There's nothing else like it in the genre
If you've only read webnovel trash before this then it's time to move up and read the OG shit like Jim Young

What makes it so great? I've seen people say it's the best web novel ever.

The protagonist is edgier than shadow the hedgehog.

This is the only webnovel I have ever read. From reading other novel's summaries which are hosted on these sites I had a feeling they wouldn't be all that great in comparison. Before this I haven't read many books for a long time, but while reading this I stopped consuming manga and anime, so I guess that's a good thing and maybe there are more good reads. I'll look into your recommendations.

If interested in western books: The Prince of Nothing.

If interested in more xianxia: Warlock of the Magus World, Against the Gods, Aspiring to the Immortal Path

No thanks, I don’t want to read some author’s cuckoldry fetish and feminist spiel.

The thing about Reverend Insanity is that it shits on most xianxia cliches to an extreme and cynical degree
Something like I Shall Seal the Heavens and other works by its author are more standard and imitated in this genre.
If that's more of a typical fantasy, RI is more Moorcock, and Yong is more of a low fantasy Tolkien, wuxia which is what xianxia sprouted from. He wrote in the 50s so isn't part of the webnovel stuff most people are familiar with, so he might be boring to you after reading these

It's probably the closest unfettered character to Fang Yuan you'll find though.
