20734438 No.20734438 [Reply] [Original]

Why hasn't anything been able to recapture the feeling of the original Sprawl trilogy?

Nothing since has come even close to the tone and color of these three books. Not even William Gibson's later books are as good as these.

It feels like Gibson set the bar for Cyberpunk with these and no one since has been able to top it.

yeah i read it on recommendation from a friend who knows my taste and knows i don't like scifi & he's like broooo this is better than most sci-fi you'll love it

first few chapters were good but once the character driven narrative kicks in it goes so far downhill

I kind of felt the same way, and I actually thought Neuromancer was the weakest of the three books. Not sure why it gets all the attention. The following two books have better characters, and feel a little bit less goofy overall.

I thought of the Rastafarian Pilot as one of the cooler characters in the book. He stuck out no worse than the "Scarred African Tribesman in a naval uniform" or the "Dorian Grey Cyborg"

No way. Neuromancer is incomparably better than other two books. Somehow, it just keeps filtering scum around here, especially this summer.

I'd have to find my copy to say specifically, but I remember them both being from the first part of the story, when Case thinks he's being chased by an assassin or something.

Neuromancer is a Kubrick film
Count Zero is a Micheal Bay summer blockbuster film that is "fun" but not really a work of art
Mona Lisa is an Soviet arthouse film

I've always said that if any of the three could be translated to film, Count Zero would be the best to do so.

I love the Sprawl trilogy. Neuromancer is one of my favourite books ever. William Gibson was definitely inspired by something supernatural when he wrote it. You remind me I've been thinking of getting Burning Chrome and Virtual Light for a while.

You could always read the original proto-cyberpunk novel, i.e. "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep" by Philip K. Dick.
It was made into the movie "Blade Runner".
Another one I enjoyed greatly was "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson.

I heard a comparison made that said Gibson is like Don Delillo if he was cool, the same way Cormac McCarthy is Faulkner if he was cool. I think it's a sound assessment. Pynchon works in an entirely different ballpark so the comparison doesn't make sense.
