Six years ago I had a poetry collection published: a small, 120 page paperback, by a desirable large’ish ‘brand’ , we take half your profits, publisher. Since then I had a few poems in Granta, Poetry magazine and NYRB, and i’v been think of putting out another collection.

The Publisher claims ‘300 bookstores;, and did get me a few interviews, but the overall effect was just shy under 8 thousand copies , and thats with online sales.

A pittance. Poetry is unpopular, I get it, fine. But then it’s not worth the hassle. Now im thinking of how to go about self publishing, and finding an online presence. I can make a twitter account, but what then ? … IDK. Guess im just looking for some new platform, where there is opportunity.

I been thinking about tattoos as I kinda tolerate the ones where you belong to somekind of subculture (soldiers, bikers, gangs or tribes) or hide nasty scars like cutting tits due to cancer or chemical burns. Its so strange to see when nerdy guys ink themselves with tattoos.

>> No.20558887 [DELETED]

>>20558798

I don't think it's autism that you don't understand it. I never understood tattoos because I had an instinct that the human body was sacred in some way, and shouldn't be altered like that.

When my life was going downhill, however, that's when I started considering tattoos, because I felt like imprinting something on me would help solidify my identity in some way. When I was younger, my identity was far more stable.

Now that I'm out of that period, and thankfully un-tatted, my sense of self-identity is stable enough to not even consider tattoos anymore.

I agree. They are fine as continuation of tradition and a sign of shared group identity. But it's silly when people have no identity beyond consumerism and then demonstrate that with their pop-culture tattoos. My mom divorced my father some years ago because she was in love with another man or some shit like that, she told my father and they broke up. My mother never told me about that man (she probably realized that I know what happened and the real reason for the divorce) but my father did. Now, my mom wants to go in vacation with me but she keeps talking on the phone with someone about this trip as if it will go with us and I have the impression that it's her bf (for which he divorced my father), of which I theoretically don't know about (yet) and I have the impression that he will come with us. What should I do? She didn't tell me anything about this yet so I can't tell her right now that I will not go but I swear that if that guy is coming I will not accept this, it makes me feel like a cuck for my father. I am already nervously shaking and I feel like punching someone in the face. What do you think about this very uncomfortable situation?

>> No.20559190

Unfortunately to keep a woman you have to engage in a lifelong romance to keep her satisfied, that's just their nature. Something like 72% of women when surveyed admit falling in love with the person they've had an affair with because their reasons for seeking out another person when they are already in a relationship are very different from a man's(emotional comfort vs physical comfort). I don't know how old you are but the fact that your parents never sat you down and talked to you about the situation is fucked up and normal cowardly woman behavior.

Me and my ex divorced some years ago for similar reasons. My initiative, and my fault, but after a few unhappy years i did simply meet someone else. There were other problems, obviously, but who knows what we could have done with it had I chosen to give it another go.

And there were kids involved. In the end you can only hope that they forgive you. A loveless marriage is one thing, but knowing there is someone else who loves you makes it difficult to maintain.

You only have 3 options.
1) don’t go and avoid it altogether but it will come back eventually
2) go and risk having it sprung on you which I wouldn’t be happy about personally
3) ask your mother if it will just be the two of you and if she asks why you ask explain you overheard her on the phone and it sounded like she was inviting someone else so in other words be honest and direct
Personally, I would recommend 3. When I was a teenager, my mom did the same thing. She ended up inviting the new man to holiday dinner, which was extremely awkward and bizarre and we ended up leaving before we ever even had dinner. Had I known about it before hand I would’ve confronted her.

>> No.20559219

>>20559211
I wouldn’t personally. You have no choice but to let your mom date who she wants but you don’t have to spend time with them or vacation together like a happy family. That’s what your mom is trying to do probably. I mean, she means well. But modern women are just like that. Idk how old you are but if you’re a teenager I wouldn’t be surprised if she starts trying to turn you against your dad too so be on guard for that. I fell for it. I lost 11 years with my father that I will never get back.

If you have siblings you should care about them. Otherwise, you’re totally right. Welcome to the cruel reality of modern women and parents.

