What's your favorite loli from a recent read?

>> No.20598557 [DELETED]

This is probably the new strategy:
When a report threshold is reached, the thread is deleted. Make terrible posts. Drag others into it. Report their own posts with a different IP address. Others are reporting the posts as well. This makes reaching the threshold a relatively easy matter. Thus, a bind is created. If no reports, the spammers run rampant and the threads are unusable. If reports, the the thread is deleted.

I think Sanderson's at his best when he's NOT trying to tie everything into everything else. A multiverse is one thing, making every story have to be PART of the multiverse's grand story is another.

So maybe his best stuff is standalone Cosmere stuff? Or maybe Emperor's Soul just works because it's short and Brandon had to cram his usual pacing down into that word count. It also has a few other restrictions (largely taking place in one room, only a few characters, etc.) so he probably needs those to really do anything good.

Since no one here is actually discussing sci-fi, I'll start.
Who here is a fan of my main man Philip K. Dick?
"Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep" set the whole cyberpunk genre in motion.
"Ubik" is schizoid enough to make Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance look rational.
"The Three Stigmata Of Palmer Eldritch" is terrifying enough to give H.P. Lovecraft a run for his money.
I could go on.

I'm gonna ask it here and now.
How do you read more?
I've been awake for 10 hours and I've gone on 4chan, ate supper (breakfast) hung out with my friends and ate supper (real), came home, jerked off, went on 4chan and I also watched some youtube in there. There are people with full time jobs that make time for exercise and all the important life shit and they read more than me. I have no excuse. I haven't had a job in 3 years.
My brain keeps telling me I want to read it all so I know what's the best of sci-fi (at least for my taste) so I can talk about it here, make obnoxious shitposts, and obviously enjoy the reading part. I read 100 pages of Hyperion yesterday and enjoyed all of it and thought "I had fun doing that." But here I am, putting it off.

I'd like to be a participating member of all this. I have 250 books downloaded. About half of those are sci-fi and some fantasy, the rest are classics and whatever else. I've got all the hot hits at my finger tips like Wizard Knight, Neuromancer, New Sun, Tolkien, Black Company, and I've already read Blindsight, Dune, 3 Body Problem, Ender's game and most of it's sequels as a teen.
What's wrong with me? Why can't I just sit down and pump them out? It's a much better use of my time.

It's why I cut in line in front of everybody that had seniority over me, because I wanted to help. But I made the mistake of thinking a company would care and also I've never negotiated before so my salary was shit, I was making 1.50 more than my support operator position but had way more responsibility and the first shift girl who had my position turned out to be a cunt so I resented the job after a few months.
So imagine the useless fucks on the floor who don't ever apply to drive forklift or ever even apply for management. I fucking hate that I have to defend unions because I hate so many of those busybody assholes.

Not all fantasy books are good at escapism. The author has to build a big, believable world which you yearn for through your elated, elevated existence to experience such a wonderful world wholly as its own unreal reality realized with real eyes.

I had the same problem. "Kinda sorta want to read" but just didn't. It went like that for years. My best year was when i read all three Metro books, two years ago. But around that, nothing. Years of not reading anything. While at the same time my backlog just kept getting bigger...

Then i just came to the point when i decided to go and get myself something to read, anything, so i started with a small book that had a collection of Conan short-stories. That one small book, took me a while, but when i was finished i decided i was ready to just stop dicking around. (Even though the Conan books where something that was on my backlist.)

I read through 2 Dragonlance (Chronicles) books in a month, King Beyond The Gate in a week. And now i'm starting Gates Of Fire, by Steven Pressfield. These where all borrowed from my local library. When i'm through Gates of Fire, next up is Azincourt, 2 Warhammer books and/or another book with Robert E. Howard short-stories. They in in nice pile, waiting for me to pick them up. I plan on going through these in the next two months at my own pace.

Now as far as how *you* personally will do it all i can't really say. What helped me personally was making a conscious decision to watch less YouTube and read less about pointless horseshit online. (News) That in itself freed a good amount of time and energy for me. Right now i have about 1 to 2 hours of good reading time a day and i almost never skip it.

Now, i never leave my apartment without one book with me.

Finally, i feel accomplished. Less guilty of wasting my time. And reading also feels really good in itself. It's a special feeling when you are reading a good book, while at the same time being aware that most of the everyday "normal" tv watching joes will probably never experience this story. I feel like i'm taking part in some kind of secret society. :D

Oh and i'm jobless too atm too, multiple years.

