Wait, so Jesus goes around saying Yahweh's Old Testament catchphrase "I AM" and "I am He", and as soon as he's confronted by the Jews for blasphemy, he says "Just kidding, I'm just calling myself god the same way you guys are called gods (little g)." Then he continues to say "I am Yahweh" until they kill him for it.

I don't get it.

>Exodus 3:14
14 God said to Moses, “I AM who I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

>Deuteronomy 32:39
See now that I, I am He, and there is no God besides Me;

>John 8:58
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”

>John 10:33-36
The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.” Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’? If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be broken—do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?

>John 18:6
When Jesus said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

The understanding i was told on a Sam Harris podcast 5 years ago was... jesus was trying fulfill the jewish belief of the return of the messiah. He was supposed to be made king and bring in a new era. He was killed thus defeating the belief and christianity is just a huge cope he was killed and not made the new god king. I have no idea if this is accurate or not im just parroting a ex christian theologist that was on some jews podcast.

This is not true at all. That is what the Pharasaical Jews wanted, but it is not what the Lord Jesus Christ intended.
The Jews wanted their Messiah to be a political ruler who would overthrow the Roman authorities and make the Jews a powerful nation. That is never what Jesus Christ intended.

Christ reigns as King even as we speak. The exceedingly primitive and materialistic Jews interpreted the reign of the Messiah as exclusively worldly and political. The OT has two strands of the Messiah. He who suffers, and he who reigns eternally like a Son to God his Father. The Talmudists coped by believing that there were two Messiahs— Messiah ben Joseph and Messiah ben David. The entire Jewish world was expecting the Messiah in the 1st century, and Jesus Christ fulfilled it, and the Pharisees crucified him and were left in the wake, searching for the Messiah who will never come. In time they will get the Antichrist though, who will be the worldly king they desire

Where? He just reaffirmed his divinity.
>do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?
The previous passage is just how he talks to the Pharisees: always quoting the Law because they were legalists, which he mocked.

That passage does not debunk the point. The Son is not the Father either, btw

He's saying he's calling himself "god" as in the way the Old Testament calls judges "gods". A lesser divinity title, not God Almighty.

This is not a tenable interpretation. John 1 says that Jesus Christ is the Logos become flesh. All over the Gospels prophecies applied to YHWH from prophets such as Isaiah are applied directly to Jesus. John ends with Thomas calling Jesus ‘My Lord and My God’ too. Jesus is also identified as the hypostatic Wisdom of God from the Wisdom of Solomon and the Book of Proverbs, where in Proverbs 9 Wisdom is offering that people come drink her bread and wine, a clear prototype of the eucharist. The way Jesus talks in John clearly shows he self-identified as divine as well, referring to himself as the True Vine, one with the Father, omniscient, able to forgive sins, and much more. Even the Jews recognize what Jesus is doing and saying. This is fully in accordance with Paul, and with the catholic epistles, and with Revelation which shows Christ as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, both terms applied to YHWH. To say that the Gospel of John doesn’t have a capital g ‘God’ Jesus is laughable.
