I've heard "100 years of solitude" is pretty much about it. It's even in the name.

why is Philip Larkin on here?

>> No.20541435

I didn't make this list but I'd guess it's because of Philip Larkin's disenchantment with the modern world, and his description of its loneliness and boredom.

I know you didn't make the list but Confederacy of Dunces really doesn't fit here. It's comical and cheery in its tone compared to the other books on there and at the end Ignatius hooks up with and goes on the run with an equally as crazy Marxist chick.

>> No.20542675

I've never read Confederacy of Dunces, but yeah the r9k reading list is mostly but not completely on loneliness. There's bound to be one where he runs off with some chick.

You could say the same about My Twisted World. It's one of the genuinely funniest books I've ever read. The tone of sincere, offended hubris and sense of comic timing are unmatched.

Here's a question, is there a good book about loneliness that isn't coupled with severe mental illness? Tired of reading about a lonely isolated person and it always turns out it's because they're mentally ill. That's fine, but it feels like every fucking book I've read is about that. Sometimes circumstances lead people to loneliness. Or simply a lack of initiative.

Anything you can quote?

>> No.20543995

>>20543932
MTW is unintentionally hilarious, and yeah now that you mention it some episodes in it could have come straight out of Confederacy of Dunces (him getting literally thrown out of a party, breaking his leg from the fall, and hobbling back because he realized he forgot his designer glasses only to get kicked out again, glassesless).
But it's got no literary merit on its own

i only skimmed it but i don't think he ever actually talked to a woman in the entire book. i think writing a book about loneliness but then never having the protagonist actually talk to a woman is something a "literary" author would try in order to make a point, but he just did it naturally.
