Christ in Islam is necessarily a failure. Even though he's called a "great prophet", his teaching evidently became so distorted that it ended up reaching nobody. Nobody in the lineage of the Early Christians was Islamic in any way. All the Early Christian sects believed in Christ's divinity and/or crucifixion. The closest Muslims have to them is the Ebionite sect, who denied Christ's divinity, but these denied the virgin birth and affirmed the crucifixion also. They were Jews who wanted to observe the Mosaic Law and viewed Jesus as just another prophet. They died out within a few hundred years of Christ's death.

This has always been my problem with the Islamic conception of Christ. It is all well and good to offer lip service and call him a great prophet, but why did God not preserve his teachings in the first place?

I don't understand how anyone can look at the Jesus of the Qur'an and the Jesus of the Bible and not be pulled away from the former towards the latter. The Jesus of the Bible is so rich in personality, so astounding in teaching, and so extraordinary in his accomplishments, but the Jesus of the Qur'an just lamely insists on resolving a doctrinal dispute in the favor of Muslims.

To anyone wondering about Jesus' character, I suggest you read the farewell to the disciples in John or the passion in Mark.