>> No.20599846

Oh, and i'd also like to add that maybe start with something easier to read, and move to some of the bigger books later. Open the books you have and look at what the text looks like. I don't think it's a good idea to start with Lord Of The Rings or something, unless you are really going to finish it. You don't want to get burned up and bored because of something that your mind is not quite ready yet. (Since you have in a way trained your mind for quick-fixes of instant gratification with YouTube and the modern way of life)

Now Tolkien is on my list too and Dune but i'm working my strength up with smaller, easier books before them. Read smart. Start easy.

This shit reminds me so much of The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett. I'm only about 15% of the way in but the dynamic between Chao, Huifen and Chao's father rings so close to Rojer, Leesha and Arlen. Not only that, but I would bet any amount of money that the female lead is going to get raped due to the sheer amount of mentions of 'virgin yin' and her 'divine body'.

Anyone else in thread read this title before? I'm tempted to sub this title out before this 16 year old is molested.

I hear your advice, friend. I know and understand the pointless horseshit (news) part all to well as I frequent /pol/ just so I can get mad and enjoy my anger. But I also know that nothing will come of it. I already learned what I need to learn and I'm not going to *politically motivated violence* unless the government does some heinous shit, and well, let's just leave it on /pol/.
I'll also check out the books you listed. Perhaps some of my problem is I happen to keep tackling something that interests me the most but it's very long. The classics, for example. I read the Count of Monte Cristo at 600 pages and found out that was an abridged version. It was my favorite book so of course I need to read the Robin Buss translation now.
Dune wasn't as long but it's still one of the bigger sci-fi ones. Hyperion has a similar page count. I'm 20% of the way through and my kindle says I have 19 hours and 30 minutes left.
After that I'm going to do some of the smaller ones. Freeze Frame Revolution seems interesting at 194 pages. So even though I'm swept up in the mystery of this greatest book ever written in 'Book of the New Sun', I suppose I'll wait until I get some other books under my belt.

I've decided that I will use nights as my time to read since no one else is up I need complete silence or nature sounds only to read (I read by the lake last week on vacation) and I stay up until morning anyway.

Big spoilers: Huifen does get raped but she eventually becomes un-raped through recovery of her virgin yin and Chao nothing personnels the dude who did it. There is an entire plotline involving Chao being 'ruthless' enough to ascend to the apex of cultivation with Huifen and this event seals the deal

I think I accidentally that one too because I didn't double check to check and see if it was written by the main two authors but it was listed as part of the mainline story (all the trilogies one after another.) Anyway, it was MUCH different than the rest of Dragonlance.

That gave me almost extra three hours to read (smartphones didn't exist back then) on top of reading before bed every night. I fell out of the habit of reading as an adult for a while. What worked for me might not work for you. I quit YouTube and 4chan is the only entertainment website I use for any significant amount of time. I do not own a smartphone at all. They are the devil's device. I set a kitchen timer, a digital one, for thirty minutes when I DON'T feel like reading. I've trained myself to start reading as soon as I set it. My sister in-law's husband had to sleep in that room one weekend and he couldn't even find a spot to do push-ups without stacking furniture on top of itself. That's only the book room. You can barely move in their entire house. They can't find anything when they need it. There is no surface in the house that isn't piled high with random objects they do not use. It's a mental illness. Have you ever tried putting flooring down in a hoarder's house? Have fun moving ceramic dogs and urns around in between swinging a hammer.

Pity.
I really enjoyed it, but from doing some reading around online it seems that the sudden end was caused by Cook's drafts of the planned final 3 books being stolen in the 80's. He never finished the series until a new publisher picked it up and made him finish it. They said if he didn't they would make erikson finish it. So he did, and I did like the last book honestly, it wrapped up a lot of stuff but clearly there were unfinished things and character arcs I would have liked to seen through.
Especially after the prequel books, I was hoping to see more of Haroun's antics.

Self-knowledge. You have to understand that you have a dependency on the internet, and treat it like you're kicking an addiction. Which means you're almost certainly going to have relapses even if you make the behavioral changes you want. With reading, I find it's always tempting to jump on here and post about what you read.
You have to make the decision to read instead of consuming other forms of entertainment. But you need a good reason for that decision or it won't stick. Once you get the ball rolling by reading something you enjoy a lot, you'll have more motivation to keep doing it.
Since you have so many books downloaded, I recommend going down your list of the ones you're most interested in and reading the first chapter. If you don't like it within 20 minutes, set it aside until something hooks you. That will help you not to get discouraged.

We dug rocks out of the ground and fed red hot fires for centuries to sharpen copper and tin to a point so that we can stab each other through whatever armor was fashioned before then and stick our foes from 6 meters away. And when that wasn't enough trial and error for need of something harder brought us steel so that we can swing and swing and swing, and go to the next battle and swing and swing.

