Things loose their novelty. To keep wowing people you have to perpetually amp things up. So long anthologies either start going bonkers or get stale, nether is really conducive to good storytelling.

Authors get big heads and stop accepting good criticism from pre-readers or editors who also become less eager to question the ways of a successful author.

Authors get lazy and some cheat, hiring ghost writers and whatnot.

Book sales taper off and may not justify the amount of effort. The ninth book in a series will not move as many copies as the first.

Another good one - Napoleon Bonaparte series by Arthur Upfield. Half-caste Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte blends his hyperlogical white side and the intuitive mysticism of his abbo half together to solve crimes in a interwar to midcentury Australia, fully colonized but with a sort of feudal structure given the limitations of distance and technology. It's well-observed and comes across as real even though I have no reference for that time and place to compare it to. It's also intriguing to hear someone speak so openly and with no malice about things nobody can say today and are automatically taken as malicious. 29 books and I've read all but one by now, I think.

The first book being released after Tolkien's death (that was in his Secondary World) was The Silmarillion, which Tolkien had been working for almost 50 years; though he never published it in live, due to paper costs of the time and the publishers not wanting to.

That can be argued, but I don't believe so.
A lot of his posthumous books are complemented by commentary (of his son Christopher usually). Giving an analysis of the evolution of each tale and the context behind them. The Silmarillion being one of those exceptions; being an amalgamation of versions edited together. But even the materials it uses are dissected and justified on other books, like pic related.
More disrespectful would be, I think, to try and finish it with your own words and pass it as his.

Dons'mooglin

Intelligent beings are merely nodes in god's mind. He knows all, but only through your knowledge and experience. The creation of knowledge is good and it's destruction is evil. Overpopulation is a desirable state as it creates more processing power for god. Even things like torture and pleasure are good in that it increases the knowledge of such things, however tormented individuals must be kept alive so their knowledge won't die with them. Books and such are good things as they help preserve knowledge but it must be known by an intelligent being for it to be of real use to god. This god never actually communicates with his disciples and he rarely manifests any actual miracles but his disciples are keen to look for them regardless often attributing rather benign things as proof of their gods existence and power. It is often difficult to understand why some of the more profound miracles are manifested but one thing is certain, those who profane the cathedral of knowledge and try to pass off knowingly false understandings come to rather humorous and unexpected deaths. This religion is responsible for much of the science in the world and has a middling interest in spying and criminals investigations if only to avoid the the loss of the knowledge of such events when those involved die. They have a charitable arm that provides the barest necessities of life to people in exchange for memorizing tables of data from absolutely inane things like 500 year old weather reports recorded by a ships steward. Practitioners shave the sides of their heads but wear a top knot, no one really knows why.

Don't ask them about the hairdo, they tend to be quite sensitive over that bit of missing understanding.

Killing a practitioner is seen as being an unlucky thing to do. One noble who raped and murdered a practitioner found himself unable to ejaculate ever after. The owner of a ill maintained cart that crushed another soon found himself with a debilitating case of arthritis, and he was only 37. Intent doesn't seem to be a big factor, killing one by mistake carries a similar severity of outcome as killing one from malice.

The effects seems to diminish the farther they stray from their seat of power. So pilgrims in search of ancient tomes or wanting to preserve contemporary knowledge in distant lands need to be weary. Likewise foreigners visiting from abroad may not believe in the superstitions and could have an interesting learning experience.

Governments have come to the conclusion that conscripting them in military service is not advisable neither is restricting their travels or activities.

And the knowledge they hoard is a commodity that can be purchased. It is collected by going to an indexer or a person who knows what other people know, this may take several steps in a seemingly haphazard way before a pauper is brought up from the slums to recite to the accounts from the diary of some noble as he traveled in a distant land way back when.

The books exist in the cathedral, but they are only organized by who was assigned to memorize them so they know when to pass them off to someone else when that retainer dies. If knowledge dies those books are simply piled up in a que of knowledge needing to be learned and it may take a while before someone is appointed to re-learn it.

Soulship (Book 1: First Orbit) – Nathan Thompson

[Our MC] Jasper Cloud is a teenage orphan, recycled through the system ever since his parents were executed by the Glorious State nearly 10 years ago. Having been targeted ever since, he’s a malnourished and skeletal figure that goes out of his way to protect others. This doesn’t make his life any easier, as the State has decided to get rid of him now that he’s ‘aged out’ of his orphanage. Our other MC is a fellow orphan, a young woman named Nova that Jasper protected at the orphanage. Thanks to his nurturing during their childhood, she was able to become an officer with the State and become a true citizen.

