I'm pretty sure he only picks up that reasoning later. From what I remember of his flashbacks to his youth, I don't think he had that specific goal in mind right from the start. He started off as a relatively cocky dude thinking he'd be able to leverage his first life's knowledge and otherworlder status to have a chosen one's lifestyle, only to get shit on for like the first 100 years straight. It's not like he had a full understanding of what cultivation made possible back then either. Also, the fact that his first life in gu world was heavily manipulated by heaven and the venerables is something that's known either way.
