They're bad even by the standard of children't books. it has this breakneck pace that flattens any of the tension. seemingly important haracters show up for a page or two and then die and are never mentioned again. and it's deathly serious

It's a great kids/YA novel, fills a similar space as The Hobbit. I read it around age 13 and absolutely loved it. I played The Wind Waker around the same time - for a few years I was fascinated by the setting and it fueled my imagination for a good few years following.
