The man is faker than an instagram thot's ass.

Can't think of anything about the rural poor, but The Road to Wigan Pier by Orwell is still relevant when it comes to the urban working class.

this kind of thing was the beginning of my break with leftism. i was a super marxist in college, and one day i was chilling with a marxist professor from the english department, going to a protest or a conference or something, and they were talking about how we can't expect working class people to do stuff like complete school or not do drugs or not have kids at a young age etc. like it was some kind of caste determinism, but i guess cuz i'm white she just assumed i wasn't working class, and i just remember thinking "you would never let YOUR kids behave like that, why are you withholding the key to your middle class success from them?" i stayed marxist for a couple more years, but that was the first time my mind was like something isn't right here

The Hillbilly Elegy phenomenon was about the privileged elite wanting to be reassured that poor people deserve their suffering and Vance sold it to them for a fortune.

Never read Vance but everyone should read Lasch.

I'd rather Republicans elect a guy who wrote an actual book (that isnt some ghostwritten vanity piece like Trump's books or crude sensationalism a la Coulter/D'Souza) than someone like Tommy Tuberville (ex football coach, Alabama senator), Boebert, Marjorie Taylor Green who are all unironically on the same intellectual tier as trailer park dipshit rednecks.

Christoper Lasch, Revolt of the Elites and the Betrayal of Democracy has surprisingly good discussion of the rural vs. urban conflict

Because it's the inevitable result of mass democracy.

What an absolutely dogshit political system. Socrates in the Republic is completely right about democracy. It does nothing but cause confusion and encourage demagogues. I wish America was an aristocracy.
