Reminds me of the Huffington Post story. Adriana Huffington started a blog site and badgered writers to contribute. She at least paid them per article (a pittance) Fast forward a few years later and she sells the website for 200+ million dollars. Guess how much she gave to the writers? Nothing.

there's been three different editors, over a hundred contributors. the project is public domain so anybody can print it and sell it. it's a creative writing/design collective founded and developed on /lit/. if the project was ever actually worth anything at all, it would only be so because of the irreverence and originality of this board, and it could never be produced naturally by one man alone.

>so the material posted on this site is in the public domain until it is copyrighted
No. Posting a poem for example on the site would effectively establish copyright. The problem for someone seeking to enforce that would be proving that they posted it. Basically without a trip or a draft timestamped before the post, they would be fucked.
You can legally reproduce copyrighted material with expressed permission, or without permission in the case of "fair use". You should probably have read up on that already. I personally don't know how that plays with paid advertising though.
And of course you can just say fuck it and print whatever you want and most likely nothing will happen, unless you did try to pull a HuffPost with it, in which case you would probably get sued out of spite if nothing else.

My guy you don’t even know what a copyright is. A governing body has to formally grant you a copyright, the legal right to reproduce a certain thing. At no point in posting on 4chan does anyone give a fuck, let alone make a registry comparable and give permission to something like copyright.

it actually is how it works in practice.
if i grab some photograph taken by Ansel Adams and try to put it in the public domain, no, that's not going to happen. if i take any photo or piece of writing that has an actual copyright already and i publish it in &amp, it remains a violation.
but nobody reads &amp except us.
and everything else that isn't copyrighted that gets published by &amp can be settled in the inbox or in a courtroom when somebody comes to me to claim ownership of that material.

I like how the little reading thingy on the website makes a delicious page-turning noise when you turn the page. I was reading the magazine while listening to music at full blast (as I usually do) to drown out any painful introspective thoughts I might experience and in those few moments of sobering silence I heard the pages turn and it was orgasmic. I might have to read future editions without listening to music, but that leaves my mind vulnerable.
