Living it’s either Pynchon or McCarthy
All time it’s hard to say, maybe either Faulkner or Nabokov (the latter is a writer of American literature and he considered himself so, Lolita was written in English), though the best American singular work of fiction is Melville’s Moby-Dick, Nabokov and faulkner both (and pynchon and McCarthy as well) were much more consistent than Melville, who’s writing is mostly good but his great works only number one longish novel/prose poem, a collection of short stories, and a long rhyming poem about pilgrimage.
Anyone who says Hemingway needs to read more books, that’s the equivalent of calling Virginia Woolf the greatest English author. They are both quintessential favourite authors of teenagers/20 somethings that barely read