I went through something similar myself. I did have that break phase. I didn’t see my father for 11 years. I barely saw my siblings. I regret both of those but I don’t regret maintaining some distance. There will probably come a day where your parents are aging, more helpless than before and you’ll want to close the distance but until then you’re a young man and you should forge off on your own.

That's not too shabby for a book of poetry; and what you describe overall reflects quite an achievement. Few poets can make a living from their art, hence they teach.

>I can make a twitter account, but what then ? … IDK. Guess im just looking for some new platform, where there is opportunity.

no but it's something i might have to do. I used to write a blog in my teenage years (may god preserve me that no one ever connects it with my name) and 16K hits was about average. 8k for years of work feels like nothing. I had more satisfaction from a small private printing i did for my friends. I even commissioned art in an old woodcut style, it was great.

i dont want to 'be a poet', i want to be read. Putting out a book in hopes that i'll be discovered feels pissing in the wind. a) no one reads new poetry. b) there are no critics anymore. What got me attention last time were the interviews i did for tin house and southern review.

In the long run there i less indignity in being your own publicist, then dancing to other peoples out of date tune.

Sometimes I fear about my faith in the Buddha and his practices. How legitimate it is for some european guy who's still catholic on paper to call himself a buddhist.

I perform the rites as best as I can on my own, try to see the world through a lens of the teachings and by this point it's simply how I see things, an effortless way of understanding, the default.

That's what faith is about I suppose. To hold on even in doubt. Sometimes I wish I had someone around me I could talk to about this. Talking to my asian friend might be a possibility but she isn't all too fond of her original country.

I have a bunch of artwork from a friend that I don't speak to much anymore. At first I stopped communicating because I was trying to quit coke and alcohol and they were a big part of that time of my life. The longer I stayed sober the more my general anxiety came back which causes me to isolate and not speak to anyone.

I love their art, and still like to see it on my walls, but lately it's been making me feel guilty about having it around while I don't speak to them, and at times it makes miss them, but I'm so fucked mentally that reaching out to anyone becomes very difficult.

I was about to go to the store to get a frame for a piece I've had sitting in my closet for a year, but I feel weird about hanging another one of their paintings when I haven't talked to them since they gave it to me.

You know why? Because I made the brilliant decision of focusing on the uni course and on my portfolio instead of applying for internships early on. Now no internship will have me, since I’m almost graduating, and the senior jobs wont hire a fucker with zero experience.
Meanwhile, my colleagues who had the incredible boom of not being retarded went hunting for jobs early on. No one in the industry cares about an intern’s portfolio or how well versed he’s on the meme theoretical aspects, they just want someone who knows how to use the software and has a few years of studying left.

Abu Huraira reported: A man reviled Abu Bakr while the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was sitting down. That made the Prophet impressed by Abu Bakr and he smiled. Then, Abu Bakr reviled the man with the same words as him and the Prophet became angry and he stood to leave. Abu Bakr went to the Prophet and he said, “O Messenger of Allah, the man reviled me and you were sitting, but when I responded you became angry and stood up.” The Prophet said, “Verily, there was an angel with you responding on your behalf, but Satan appeared when you responded with the same words as him and I will not sit in the presence of Satan.”

There are a shocking number of retards in Afghanistan, literal retards. So many in fact that we had a code name for them during missions - Renegades. During a multi-click infil through the sparsely populated countryside it wasn't unusual for some renegade to be heard howling from the inside of a compound as we strolled by. I just looked up the numbers and the Afghan Health Ministry estimates that 85% of the population suffers from some form of mental disability. We had a lot of code names to categorize the people. Squinters, MAMS, Feathers, Chargers, Crows, Falcons. I swear the Renegades would hear us coming and start barking before the dogs would, they must be light sleepers.

