Whats the point of reading philosophy?

>> No.20462401

There is no point unless you're male and of European ancestry. The sensuous races and rice calculators of the world can only do "practical" philosophy (ethics), and women can't do anything.

It's interesting. Ancient wisdom. I feel a sense of adventure when I open a book written 2000 years ago. I like seeing how my ancestors thought about the world. I like seeing that nothing is changing. I find solace in the knowledge of our relatedness.

977. Difference between IQ and intelligence. IQ is not intelligence any more than a strong engine is a fast car. You can put the strongest engine in the world inside a fridge and it won't go anywhere. A high IQ is like a good tool; no matter how good it may be, it can only be put to the use that its owner desires. Weak men or women will use their IQ in petty stupid shit no matter how high it may be. They'll spend all its horsepower on inventing rationalizations for their fears and failures and neuroses than on actually inventing anything. That's why balls are inextricable from intelligence. That's why the history of philosophy is a history of the thoughts of straight white males (with a brief East Asian interlude back when East Asians still had a decent amount of balls).

Same, on two different levels. Reading his philosophy enriched my life, and reading his On Women when I was young made me at least countenance the possibility of misogyny being a valid position, which stopped me from developing any further into a simp.

I think a lot of simps are conditioned at a level that would take years to reach and remedy with therapy. It's "fun" for them to defend women as a kneejerk reflex. The fact that extreme misogyny is equally stupid gives them an opening to brand all misogyny or even incipient misogyny as extreme misogyny, thus justifying unleashing their full simp power level.

You need to get some nuance in there, early on, so you can make your own informed decisions as you mature about how much misogyny is necessary and useful for life. It's good to have a healthy love-hate relationship with anything substantially different from you.

Basically this.
Philosophy is only good for harming stupidity and critiquing what our world is up to. Both of which are basically either self harm or deriving pleasure from hurting others. Good people don't practice philosophy, they don't read it. Philosophy is for theifs, thugs and evil doers. Not once has reading philosophy produced anything but a villain. Manuals on how to commit crime, that's what philosophy books are. Tomes to make you a better falsifier. Best avoid that stuff all together op. We wouldn't want you to hurt someone, least of all yourself.

Reading philosophy is gay, listening to audiobooks is based and chad. The metaphysical properties of combining philosophical wisdom while performing daily tasks and not just sitting down reading a book like a weak loser are immense. Go for a really long drive late at night for a few hours listening to Being and Nothingness by Sartre and you will be riveted and enthused the entire time you are driving. You can never stop.

The value of philosophy is to be sought largely in its very uncertainty. The man who has no tincture of philosophy goes through life imprisoned in the prejudices derived from common sense, from the habitual beliefs of his age or his nation, and from convictions which have grown up in his mind without the co-operation or consent of his deliberate reason. To such a man the world tends to become definite, finite, obvious; common objects rouse no questions, and unfamiliar possibilities are contemptuously rejected. As soon as we begin to philosophise, on the contrary, we find that even the most everyday things lead to problems to which only very incomplete answers can be given. Philosophy, though unable to tell us with certainty what is the true answer to the doubts which it raises, is able to suggest many possibilities which enlarge our thoughts and free them from the tyranny of custom. Thus, while diminishing our feeling of certainty as to what things are, it greatly increases our knowledge as to what they may be; it removes the somewhat arrogant dogmatism of those who have never travelled into the region of liberating doubt, and it keeps alive our sense of wonder by showing familiar things in an unfamiliar aspect.

There is nothing in life that is not a waste of time except for acquiring the means for shelter and nourishment.
Anything beyond living in a wood shack and eating wild berries, nuts, and insects is unnecessary luxury.

>critiquing what our world is up to
I like this phrasing.

I think the point to reading philosophy is probably personal for each person. I like it more from a "history of ideas" perspective - I find it very interesting to read how various people through the ages thought the world was like, how we should organize ourselves, how we should act, etc etc. Beyond that, philosophy helps me cut through bullshit. for me, it's the Greeks. shit you can start there and end there.