I was so surprised to learn that people hate Faile, Galad/Gawyn, Perrin/Faile's relationship and so on. These are some of my favorite characters! Galad slaying Eamon Valda was a top tier moment.
I'm a little more biased towards the end books since I just read them, but I absolutely love the beginning of book 4 when everyone is chilling in the stone of tear. You get a really unique Moiraine POV where she is deep in thought while also easily playing the highlords against themselves and contemplating what Rand is going to do next. That chapter really stood out to me.

Perrin vs. Slayer battles were awesome. Absolutely insane balefire crazy rand in book 11 was soooo interesting and the Zen Rand moment on dragonmount in book 12 was top tier. All the build up in WOT is worth it. All of it.
It is so funny to read about how people couldn't get past like 4 books in this series because you just know they didn't even encounter a true Mat chapter yet.
My girlfriend is now reading the series and she's finishing up book 3 now so I'm dipping in and out and reading the chapters that she's on. I'm probably going to do a reread while she's doing her initial readthrough. It is really nuts how much you miss during the first read.

yeah, when i finished reading and starting looking at wot forums i was surprised everyone hated faile so much (and egwene). i wasn't surprised by gawyn, though, he was quite the shit character and i would've much preferred if egwene had fallen in love with a young strapping aiel (approved by sorilea ofc) which i think would've been an excellent venue to explore the interactions of the aiel with wetlanders as they acclimate in a more personal matter

there are lot of comfy moments. since you mention the stone i remember how at the end of the dragon reborn everyone was reunited in that conference room inside the stone and were processing the recent happenings and the berelain barges in, it's like they had just saved the day and then a new problem is thrust upon them to solve

I got no problem with his endings, actually quite enjoy them because as a true Lynch-fag I enjoy a certain lack of closure as it keeps the story alive, and I went to one of his Q&A's and just wanted to ask him why he chose abrupt endings like that curious what he would say.
Holy shit he acted like I'd raped his mother and very aggressively told me that he's actually written quite a few denouements in his day thank you very much and furthermore all his most recent books (I haven't read any of em I stopped at Crypto) have proper endings so please stop asking this.
I was kind of just like, oh, okay, and walked back to my chair with the whole crowd glaring at me. Then the next guy got to the mic and said some shit like just for the record I love your endings! And the whole room clapped for him.

Most people dislike his prose. He writes very simplistically and his characters are usually pretty one dimensional. The one thing he's really good at though is worldbuilding. An analogy I've heard for him is that he's the IKEA of Sci-Fi writers. He builds massive plotlines with whole roomfuls of characters and brings everything together exactly where it's supposed to and makes it look easy but his actual writing is pretty barebones. I personally enjoy him but I realize he's basically a schlock writer that occasionally stumbles upon interesting plots.
TLDR He's a hack but some of his work (YJK, Seven Suns) is enjoyable.

He also answered all of my annoying questions on Goodreads so he gets some points for that.

That ending pissed me off.

Natalie and Saul ''win'' by lowering themselves to the same level as the creatures they despise so much: manipulating Melanie into conditioning and finally Using an innocent military man into ordering the bombing of the island and yacht. They knew very well that later that man would be convicted in a military court and spent the rest of his life in prison or get the death sentence (if Melanie didn't dispose of him before that). They ruined an innocent man's life. How is that different from the Oberst ruining the life of the man he used to kill Lee Harvey Oswald? Natalie is extra hypocritical for the line ''no one deserves to die as an extra in a B horror movie''. It runs out our heroes are no different from the Mossad terrorists or Palestinian terrorists. The Oberst was right, he won.

>> No.20604711

>>20604697
Also their masterplan was to infiltrate a geriatric scholar into the island so he could play Rambo and NOT be killed, Used or captured in a thousand different ways that would ruin the mission, in the hopes that he could reach the very specific scenario of being alone with the Oberst and being Used by him? That is so incredibly stupid, it makes me mad that I wasted so much time with this long ass book.

Has anybody here read Dawn by Octavia Butler? I picked it up for a uni class and have been assuming it was trash picked because of who the author was, thus I never read it.

And I almost forgot: Tony Harod, who seemed to be on a genuine path of self-improvement, if not redemption, gets the short end of the stick. While Saul and Natalie get a happy ending. What a sick joke.

I liked the scholastic Jedi Apprentice. Reading about Kenobi going from a Youngling to Padawan and going on adventures were great.

Never read the one with Anakin and Obiwan, but I heard it was decent. I should really read the clone wars books.

Definitely, he writes the best Star Wars novels in my opinion. I still love his Darth Plageuis novel.

Existence by David Brin, but I personally hated it and could never finish it. It's kind of dragged down by its own internal politics and none of the characters were compelling or worth caring about. The parts actually related to first contact and not the socio-political machine that was processing it were actually kind of interesting, but I don't have too much to say beyond that because I could never bring myself to finish the damn book.