Reading The Lily of the Field and the Bird of the Air.
On the 2nd discourse. Now, I'm known to get filtered so my take might possibly be wrong.
This discourse is pertaining to the verse that says you cannot serve two masters. Roughly put, you cannot be neutral to the Lord. The relationship with him as created to creator is so intimate that if you do not love him then you hate him. Love and hate being opposites the existence of one demands the other in contrast.
God as Creator has his divine will. Scripture says, his will be done. All of Creation does as commanded by God. Existence is therefore defined by necessity.
The measure of man is his commitment to necessity. To love God is to obey, to hate God is to disobey. Sin and disobedience are one and the same. Obedience and disobedience are a measure of love. So the measure of man is his love of necessity. Our ultimate either/or is to love or hate our necessity. Ambivalence is therefore not possible because to be ambivalent is to reject necessity and desire otherwise.

Normally I remember a large portion of my dreams at night but these dreams are rarely preserved in the same way. When I do remember them when I wake up they are very clearly not dreams in the traditional sense, they feel different. They're very clearly coming from a different place than dreams normally do. Most of the time it's a very simple thing, an image or an instant, a few sentences, a scent.

What's common among all of them, remembered or not is that before the event happens I feel it and then immediately recall what it is I am about to encounter. Sometimes it's the instant before, sometimes it's a a few minutes before, sometimes it's hours before. There's no real consistency to the timing, what is consistent is that it happens with way more regularity at night or when I'm fatigued. It's been happening to me since I was a child and I didn't think too much of it until I told my girlfriend when I was 16 and she looked at me like I was unwell.

I explained it away to myself for the longest time but I've had too many experiences where I know what someone is going to say word for word, what they're going to wear or I've gone somewhere I've never been before and remember things about it before I'm there.

My grandmother and mother told me the same thing had always happened to them when I told them about it when I was like 11 and my mother swears that she kept seeing my younger sister as a 9 year old in her dreams when she was pregnant with her. It's just some weird thing that happens to me, I've been thinking about journaling about it.

Native speakers constantly use "ESL" as an insult to people who actually put effort and hard work towards studying.
Yet they only know their own language through absorption, rather than study, and suffer not only shallow and ugly casual usage, but also common mishearing mistakes like "they're/their" and "should of".

We should make "EFL" an insult instead. By any metric they are more worthy of ridicule than us bilingual chads.

I'm 22 years old, and I'm developing a dependence on alcohol. It started in college. At first, I'd drink at parties, then in my dorm when nothing was going on, and eventually I'd drink on nights to cope with the workload. Now that I've graduated and found a job, I drink everyday after work. I can understand that what I'm doing is bad, but for time being, I have not developed any health complications; I know I will if I keep up this lifestyle, but I keep telling myself that I have plenty of time to stop seeing as how I'm still young. How can I put a stop to this bad habit?

I cannot truthfully. I've spent the last four years grinding at college, and to be blunt, I'm burnt out from it and don't feel like exerting any mental effort past what is expected from me. Nothing really interests me anymore. I'll try and read something or go for a run, which do make me feel accomplished, but nothing comes to close to the buzz I get from drinking.

my sister's ex-husband would drink every day and seemed fine but if he went a day without drinking he would have a seizure. binge drinking seems worse because you get bad hangovers and do dumb stuff, but drinking beer every day and night just to "take the edge off" aka self-medicating will fuck your health up bad in the long run

I realized quite recently that I basically have zero interest in making friends. I'm not some asocial autistic shut in or anything, I can pretend to be normal easily enough. maybe it's just the wrong crowd, my social interaction currently consists mostly of coworkers and fellow college students.
But I don't care to "get to know" any of them, I don't care about their interests, I don't want to text and snap and facebook them mindlessly at all hours of the day, I don't want to tell them how it's going or what I've been up to. I find that most people don't have anything interesting to say, nor do they find the things I really want to talk about interesting themselves. every now and then I find there will be someone I can mentally connect with really well, but lately it's been seeming rarer and rarer.

Burn out can be pretty serious. Losing joy in what you once loved is also a terrifying thing I can empathise with. If you can't stop drinking currently I'd suggest just doing what you can (if you aren't already) to treat your body well. I know someone who made very bad decisions, he started out similarly and damaged his body and career etc with his drinking. It really can become serious but it can also be managed. The fact you're aware of it is good. Have you tried branching into new hobbies/interests or are you not feeling up to it currently?

