Such a lazy reaction to criticize Aurelius for being a philosophic emperor like it is some kind of insult. Would you prefer Caligula? Besides, if you want some juxtaposition read Epictetus, an actual Stoic philosopher and teacher who also happened to be a crippled slave. If I hadn't already had innate stoic tendencies that have been reinforced by philosophy the constant misinterpretation of stoicism whop bother me a lot.

Mental diseases are real, so it is useless to repeat to ourselves that our thoughts are completely under our control.
As a corollary, it is useless to say that one can always find peace in one's mind, whatever the circumstances.
It is hard to believe in Providence.
Those are some contentions I have against stoic thinking. But I do agree that letting go of what you can't control is a freeing and wise action, that it is possible to be content under most circumstances. Most, not all. Whining never made anything better. But pain is real.

He has to constantly remind himself that his suffering and all of his emotions are not real, at best he's emotionless, not happy. Also, he has trouble getting out of bed and feels unmotivated. Sounds like depression to me, which is understandable given his circumstances. He also seems to be dealing quite well with all of his problems, but he definitely doesn't sound happy to me.

He was probably happier than you, because he lived a life rejoicing in virtue, while you (I'm assuming) are a vulgar hedonist - in the modern sense - who deems happiness I'm sure to be something like relaxing and experiencing your hecking favourite media, or following the trail of your material ambitions, or passionate revelry, or any number of sordid things

>> No.20456177

>>20456125
Happiness is indeed difficult to define. If it wasn't, everyone would be happy. But for me it means experiencing greatness - whether looking at a fine piece of art, admiring nature, or reaching a worthwhile goal after hardships. I think I differ from hedonism in that I don't think that good feelings are the end goal or the only thing having value in themselves - every action should also serve others.

Also, I'm not saying that virtue is not the highest good, but I disagree with the view of the later Stoa that virtue is the *only* good. If it was, altruism paradoxically ceases to be a virtue. If virtue was the only good, we could only serve others by giving them opportunities to act virtuous according to the Stoa, i.e. plunge them into hardships. E.g. feeding the poor would lose all meaning, because we're not really helping them (after all food doesn't do anything for their souls and death isn't bad).

So as you can see, I don't disagree with Stoic virtue at all. Their four cardinal virtues are very good, and if anything the list is incomplete. I just don't think that apatheia equals happiness and therefore, I don't think that following the later Stoa can bring happiness either to you, to your loved ones, or to society.

I largely agree and think your statement to be very reasonable, but it's not necessarily true that virtue requires hardship to manifest itself, virtue does not change relative to external conditions. It only takes different actions, but the Good remains whole whether in peace or war, reason takes different faces but its essence remains the same.

With regard to the altruism of feeding the poor, I think indeed you are not doing them any true Good - the only way you could perhaps do that is by working to free their soul from bondage (as you are trying to do with your own) - but you can still prefer that the poor not starve, if it's in your power. So not everything need be a pure virtue that you do of course (otherwise one would stop eating, drinking and allow the body to die from a lack of care), as long as it does not fall to the opposite such things can be preferential indifferents and can be done even if you do not recognise them as being of any true Good.
