Signal to noise ratio. To be known as a genius a genius needs to have their work acknowledged. The value of the "great minds," is also in large part due to subsequent work with their ideas and commentaries on their thought.

Today you have far more people and far more educated people, with access to books, data, etc. we couldn't dream of before.

I'm a fairly successful guy academically. I went to a good school for undergrad, I went to an elite school for grad school. I'm considering going back to study philosophy but I do so knowing I'll be hard pressed to get a decent job in the field.

There is just way more competition. I independently came up with and developed a decent answer to the Gibbs Paradox for example. Turns out someone already looked at that. Being bright enough to do something big today is harder.

It's bc liberal arts aren't the only thing anymore. Back in the day all there was to know was literature/theology if one was lucky enough to be able to read. Now we have to give mental space to technology and things like that which have little to help with anything related to the liberal arts.
