>You fucking asshole low level fights are the best part.

Azarinth Healer starts when the MC goes to the caves near the city. Until then it's barely readable, and that's with a rewrite that the early chapters had gotten at some point. Then Illea, the main character, starts fighting for real and the story shows its claws.

By the way, Azarinth Healer may be the most fascinating webnovel ever written. It's bad. Like, writing is genuinely bad, and the world-building for the first few hundred chapters is not just uninspired, but not even original as the author shamelessly inserted things from popular games without restrain (straight up adding Dwemer's lost civilization from Elder Scrolls, with only the name changed, probably the most shameless thing I've ever seen).

And you know what? It's the most purely enjoyable webnovel I've read. Royalroad's darling, one of the most successful stories on Patreon, with 3.750 patrons at its peak, most paying 15$. The amount of raw, unpolished joy this power progression story gives is staggering. No other story has such a good balance of LitRPG numbers, actions and progress. This webnovel is the definition of 'Guilty Pleasure.' I drop webnovels left and right for any offense, but AH I've been reading for years. To make it funnier, the author hasn't improved a lot, the writing still reads kinda horrible.

But the story? It's pure adventure. Like a singleplayer Open World RPG game, but as a story. Any aspiring writer should study Azarinth Healer to discover how to write something that succeeds in spite of all its flaws solely due to how damn FUN it is.

By the way, the irony of the most juicy popcorn power fantasy LitRPG having a Female Main Character is hilarious beyond belief. I remember having mad amount of respect years ago for the author when he wrote the character having sex with a MAN. It might sound silly, but a lead female character having straight (well, Illea is bisexual, but whatever) sex is a big no-no, people literally can't bear it and drop webnovels over it, even curse the authors. That's why every lead is male or at most female lesbian.

You are right. That is a very good example of bad prose.
>while looking away shyly
A good trick for better, more concise and precise prose is to avoid +ing verbs and adverbs. If you need an adverb to modify the verb, you are using the wrong verb.
>She averted her gaze and giggled.
Now that's better but even that could be improved. Perhaps another verb in place of giggle might be titter.
>Tittering, she averted her gaze.
>Giggling, she looked away.
>She shied away and giggled.

Has anyone here read the unofficial novelization of Planescape:Torment? Supposedly it's pretty good, some guy worked for years to make a coherent thing and translate it into a novel, then it has another better edition. In the name of Bakker and all that is supreme, I will not capitulate, the pozzed may rage, and they may scream, but ruling supreme is my fate. The hordes of pozzed can be loud, but the supreme will always be proud, they will fight the pozzed crowd, disrespecting Bakker is never allowed. the truth will always shine, that sandi is nothing but a swine, his fans are the biggest fools, he is fat with a mouth that drools. let it be known, that Bakker sits at the throne, I will defend him with words or stone, with an army or alone, he will never be dethroned.

I'm currently reading Mother of Learning and I'm onto the third arc. I feel like a lot of the second arc was a bit filler-y, so I'm at least happy it feels like the third arc has a clear goal and push towards fulfilling it. First arc as learning stuff and finding his place in the loop, second arc was like 80% futzing about until he finally decided to talk to Zach and suddenly the plot actually happened. Zorian continues to be JUST mildly frustrating enough that I wanna see him improve, and he kind of does improve, it's clear he values his sister and some of his friends a lot more than he used to, and he's actually trusting people instead of just being paranoid as fuck and avoiding Zach all the time forever.

It's not "good" in the sense that it's erotic, or honestly a positive event in-universe, but there's a subtle "fade-to-black" early on in "The Stars My Destination" that illustrates a scene of the protagonist viciously raping a harmless schoolteacher who had befriended him, and it's one of the most sublimely written and terrifying depictions of rape I've ever read, despite the fact that it's technically only implied and not graphically described, owing to 1950s sensibilities. It honestly blows any other insinuation or description of sex in a novel I've ever read out of the water, at least insofar as its well-written, though as I said, it's hardly something I could wank to, and there is plenty of far better erotic literature out there than Alfred Bester.

I've been binging Beware of Chicken for the past 2 days after blazing through the ebook version of vol1. I have not read any chinese xianxia so take this in mind, but I think I've gotten the gist of most things from context

Volume 1 was good and actually surprisingly competently written, although that benefits from the ebook version being an edited version of the serial. It's occasionally actually funny, has decent prose, and if not for some foreshadowing to the latter material and the epilogue with the Earth spirit shit would be fine as a standalone, which is a tell for the generally good pacing and structure

Volume 2 feels like it really falls apart in many of these things by comparison. It almost completely drops the comedy angle. The Lu Ban plotline moves at a glacial pace. Vajra and really most of the Xong brothers' plotlines could be almost entirely cut without changing much of anything. Unlike vol 1 which could still make a lot of hay from the passing of the seasons and Jin just getting ready for his wedding there's no clear direction the story is going towards other than the tournament arc, which takes way too long and is preceded by stuff completely unrelated to it. The disciples collectively get so much screen time that the few chapters where we still get Jin's POV, which is mostly his perspective on other character's plotlines or him reverse engineering a foodstuff or farm implement from his original world, start to feel like filler. The longer he keeps the secret it gets more and more jarring that everyone thinks Jin is some eccentric cultivation genius with an inexhaustible pool of wisdom when he's really just some Overlord canadian asshole winging it through everything, while a bunch of his disciples are completely unironic kung fu dudes who get in unironic kung fu storylines, particularly since there's rarely any attempt to make it funny anymore

standalones are very solid. first one (Best Served Cold) is a revenge/heist thriller (it's pretty good, altho the protag is annoying to me), the second (Heroes) is a war novel and is imo Abercrombie's best work, the third (Red Country) is a western a la Unforgiven (this one is universally considered Abercrombie's worst). then there's also a short story collection (Sharp Ends), which was middling, but had a couple of moments, and the second trilogy, which wasn't that good, but is worth reading if you like Abercrombie