>Native speakers constantly use "ESL" as an insult to people who actually put effort and hard work towards studying.
Wrong. You're right, the small minority of people who have learned a second language should be applauded but you misunderstand why Native Speakers occasionally use "ESL" to insult people. It is used to insult fucktards who are not content with asking their braindead and vacuous questions in their own language, but use their new found gloss to sully an entirely new and broader audience with absolutely awful questions like:
>why come miracles not happen in new day times?
or not even questions, but statements of pure hubris like
>i am enlightened now i see all is one the whole world conciousness am mine
If someone asks a provocative question, but it's rooted in actual reading, few people are going to criticize it over some quirk of syntax. But overwhlemingly the worst questions, the most /x/-tier bullshit seems to come from people who don't speak English as a native language. People who take loaded words like "intelligence","consciousness", "empowerment" and stretch them so broadly semantically as to become utterly meaningless.

But I really don't understand what your fascination is with this is. It's not really applicable to the philosophy.

Or stick a garden gnome up your ass, leaving a phrygian hat of shit on top of his hat. That's disgusting and disrespectful to the owner.

>> No.20564178

Contemplations on the inescapable impersonal crisis of fishing:

Even if one does not wish to be the fisher there is an inescapable binding between oneself and that which can be fished.
Letting the trout swim along without bringing it out from the water by chance denies that the fishing could ever occur.
We know this to not be true as it is perfectly salient in the mind that such a beast could be obtained by pure chance.
Yet we kill this part of ourselves that knows this truth so that the anguish of sitting without trout does not consume us instead.
To live is then to be able to let our lures hang in the water for any unsuspecting animal to come across and not be dissuaded from harnessing our potential.
If there is no water or fish there is still the greater abstraction of one's being that can epitomize this fishing.
Broadly what efforts can be made to allow good fortune to befall oneself by pure chance should be sought so as to not kill one's fishing.

You mean online? Well that's very different to talking. Yes. Make it feel like an interview, that's what I do: I ask her questions that force her to give a answer more than a sentence. Online dating is a lot like online anything: you need to grab her attention. And with that in mind do try and write in a way that conveys you're a passionate person, and when I say "passionate" I mean the way athletes or Spaniards are passionate. Nothing aggressive. Just be fun. Accept that sometimes you will come across as slightly cringe, that's how online dating works man. But slightly cringe but passionate will work way better for you than dry and boring and forgettable. She may even overlook the very mild cringe because she likes your enthusiasm.

Change comes from the Old French 'changier' which means to alter, exchange, or to switch. This meaning is retained in English where we may refer to 'change lanes' or 'change color' which indicates that a subject replaces one state with another.
Progress is used when there is an analogy to be made to walking it comes by Old French originally from the latin 'progressus' which means "to go forward, advance". It shares the root "gradus" (to step) with words Transgress, Ingress, Egress, Congress, Regress, Digress, and Aggression.
In this regard Progress may convey more of a linear variation, while change can refer to something more sudden and discrete.

You're reading what?
But as for your question, I was pretty sure he says that where the mean or balance lies is contextual, for example, more rashness will be necessary in situations where speed and urgency is of the essence, while less will be the desired mean when patience is needed.
Also you just can't conflate this with political ideologies, least of all modern political ideologies, Firstly because there's more than two.
Secondly because a political ideology is not simply a bundle of behaviors. People will try and shoehorn in an anthropamorphic reading of some imagined leftist or rightist and say they display all these excesses and all these deficiencies, but the simple fact is you can't do it because they are fluid policies pertaining to which legislation and executive actions should be taken by the government in the day in accordance with certain fashions.
Simply put, Aristotle was describing how certain traits in individual behaviors in excess are bad, but not enough is bad too. The crucial thing is, individual traits, like appetite, spending money, talking about one's self. These cannot without some poetic license be applied to political ideologies, unless you're trying to stereotype broad voter bases which contain more contradictions than the caricatures would have you believe.