[Plot] Our story begins on Earth after a totalitarian police state has taken over the world government. After suppressing books and media, they've united the planet under one language - English. After Jasper is kicked out of the orphanage, he is escorted to a Rehabilitation Center by Nova… before they both wise up to what ‘rehabilitation’ truly entails. During all of this, the entire city is receiving messages in illegal languages which causes the state to go on high alert. The only person that appears to be able to decipher the language is Jasper, having been taught it by his parents before they were executed for thought-crimes.

Jasper receives instructions from a disembodied voice to ‘activate’ Nova by showing her a phrase in one of the banned languages. After reading it Nova is suddenly manifests super-human abilities. The two of them begin to flee from the city towards a secluded spot in the woods so that the incorporeal voice can lock onto their position. It turns out that Nova is an Emissary of a Soulship, a sentient biological colony ship that previously helped to spread humanity and life throughout the universe to combat the ‘great darkness’. Jasper is merely her ‘Defender’, expected to get Nova to the teleportation point and nothing else.

Best laid plans. In a turn of events, Jasper Cloud ends up aboard a derelict soulship WITHOUT Nova. After exploring the ship, he discovers a pale blue woman in a clear observable tube near the back who looks identical to his friend. With most of the soulship destroyed and the habitat infested with monsters, she reveals to Jasper that if he doesn’t help her save Nova… then the entire universe is DOOMED. Resolving himself to save both Nova and this Soulship, Jasper asks the ship to teach him.

[System] The system relies on the user intaking one of three magical sources: essence, qi or mana, with each providing a different benefit. In most cases a ‘Practitioner’ can only tap into a single source. It’s explained that our MC is the only one on the historical record to draw in all three. To balance the magical source within yourself, Practitioners will imagine a ‘Soulscape’ which is often an weapon or tool. By making his Soulscape a planetary body, our MC can apply each of the magical sources to its atmosphere, oceans and crust he can balance this power.

>>20589406
The ranks weren’t introduced until over halfway through the book, but each stage includes 10 sub-stages. Most people in this universe never breach the tenth substage. Qi condensation is divided into drops, mana stages are divided into wisps, and natal essence is divided into cracks. ‘Get ten of the same substage to advance.’ Stages are generalized as benefits to strength, speed, perception, and mental fortitude. They can also cast spells and techniques.

There’s no real rhyme or reason to theses, being generalized to Shield and Magic Missile variations. In addition to this, most Practitioners bond with a spirit beast to increase their abilities and affinity with their chosen source. In Jasper’s case, he finds a lifemouse which is the BEST spirit beast for advancement. This companion is far less endearing than most, using double words to talk. Mouse-mouse is not a strong-strong character-character.

[Final Thoughts] Did not enjoy this. In the first chapter alone, the two characters go over the entirety of their backstories, dwell on the injustices of the 1968 world, elaborate on an entire romance sub-plot and then violently introduce fantasy, sci-fi and wuxia concepts all within the same few paragraphs. The main character opts out of being a character after the first chapter, instead taking orders and cultivating while being told how overpowered he is. The author also seems to be setting up multiple romance subplots all with the same woman or versions of the same woman. If the book weren’t so fucking boring, I’d be interested to explore that if nothing else – s’different.

Every ounce of this book is provided through exposition between the Soulship (Vessa) and Jasper. The few moments when the Soulscape or spirit beasts come up are interesting, but poorly utilized. Better than Soulhome’s cultivation system, but the story and method of presentation is so terrible I must take points off. Hate to hit on this point, but so very little is shown to us but one or two rooms and one or two planets, while every ounce of the rest of the universe is told to us through Vessa. There’s definitely an interesting character dynamic here, it’s just written in such a shitty bi-polar way.

It's been years so the details are scant but I remember it had to do with MC mentally facing off against these strong shadow entities that were all written distinctly, which was fun, and I believe it was one of the few times his Anchor Knight powers kicked in which made the Bad Dudes shit themselves but it was still resolved mentally, not physically. And now there's a chance they show up every time a new... whatever the fuck it is, checkpoint thing is cleared to, that Vessa has to activate herself requiring Jasper's protection.

