding beacon,' as they said.
If you want in-depth write-up on how the author's writing the story, just check this reddit post the author did: https://www.reddit.com/r/WanderingInn/comments/hfy9my/writing_web_serials_by_pirateaba/

>Are there already characters who have come and gone and have conclusions?
Of course, how could be any different in any story? Characters and their stories are TWI's biggest strength, some came and went, some are still there. This isn't some never-ending story with random events cobbled together.

>Take Malazan for example, the crippled god is introduced in the first book and the final book is the conclusion of events that have driven the story along. There's still a lot of questions about characters, but it's an ending.

TWI has a lot of plots, kinda layered together. There's main plot that's been being set-up for multiple volumes, but it was always there, since the start, if you want to know, the story's is mainly about: Dead Gods returning back to life after being 'dead' for a very, very long time. An eon. And the characters trying to, more or less, kill them back.

It's an Epic Fantasy story, events larger than life, you know, the whole package. But the author is building-up the characters and world in which they can have that plot, step by step. There are characters that are mighty and powerful, but most of them are only starting, the story is about the people that one day are going to BE the kind of people that you can see having influence and power to take parts in the story of this calibre. Their entire journey, from their very beginning, not just back-story of characters in few paragraphs. That's what TWI is about, in essence, stories of people that one day will become Legends.
