Genuine malevolence exists, and you (might) relate to it. Enzian and Blicero spent most of the story building rockets to perpetuate a war that had already ended. though thinking about this further, I'd caveat this by saying GR does not really fully imply that all rebellion is unnecessary. it's hard to really summarize a book like GR under one big point anyway.

>"The basic problem," he proposes, "has always been getting other people to die for you. What's worth enough for a man to give up his life? That's where religion had the edge, for centuries. Religion was always about death. It was used not as an opiate so much as a technique-- it got people to die for one particular set of beliefs about death. Perverse, naturlich, but who are you to judge? It was a good pitch while it worked. But ever since it became impossible to die for death, we have had a secular version-- yours. Die to help History grow to its predestined shape. Die knowing your act will bring a good end a bit closer. Revolutionary suicide, fine. But look: if History's changes are inevitable, why not not die? Vaslav? If it's going to happen anyway, what does it matter?"
>"But you haven't ever had the choice to make, have you."
>"If I ever did, you can be sure--"
>"You don't know. Not till you're there, Wimpe. You can't say."
>"That doesn't sound very dialectical."
>"I don't know what it is."
>"Then, right up till the point of decision," Wimpe curious but careful, "a man could still be perfectly pure . . . "
>"He could be anything. I don't care. But he's only real at the points of decision. The time between doesn't matter."
>"Real to a Marxist."
>"No. Real to himself."

It's about submission to fate. Some incredible feats of engineering give us the ability to control the trajectory of a rocket up until Brennschluss, when the fuel of the rocket is exhausted completely. Afterward, its path is determined only by the forces of gravity and chance. So the path of the rocket, or 'gravity's rainbow', has this duality to it. Man controls as much as he can, but the ultimate destination of the rocket is in the hands of Fate.
Notice, too, how Tchitcherine, the hypermasculine barbarian hell bent on delivering _his_ revenge, is placed under a spell by the Geli Tripping, the witch who waits for `the luminous spaces Pan will carry her to`. Fate is controlled only by those who accept it.

The newfags are mad, but it really is about capitalism. The book harps over and over about the Calvinist inside of everyone's head calling all the shots in a Freudian Daddy sort of way, hence all of the penis jokes. I mean jesus christ all you have to do is read a single chapter to see that it's about the domination of the natural world intertwining with the domination of man's desires. At every turn of phrase in the novel, he? hides behind masculine and feminine pronouns and "names" which are just masks or shells. Why not interrogate the assumptions behind these? >It therefore struck me as surprising how little information I could find on Pynchon and the enlightenment, as discussed in Dialectic. Given the timing of his writing of Gravity’s Rainbow (and previous books) and the influence of Adorno and Horkheimer on the counterculture of the period, I was expecting to struggle to find a niche in this area, only to find—in my admittedly limited online search as I could not access plenty of databases—no articles directly linking either authors or works. It is not that the term enlightenment has never been brought up among Pynchon admirers, but the research that has been conducted centred more on the concept of spiritual enlightenment in his novels, rather than the enlightened science that lived well past the Age of Enlightenment. I could not go as in depth as I could have but given how much I had to leave out of this thesis for the sake of length there is future potential for more thorough research and analysis of enlightened criticism in Pynchon’s work.

This is one of the funniest things i've read in a long time. There is zero authority in "I even published a thesis" apparently. Good job lol

>Gravity's Rainbow analyzes globalization and empire both in their political dimensions and in their tendencies to destroy individual identity. Politically, Pynchon examines and critiques empires ranging from the Germans and their dealings with the African Hereros, to Dutch colonial Mauritius, to British, Russian, and American plans for world domination. As depicted in the novel, empire building is a means of subjugating another culture and controlling the lives of everyone living in it. Additionally, Pynchon outlines a widespread conspiracy in the non-governmental arena of capitalist globalization. The novel suggests that war is a means for companies such as Shell and General Electric to continue the business of buying and selling, with no regard for human life and little tolerance for individuals who want to control their own destinies.

>Racism is a common element in many of Pynchon's key storylines, and Pynchon considers the theme of race within the setting of World War II as well as the 1960s U.S. civil rights movement. The quest to find Enzian's African Schwarzkommando is perhaps the most prominent of the plotlines in which Pynchon explores race relations. Characters such as Slothrop and Tchitcherine are obsessed with racial difference, and their obsessions trace back to childhood traumas involving racist conditioning. Blicero and others are also prejudiced against Jews, and Pynchon writes openly about the horrors of the Holocaust. Much of Pynchon's black and white symbolism and allusion (Geli Tripping's white magic or the imagery surrounding Domina Noctura, for example) emphasizes that racism is widespread, formidable, and dominant in postwar Western culture. Pynchon also connects racist ideology to capitalist and governmental conspiracies such as that of the German company IG Farben, which used concentration camp labor to produce chemicals, one of which was the Zyklon-B rat poison used in the gas chambers to exterminate Nazi prisoners.

IG Farben was built up with US capital (Nazi germay was in fact built up through US loans) im pretty sure and their factories were spared from allied bombing raids from memory. Which speaks volumes considering the wehrmacht relied on synthetic oils it provided. Even though American oil companies did outright provide refueling stations for U-boats wolfpacks. Pynchon's saying that - "they" who own America, own Germany too. At least that's one angle, but I've yet to see that sexless faggot substantiate his claim that any of it is to do with 'losing friends'.

You know, people are being dicks to you but I think it’s not fair. I think you wrote this with good intentions so I’d like to offer some advice as a PhD in Literature.

First, I recommend rereading a book after the initial read. Often on the first reading one hooks onto certain themes that seem to exist but upon later readings one is able to dig down to a deeper level and find nuances that one could not catch at first.

Second I’d recommend finding what’s known as secondary literature about the book. This means reading articles and books about the book. For more famous books there’s often a wealth of literature and just about anything one can think of has probably already been written. This can help one to really delve into a book.

Anyway, I think for a first attempt this was a really good effort and don’t let 4chan get you down.
