In the next year I will either learn programming with a series of classes and projects or write my first novel. I won't have time for both.
I am interested in both for different reasons, programming as a way to switch to a new career from my dead-end local government job, and the novel to finally make good on my interests in writing going back to my teen years and studying English in college.
So, write code or write literature for the next year? What does /lit/ think?

I studied computer science, got a decent diploma, wrote software in Pascal, C and C++ for 30y (22y commercially). It's slowly ruining my health, too much work, not enough people to do the job, management doesn't understand the development cycle, customers expecting work and features for free, treating you like crap, you have to do trivial work for people who can't really use a computer but work in the industry anyways.

The question is:
How much did you make?

Taxes a horrifying for independent developers.
After taxes, only around 45000 Euros a year. And then there's equipment cost, transport and hotels.

People who ask that kind of question never actually do what they say.

programming - I work remote and can write 10 hours a week just because of flexibility. Also, if you have never written a novel and are a nobody, quite literally everyone in the world doesn't care. I'd recommend maximizing your capacity to write over decades not the next year.

I'm making 65 Euro as an independent in embedded Linux/C++/Qt and Image processing with OpenCV after 20y, pretty sure I'm under-selling.

Europe is garbage for wages. Have you looked into doing anything in Switzerland? They pay US wages for namebrand plaves. Same with Luxemburg and Lichtenstein (assume Kraut)
