Assassin's Price, Imager Portfolio #11 - L.E. Modesitt Jr. (2017)

Six more years have passed. For the first time in the series the protagonist isn't an imager. They're still important to the narrative, but this is almost entirely about the dysfunction of the government and how it's reformed. That'll probably be the theme of the final book as well. There are several plot threads that are introduced and developed, but seem they won't have any payoff until the next and final book.

At first I didn't like Charyn, but by the end I came to think that he may be the best protagonist in the series. The love interest in this may have been the best, it was at least the most interesting. That may be because in some ways he has to struggle the most within his limitations and there aren't any easy solutions and almost none that could be solved by brute force.

I felt similarly about the book as a whole by the end, which surprised me. It's definitely one of the best of the series for me and I don't know what to think about that. This one doesn't have any large scale conflict unlike several of the books. It really is just about the government collapsing upon itself and what can be done about that.

I'm surprised the government even functioned at all considering how much corruption, incompetence, malfeasance, and unreasonableness was involved. As noted by the title, there are many assassination attempts, to the point where few want to be involved with anyone who may be the leader because he may well soon be dead.

The four powers are the Rex, who has a rather weak and overall ineffective central government, the Factors' Council which demands the government do everything while wanting to pay nothing, the High Council representing the aristocracy which still resents not being 1,500+ independent fiefdoms, and the Collegium of Imagers which acts as a failsafe. The interactions between the four were quite interesting for me to read.

This is a critical juncture for every aspect of their society, which makes for a rather tumultuous time. Trade becomes every more important and there are a number of scenes involving the commodity exchange. As in the third book of the series, water rights make a return. There's even talk of standard coinage. As always, the seemingly intractable circumstances of taxation must be wrangled with, this time with the introduction of a progressive tax.

The series overall is just fun to read. This is the penultimate book, which after this eleventh book is both relieving and mildly disappointing. I would have liked one more subseries that takes place after the first trilogy, but it doesn't seem that's to be. I would have also preferred the series overall to be more like this book. I didn't enjoy the wars as much as I thought I might, though I did expect to have liked the rest more by comparison.

Endgames, Imager Portfolio #12 - L.E. Modesitt Jr. (2019)

The final book of the series began a couple months later. Charyn was the protagonist once again. I may have been simply oblivious, but the bulk of the protagonist's behavior in this is political. In some ways he's little more than a narrative device than to explore political ideals and aside from a few other matters becomes nearly an entirely political being. That also included his courtship, but she was into that. Maybe I didn't notice as much since I was almost entirely in agreement with what he wanted to do, within the context of the world.

The primary subject this time was labor relations. There was a version of the Luddites, which were a labor movement rather than being anti-technology, despite the latter being the dominant narrative. Religious reformation was a secondary subject and had similarities to Martin Luther's ninety-five theses. There's also more and more about tax policy.

Many topics were discussed, some of which were: price controls, water pollution, consumer protection, anti-dumping duty, minimum wage, auditing, tax evasion, news media, child labor, workweek hours, inequality, exploitation, economic violence, industrialization and steam engines. There's considerably more than that, but the ideas involved in several of these are oft repeated, the repetitiveness of which I noticed more this time. Issues are rarely solved the first time they are discussed though.

I greatly appreciated the epilogue as it was the kind I preferred at the end of a series. Overall this was an enjoyable series, though it certainly had times where I found it lacking. Its primary purpose was to be a fun read, though these last two books changed that somewhat to be very more about exploration of ideas relative to the series of the whole. I would've preferred it if the entire series was more similar to them.

This has ready been discussed a few threads ago. It's one of the biggest plot holes I find with Second Apocalypse (bearing in mind i have only read the first trilogy). Why weren't the Dûnyain a world power, instead of being in a secluded monastery-fortress? You would are just as evil and deceptive as Kellhus, and look at one man's influence on the entire world, imagine an entire race's influence on the world.

Be sure to read the Wizard as well, they aren't really separate books, they're two integral parts of the same story, sort of like how you can't really read Fellowship of the Ring without The Two Towers or Return of the King
I was a tad disappointed with the Wizard Knight in general, though Gene Wolfe is a compelling writer, I'm not particularly interesting in picking up anything else he's done after this. WK was still a solid 7/10, probably an 8/10.

8.5 at best, and that's with a high IQ. I already appreciate the Arthurian, Biblical, Grimm-collative, Robin-Hood-Balladical, and Germanic (i.e. Norse) allusions in The Wizard Knight, but the whole thing is simply not handled in as entertaining a fashion as it ought to have been, and the pacing is very poor, especially at the end when basically the entire actuation of the plot's raison d'etre occurs in the span of five pages. Wolfe may have produced a beautiful story, but he didn't stick the landing, which of course is always the hardest achievement. I expected better from an author who had been plying his trade for 30 years before writing this book, but I was pleased that I bought it and read it.

