A german guy who wrote some interesting sci-fi in the early 1900's but whose ultimate love was Glass architecture. This book is about why every city would be better if every building was glass. It talks a lot about how good sunlight is for you and other benefits of glass buildings.

Cities are not efficient. Cities are not sustainable. Urban zones - building, growing, and perpetuating them - are the #1 cause of every problem that exists, from environmental to social to financial.

If you disagree, it's because you have listened to propaganda telling you to cluster into cities and hive yourselves like insects there, so that you are easier to abuse, as that is the only efficiency an urban zone provides.

By these standards the maximum sustainable size of a city is around 20.000-30.000 souls and absolutely no apartment buildings.

Glass architecture is fucking hell when there is a lot of sunlight.
Even in winter when the sun is shining, rooms with large windows will be way too hot, and when the sun isn’t shining, the glass tends to be cold, unless it is double or triple paned and insulated.
To use a lot of glass, you need way better climate control systems than with masonry or lumber.

As someone more interested in understanding NYC as the first case study for the implementation of "neoliberal" policies, Fear City is a better rec than Holtzman's Long Crisis. Both unravel how failed municipal government gave way to the bankruptcy fiasco ("Ford to NYC: Drop Dead) that allowed corporate/free market-oriented governance to fill the void. Holtzman spends lots of time talking discussing the reaction on the ground. In other words, conflicts between intra-city actors like unions, racial groups, political elites, and so on. Fear City shows the takeover of the Big Apple from the powerful agents behind the scenes. It's very much a "Shock Doctrine"-esque book.

I love contemporary trad architecture but Christopher Alexander is overly sentimental, basically trying to found architectural theories on the basis of “I know it’s good architecture because it makes me feel warm and fuzzy”. It makes for boring reading and bad theory. (RIP nonetheless).

Despite that Robert Venturi was an awful architect, he was a much better writer about the complex relationships within classicism. “Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture” is probably the most meaningful book on Classical architecture ever published in the modern day.

Yeah Delirious New York is good. Probably the most /lit/ arch book I’ve read in that it really has fun with its story telling and prose, and sets out to tell a very eccentric history of architectural / urban development. It has some great stories.
