think of it like Laius, who is told by oracle that his own son will slay him, so to prevent that he sets about trying to secure the death of his infant son, thus laying the groundwork for his son Oedipus to slay him in the future.

That by trying to change the future you have now secured the very future you wished to avoid, as if the Fates knew beforehand exactly how you'd react when being told a prophecy (that you'd even seek out a prophecy in the first place). Basically the idea that 4th/5th+ dimensional beings exist.