They're solidly-written books that have pacing issues and the problem of retreading character arcs. Sanderson has a general issue with bloat, in that he keeps making things more than they need to be. This is why his absolute best story is The Emperor's Soul because it's condensed. I wouldn't say Stormlight is not worth reading, but they're not something I super look forward to.

His most genuine characters are the ones that don't feel like they're relevant to the grander story. There's a reason Kelsier is so well-liked despite biting it early in the Mistborn trilogy. He occasionally puts out characters that're clearly written first for being the characters, with their roles filled out later, and those are often his best ones. Characters like Kaladin and Shallan are written entirely for their role, so they feel more like plot devices.

Well, not so much embraced as realized how much he is insane and just rolled with it, acting like a Joker and trampling over Fool's plans, just because he could and it would, kinda, fuck over his friends if the demons were to succeed. He is crying, because Tom liked Fool, they both knew how fucked the situation is between the Demon Kingdom and the Blighted Kingdom, Tom didn't give a shit for either side. Now he is aware what kind of bullshit King Othius pulled off, and the price of it.

As for Rags and Toren, not sure which arcs you reference. Remember how long the story is, I need more data.

15 chapters into He Who Fights With Monsters book 4. I'm enjoying the Earth stuff, but how long does it last? I find myself mostly just wanting things to go back to normal even though it's bordering the type of urban fantasy I prefer. I'm not a fan of the masquerade, and the set up of the secret of magic just on the edge of becoming public would be very appealing to me if it was a series that started at that point instead of pivoting into it like this has. I do like the little twists it's introduced to the magic though, and would like to see them carried over.

I was pleasantly surprised by Lord of the Mysteries. Its translation is absolute crap at the start but begins to flow better after about 50 chapters, though not by much. Had to adjust my frame of reference for it but the characters, system and world is interesting enough to keep me engaged. I recommend you power through the start of Clown and see how you like it by the 1/4 point.

Ave Xia Rem Y had an exceptional start but I think the subsequent arcs are starting to bury that strong lead. I could see my score degrading the more I read of it, which is why I stopped prior to the... badlands sect leadership competition arc. I'll likely come back to it once the author has completed 'book one'.

Ah, well, duly noted on LotM. I'm the guy who suggested Dungeon Crawler Carl a while back and I still stand by that being pretty great. It's very different from basically everything else you've read on the list, but I think it's one of the better webnovels out there (even if it's not actually one anymore). What series DO you want to keep reading? Obviously Cradle, you've mentioned you wanna read Bastion's sequel when it comes out (which I do too, because it feels like there's POTENTIAL for a pretty good sequel if the story doesn't just meander around the same area for 800 pages again), but what else?

It's moreso disappointing that we never get chapters back on the fantasy world. It would've been a lot more interesting to see how they were coping with Jason's supposed death, see how Sophie and such were doing in his absence because she definitely seemed in a bad way after that. Which one's Craig again? A lot of the Earth cast blends together for me.

>Cradle by Wight
>Bastion by Tucker
>Mother of Learning (Arc 3) by Kurmaic
>Lord of the Mysteries by Cuttlefish
> Ave Xia by Haz (whenever Arc 1 finishes)

I'm tempted to pick up A Thousand Li #2 but it seems to be the trope setter, with most of its ideas handled better in the series I listed above. I'm also eternally shamed to say that I might pick up Reverend Insanity #2. It's cultivation system still stands out compared to a lot of what I've read.

Yeah, fair enough. MoL has the fairly universal webnovel problem where the early stuff is experimental and interesting, but unfocused, the middle stuff is more structured but due to an unclear goal doesn't really go anywhere, and the later stuff actually builds towards something and realises "oh right I have to TELL A STORY". Honestly this is my problem with a lot of webnovels I've read (or rather, I've read the novels of, DotF and HWFWM mainly), they just meander so much.

It's why I can't find myself going back to Forge of Destiny after learning every chapter's decisions are put to a group vote on some forum. Glad you enjoy Volume 5, Anon, It's an excellent volume, especially the later parts. I think this was when TWI started becoming really popular, justifiably so.

How do I get over the old, better classic sci-fi being written at a time when I know computers were big fucking tubes?
I haven't even started Asimov because I cannot get the mint and puke green image of an American kitchen set in that era (50's-70's) out of my head.

You don't read Asimov for whacky Sci-Fi tech, you read him for the vision of a future so far that people forget there was an Earth and the technology is actually in decline. There's bigger focus on people and their attitudes in the far future than on technology, that is secondary.
