I'm walking down a busy street in Brixton. The sights and smells are obscene; a potent combination of Caribbean curry, incense, and marijuana. I have no memory of how I made it here. I sat down to watch Question Time on the BBC and I assume I entered a fugue state. I'm trying desperately to find my way back to Mayfair without making it seem like I am lost, for I can tell the locals are ready to pounce. Finally, I see a bus, and I can sense in my heart that it is heading towards the general idea of West London. I am about to hail it when I see a hoodie-wearing youth leering at me out of the window at a distance of 50 paces; he is a foreigner. I nearly have a panic attack. The bus flies past me and I spin, confused, and the sounds of the vegetable market stalls street food vendors becomes louder and louder, and a man with an accent asks me how I am, and I spin yet more, all the world blurring into a dream of Dante; and yet, from this blur, I am charmed by a type of songbird; I hear, above all the cacophony, a confident yet conservative ring of a bicycle bell. I am stabilised from my confusion, and I manage to focus at the source of the sound. Like an Arthurian vision, a cyclist appears, pedalling as if upon clouds. It is none other than the Hated Peter Hitchens.
"Wha-?" I say, but Mr. Hitchens - I know he prefers it if you call him that - stops me, and he smiles.
"It seems you've fallen afoul of a wrong turn in London. I'm here to help."
He takes out a spare helmet and high-visibility vest from his smart back-pack, and hands them to me. I put them on without question. I digs in his jacket pocket, and takes out a spare pair of bike clips.
"Here - put these on around your trousers. You can never be too careful."
I follow Mr. Hitchen's command, and stand on the rear-wheel pegs on his bicycle, and he assertively indicates to the pedestrians with his left hand, and pedals. Not long into our journey, heart nearly breaks with love - he has fitted these ridiculous pegs on his bike... just for me.
