>tfw halfway through Lovecraft's complete works

It's been pretty enjoyable so far. Just starting to re-read The Call of Cthulu since it's the next story after Cool Air.

I found Call of Cthulu exceptionally boring.

I enjoy the detective theme in the story, and appreciate the idea that supernatural / cosmic horror was something that only a minority of artistic individuals were disturbed by.

For me? It's Charles Dexter Ward. Even the spergy descriptions of New England architecture are comfy, it's just a nice story to read and hits all the notes you'd want from Lovecraft.

yeah, that cat thing is one of the reasons we respect him.
like Conrad, he knew that the minds of white folk are heightened to the terror that darkness conceals.

I did this a few years ago and had a great time with it. I was blown away by The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. Rats in the Walls is my all time favorite.

My advice is that once you are done with the "official" canon, make sure to take a dip and check out his collaborations and ghost writings too. One of those, Medusa's Coil is Lovecraft at his most inanely racist. Another, The Night Ocean, is Lovecraft at his most ethereal and delicately composed, and is definitely a story that has particularly stuck with me.

Isn’t he super racist? Do you have to be a /pol/tard to enjoy his works?

Most racist of his stuff I've read so far is Shadow over Innsmouth, and honestly I'm on the fence on if the ending was him poking fun at his own racism or not. Most of his work has nothing to do with that stuff desu.

It's overrated. By itself it's not a bad short story. You're just expecting more from it because of hype.

>>20608090
yep

>>20612708
His racism is mostly in his letters. His stories have a lot of xenophobia and miscegenation horror, but the xenos are aliens from "outside"

This is my favorite HPL collected works. It arranges all of his dream stories in chronological order so you get a coherent thread about his thoughts on dreams.

I also love Kadath. Lots of people don't. You are an anon of rarefied taste.
