Bullshit medical fads don't change the fact that they exist. Here, let me tell you what my favorite ADHD memory is: When I was still in school, I used to sit in front of my homework and cry, because I wanted to do it, but no matter what I did, I just couldn't focus. You can't even imagine what kind of frustration and despair that is. It's shame and embarrassment. Forgetting things, struggling with stuff that everyone around you thinks is simple. On really bad days, I can barely hold a coherent conversation, because I keep losing my train of thought.

Ah, to be young again. I remember when I was this precise brand of stupid. I knew in the back of my mind that the world was so overwhelmingly complex that I could never hope to comprehend it in its entirety. Naturally, for someone like me, that was terrifying. At a certain point, you kind of just wake up from adolescence to a world that's a teeming and seething maelstrom with an autonomy to it that's so incredibly intimidating. It was my solution as well to convince myself that Complex Thing was actually just Simple Thing. Fabricate some flimsy beliefs, such that I can logically retreat to dumb generalizations:
>mental illness is just an excuse for laziness
>women are all whores
>the image is the reality
>the jews did it
But as you get older, the world doesn't seem so frightening anymore. It only keeps getting more and more complex, the more you learn about it, but you make your peace with it. The idea that maybe some people with mental illness aren't actually lazy becomes more acceptable, because you start learning that these adolescent dichotomies in which everything is all black or all white, well, they really just don't correspond with reality. You'll gather the evidence eventually, fren. It just takes time.

I've noticed I struggle to read large blocks of text and I think this would help me massively. I'm a few months away from obtaining a pharmacy degree in my second language, so I'm not a dumbass either. It would also help the letters stop flipping around mentally (I don't think I'm dyslexic but when I'm tired I do notice that some words get mixed up). It's of course dumb to you if you have never struggled but for someone like me it'd possibly be a huge help.

The real reason this bionic reading stuff works may have to do with attention oscillation that creates a nice rhythm that's less straining on the brain by splitting the load between the high-attention part and the low attention part. This is slightly unrelated to the actual OP, but I think I might be on the autism scale. I can socialize perfectly normally if still a little on the quiet side, but my preference is basically for zero socialization. I can tolerate one on one social interaction, but any more people and I get uncomfortable and tired very quickly. When we had lockdowns I was the happiest I have ever been, I was able to just stay at home for months on end with almost no socializing and plenty of time to read. >projection
You say it's projection as if that's some hidden truth that completely invalidates everything said. What you seem to think is a groundbreaking insight is actually kind of a "well, no shit" moment. Yes, I absolutely was projecting into that poster what is a pretty common experience for young people who try to think about and understand the world. The problem is that you do end up thinking you understand it. Nobody does. We all just come to terms with it in different ways.
>A mental illness can be real in a certain sense, and someone can be using it as an excuse
Yep. You understood the point. Some people will use excuses. An excuse can sometimes be valid, and sometimes a mental illness can actually be a good explanation for certain behavior. Sometimes there'll be a mix of excuses and genuine disability. Sometimes one or the other will be more prominent. It's a gray area. At this point, it seems like a silly point to drive home, but the existence of a very broad gray area excludes the possibility of the kind of all-or-nothing thinking which characterizes not an immature person but an immature thinker.

In my personal case, it doesn't interfere too much with my life, it's just that my preferences are very different from what most people's expectations are. This is why I tend to shy away from that label, because I know real autists who are literal spergs who can't even speak to other people and can't take care of themselves, so it seems almost comical to use the same label just because I have a strong aversion to certain situations.
