I would start with her short story "The Lottery," which you might've already read. She is a creative and good storyteller. Technically she is above average but she really knows how to get you hooked in the dark and frightening world's she creates

Why would you post a picture of someone playing Jackson in a movie instead of just posting a picture of Jackson?

P.S. The opening paragraph of The Haunting of Hill House is perfect writing.

The Haunting of the Hill House is genuinely one of the scariest novels I've read. Unlike most horror lit it's not over the top or gross, but very melancholic and toned down yet still really creepy.

Reminds me of thomas ligotti. I should read this

Castle and hill house compliment each other. One starts off sad and becomes creepy while the other starts creepy and becomes sad. Ones horror comes from lonliness while the others come from family. Also there are some very subtle suggestions in castle about constance dreaming marricat (uncle saying she died, maricat knowing the names of the plants despite that being constances thing, maricat never interacting with outsiders who visit except for the cousin? who might also be a manifestation of an internal struggle about wanting to leave the house behind, the questions brought up by the bowl and spider, the childrens rhyme mentioning the nickname marricat...) If so the stories of hill house and castle become inverse, where elenor is left alone by real people while constance isnt left alone by her dream sister.

Writing is very tight but this also means any flowery flourish stands out and stains an otherwise cold and subtle language. The description of wind brushing the grass?? in castle comes to mind. But if i read what initally seemed like that again and again, im able to justify it. Also im still confused why maricat doesnt mention the cat in the first paragraph where shes listing the things she likes.

She's awesome, love her. Haunting of the Hill House has such a distinct voice. Only other novel i read by her was Hangsaman, and I liked it, but not as much as Hill House. She's way better than Stephen King obviously