You're only on The Knight, right? 3/4 of the next book is spent retreading the last half of The Knight; you know, the whole business of the Giant King in Jotunheim and trying to ally their kingdom with King Arthu- I mean King Arnthor? Now the attempt to gain the giants' alliance (which is in actuality a spiritual quest to redeem the souls of the Nephilim/Enakim back to the will of the Most High God, which is of course a reference to Hebrew Elohim/Adonai/Sabaoth, but enough of that) is the primary personal conflict of the novel and therefore understandable that a lot of time is devoted to it. But that's finally solved after much mucking about but the conflict abruptly changes to something completely unforeseen and unattached to what you thought was going to be the point of the story in the last 50 pages. So it slows down to a glacial pace for about 600 pages then speeds along to wrap everything up in the blink of an eye. That said, the parts involving the appearance of Satan- I mean Suttungr- I mean Seth- I mean Setr are always welcome.

I've only read The Wizard Knight and the first Dune novel, so I don't have a huge knowledge of their overall writing styles, but based on those two books I'd personally rank them pretty much exactly the same level of quality and enjoyment. Herbert might edge out Wolfe by a hair, but that's a purely subjective gut response, I couldn't justify my reasoning for it.

Are women capable of writing sff that does not focus (ot have none at all) on feelings, close relationships and sex? Can they write a character and story that is not motivated by any of those things but something like cold logic or some some type of obsession or conviction like greed, religion/belief, duty etc basically something that has nothing to do with other people on personal level?

>> No.20561120

>>20561051
yeah that's basically what Tanith Lee is all about
The Birthgrave is about a cold apathetic alien master race demigod woman who everybody wants to fuck but she feels basically nothing for anybody because they are all literal barbarian untermenschen (not even real humans); the only thing she cares about is overcoming this post-hypnotic suggestion that gave her amnesia, so she wants to find out who and what she is and this is only unveiled at the end of the story
There's also Madeleine l'Engle, who wrote a variety of SF/fantasy fiction, most famously the Wrinkle in Time series which, given that it's overt Christian apologetics, is not at all focused on erotic or selfish love, but is obviously going to be centered around empathy.
I read a portal fantasy by Holly Lisle called "Minerva Wakes", in which the protagonist - a woman with a cheating husband she hates - enters a fantasy world that wants her power because she's a chosen one, but she doesn't give a single fuck about any of the fantasy world characters' problems because they kidnapped her kids to lure her there so she tells them to fuck off and kills them whenever they get in the way between her and her mission to rescue her children.
Mercedes Lackey's Obsidian Trilogy is nice, a bit underwhelming, and largely conventional, but overall a well-crafted epic-fantasy setting. Bears great resemblance to Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series, but vastly better in almost every way.

I think that's all the female authors' I've read that do fantasy, at least the one's whose books I didn't immediately throw away after reading.

Second book in pic related series. I red the Magician trilogy by Raymond Feist and it got me in the mood for 70s-80s fantasy. You know, stuff that was written before everything tried to be ASOIAF and started talking about shit and piss every other sentence. It's okay, but I preferred Magician.

If that's too much, here's an overview of all 12 books:
Subseries 1: An explanation of what Imagers are, focused on the daily life of a guy discovering that he is one and his training to be one over the course of some years. First book is magic school, second is the justice system, and third is more about the government. The protagonist doesn't overly mind murdering those who cause him problems.

Subseries 2: Several 100s of years in the past. An Imager wants to have his ruler conquer the entire continent so that Imagers have a place to live without being persecuted. He doesn't care how many have to die to achieve this or what has to be sacrificed. His personal body count by the end of the series is exceedingly high, though it's mostly from a few climatic scenes. The latter books are almost entirely war.

Subseries 3: 100s of years after subseries 2. The Imagers and society must be reformed and the protagonist has no qualms about murdering whomever he needs to do accomplish that. Civil War happens. That's the first two books. The latter two books are posted in this thread and are about reforming the government and ruling.

Urshurak if you can find it, but it is a bit shallow
Belgariad/Malloreon and Elenium/Tamuli by David Eddings certainly, those sound right up your alley
Stephen Lawhead is more 80s-90s but I'd never call him GRRM-adjacent
Are you a fan of Star Wars? A lot of their EU books have that vibe but they're science fiction of course
Gordon R. Dickson's Dragon Knight series might interest you, though it's rather low-stakes and light-hearted, nothing like Memory Sorrow Thorn

I didn't really see it as edgy, except maybe somewhat the first subseries. I wrote my thoughts about that. It does somewhat contrast with the rest. As for the second, that depends on how you feel about war I suppose. Is carpet bombing edgy or nuking Japan? Basically a lot of people dying all at once. Stuff like that. For the last and somewhat the first, is the CIA/FBI edgy? Maybe, I guess it depends.

Having read entire Dune series and Books of New and Long Sun, I can only say I greatly prefer Wolfe's writing style. His greatest advantage over Herbert is that he wrote his series in a bulk. There are many years between first four Dune books, so Herbert's style is all over the place. Sadly, only the last two novels actually feel like they go hand in hand. On the other hand, Herbert makes all of his characters' intentions clear. Wolfe's narration is focused only on his protagonists' point of view, so his readers have to come to many conclusions by themselves.
My favorite Dune books were Messiah and God Emperor not because they were so good, but because they left me wanting for more. Wolfe's Book of the New Sun delivered everything I wanted from Dune and much more.
