Funny you brought that up - I've made some great stride on it, even between the fuckfest of job hunting and preparing my schedule for school. A lot of my time was put into fleshing out that whole first part because I originally just saw it as him just living his life in that dark room - I needed to pick out and lay down what the actual movement of the story would be, including flashbacks, memories, or just objects in question generally.