He is stuck in a 19 year old body and has urges. I didn't entirely connect with this 19 year old body being distracted by sexual urges and exploring.
So another afraid being around people, 19 year old meets woman and sexual urges.
I am so sick and tired if this. Does no one write scifi/fantasy that has a normal mc who is not afraid of people and there is no sex, no urges, no romance. Is everything coomer these days? >Highly interesting, love me some time travel stories, what you got for me?
>It's all trashy romances for women

Holy shit, is there an option on Goodreads to sort against romance stories? It really feels as if the entire site catered to a middle-aged woman who wants some hard dicking by a myserious man. Like, I looked at the top books from time travel category and the first was 'Outlander.' And then I saw something like this: https://www.goodreads.com/questions/191922-why-are-people-saying-outlander-is-a-rape

I've never thought I'd see women unironically using 'The old times were like that, it's realistic!' rethoric that edgy guys are prosecuted for 24/7. Literally no difference. It's baffling to me how open women are about this, harem stories for men are popular to some degree, but I NEVER saw anything resembling serious rape or sexual assault in them, the authors are scared to put something like that to not be cancelled. Meanwhile women straight up publish books about women being raped and then liking it, books that become instant best-sellers. Is the situation on the market truly this bad?

Downloaded this on a whim when I was going through new releases, it was by far the one I was least interested it but it's turned out to be really fucking good and the best of the lot.
Urban Fantasy but it's set up like an Alfred Bester sci-fi in that it introduces you to the concept (shadow magic has been revealed to the world fairly recently) and then uses that to explore a story about it.
The protagonist is rare for urban fantasy because they're not magically powerful, they're not solving a detective mystery plot and they start off in a relationship instead of having a will they won't they being the big subplot. Think the author does a real good job of writing a character who has specific competencies but is still a fuckup in a completely believable way.
Big recommend, the plot even ties up incredibly nicely whilst still giving you a sequel hook.

Well, there's lots to add. It's just that being that consistent over eight volumes is more rare than any other part of it. It's a litrpg where the powers of Earth have been introduced to The Game That Bends Reality, a shared virtual reality among all galactic species where they fight for advantage in ways that mesh meaningfully with our reality.

Our hero can't play by the Man's rules and breaks out of the nation vs. bloc rules the other earthly participants are engaged in and breaks out on to the galactic stage to become a playa. Like with lots of Russian litrpg, approaching, engaging, and superseding entrenched players on each level is the real game. Local group, national group, planetary group, local interstellar group, pan galactic group, enemy group, allied group it's the same but different. You're always somebody else's playing piece, and they yours.

I like that kind of gameplay in a book, where each faction has its own motivation and style, and there are no permanent allies and no permanent enemies. You've seen all of these elements employed before, but in this series there's always one of them played strong enough to tilt it to a 4 instead of a 3. And I think it's the same with the rest of this author's works. Latest was a tie in with another series that got retconned into this one, but in a fun way. And that original series was all 4s too.

It's still enjoyale to read and I love the pure slice of life parts, but it's getting a bit tiring

I find that if I view it like a big tub of popcorn that I eat while engaged with something else, it's just great. I'll just keep eating another scoop until it's empty If I demand it take center stage it wilts under the lights.

That's unrealistic. Goodreads has 3 gender options. Male, female, "custom." Being able to filter users by these options is a realistic and reasonable request.

I'm unironically in favor of content warnings (or "trigger warnings" as the fags call them) and if the fags get to have them for sexism, homophobia and whatnot, then I want them for feminism, gay agenda, etc.

agreed. most of this site is shit but there is absolute gold in the mix, you just have to dig for it. I wouldn't have found Bakker without you guys and well... I think the Second Apocalypse series, barring The Judging Eye, is absolutely fantastic. there is also no other place I can talk about hard sci-fi which I love about as much as my parents

Bugger off, disingenuous faggot. Ironically enough, liberals are much closer to creating such institutions than conservatives are in the US, given their push for "hate speech" laws.

I for one am content to watch the world burn around me as long as I can maintain a little corner for myself where the flames won't reach. I have no hope for a better tomorrow. There is no point for me to try convince anyone of anything. Things will only ever get worse. All I desire is sufficient pleasant reading material to distract myself from the hellish firestorm outside.

You should be able to skip around, not all that much happening in one story line impacts others. If there's not a reading guide on how to do this you should make one.

idk, I like it. I don't like all of it but I like enough of it and I really like some of it. I read a LOT though and have a hard time finding content I find readable.

Reading dungeon crawler carl rn, read all of trick of the night earlier today. I average about 1000 pages a day.
