20573253 No.20573253 [Reply] [Original]

Some questions for the real pyncholes:

1. Why does Pointsman think Slothrop is a monster?

2. What does he think he's going to learn?

3. Pointsman means a child when he says "Fox" but what does Spectro mean? A dog?

Additionally, I'm only now understanding how much of the book is about losing his buddy Richard Fariña. People saying his early books have no heart? Fuck off.

Idk. It’s one of the only scenes I remember fondly from like 8 years ago. I found the rest forgettable. I felt it was soulless because it seemed like a STEM guy trying his hand at literature. The “fuck the war, they were in love” or whatever was nice too. All the other passages I remember seen try hard

I remember a bunch of parts but nothing that sticks coherently. The stages octopus attack, the pedo scene on the ship and the girl hanging, slothtrop being chased, fucking and escaping out a window where tourists or rich people were hanging out, the banana guy, the dog that talks to the man walking with a toilet on his foot, the villain putting the guy in a rocket for the finale, the black men who worshipped the rocket, their leader being a half brother to some guy whose name started with Tc…, the adenoid, slothtrop disintegrating, Dillinger etc. I remember a lot of little shit, but nothing that I found profound, entertaining, or makes me want to reread it

Pointsman is a pavlovian. He was interested in Slothrop's reverse conditioning

>Why does Pointsman think Slothrop is a monster
Pointsman is an asshole who only cares about his experiments, it might be dramatic irony. There is also the reverse causality, it would be silly to suppose no bombs would drop without Slothrop's presence but he might be blaming him for the bombs. There is also Slothrop's history, which might be repugnant to Pointsman. I think the passage should be read ironically though.
