I'm looking for some (non-pornographic) books that involve a romantic relationship between a human male and non-human female as a substantial plot point. And when I say non-human female I don't mean "a human with pointy ears that lives a long time" or "alien that looks exactly like a human but has wrinkles on their nose so that makes them actually an alien", I mean a dragon or a werewolf or Lovecraftian tentacle beast or a sentient spaceship or something. I'm currently reading Mercedes Lackey's "Obsidian Trilogy" on the basis that the generic chosen one boy hero winds up in a relationship with a demon girl that looks sort of like a tiefling, which could stand to be a bit more monstrous, but at least she couldn't be mistaken for a human, what with the horns, hooves, and red skin.

I finished this one today based off a recummendation here. Despite a decent start actual smut failed to materialize in any reasonable amount, quite disappointing. That said the physics, politics and for the most part even the economy were reasonably well crafted and were decently internally consistent, better than most space operas. The audio book narration was excellent. The pacing was decent, the battles were somewhat better than average. I wish the big reveal at the end wasn't foreshadowed so fucking hard. MC was was OP with a get out of any situation gimmick and plot armor so thick to took any thrill out of the danger, that can be hard to wright out of a single POV narrative but IDK, try harder. That said she didn't come off as too much of a marry sue, and she was cute and likeable, I wish she was more cute and funny instead.

I get the vibe that the author is a channer. Also he's a fucking lazy bastard. He suckles at the teat of those subscribe star patrons who fork over ~$50k a year for the pillage of reading an unpublished chapter a month. Five years and so sequel, three years behind schedule on the indicated release date. I fucking hate portion/subscribe star. We need to pay authors just enough to keep them hungry so they keep working and reward them only for publishing. You make it too easy for them and they become unproductive.

Overall I give this book a B+, I consume around 1000 pages per day and I've already read all the really good sci fi, this was decently better than average but still not great. Thanks to the anon who recommended it, unless that was you William in which case get the fuck off here and get back to work.

I will spend hours looking for a good book, worrying about also getting a good deal on said book is just too much overhead. If I can get it at my library then I frequently do. If I cant then I find it by other means and rarely does that include paying for it past what I pay for KU.

VLC phone app has a rewind ten seconds feature for audio books. I can also pause and unpause with a click on my bluetooth earbuds. Usually I only have a problem when I am falling asleep, but also nothing is more comfy and falling asleep to a good story, I just have to rewind a bit in the morning.

Alt-Earth with WWI technology. There's magic that consists of powers called souls that dwell in people. These "ensouled people" have a single power that ranges from being able to see farther, increased physical durability, or being able to shoot fire out of their hands. When one of these people die, their soul and thereby power is transfered to a random living person. These powers alter the way the world works and how civilization functions at a core level. the author goes hard with the world building, with epigraphs, fake newspaper clips, and even propaganda flyers.
I don't want to reveal too much about the plot, but it does start out very slow. If you do decide to read it, try to make it to chapter 30 at the very least.

Horus Rising probably, or maybe Eisenhorn. Posthumans being cunts to baseline is common in 40k novels, but it's usually not the focus of the story compared to something like Red Rising.
Or read up on a 40K faction that you find interesting, then delve into the books regarding that faction. For example, if you like Custodes, you read Watchers of the Throne and Master of Mankind. If you like Alpha Legion, you read Head of the Hydra and Legion. Anything by Dan Abnett or Chris Wraight is good.

"Way of the Wolf" by EE Knight
Almost done with this first book in a 5-book series.
It was published in 2001.
It's about a post-apocalyptic world where vampires have taken over. But there's a twist, the vampires are extradimensional aliens. And they don't match the trope in many other ways.
It has horror and western elements.
Amazon say's it's mostly vampire horror, with some military science fiction thrown in.
Amazon rates it a 4.5
Goodreads rates it a 4
Lots of action. Most everything in the book seems original even though the book has a lot of well used tropes.
I'm liking it a lot.

Obliquely. There’s a lot more connection between the final two. But I think part of the depth of the series is his ability to craft these incredible worlds with characters you get attached to who then all die and their existence isn’t even known to the protagonists of the next book, but as the reader you know the star or black hole or wreck they’re looking at used to contain a teeming society. Nah dude, he read the bible, probably did some serious research; some of those demon names appear exclusively in the Old and New Testaments or the Jewish apocrypha. Nobody can pull the Mesopotamian cultural artifact of Lilith's aspect "Ardat-Lili" out of a surface-level Hollywood discourse on demonology, or portray Divine influence and appearance as the elusively terrifying force it is going by the banal sunshine and happiness American Protestant Santa Claus version of Heaven.

i don't recall demonology being considered important in the bible.

It also takes some liberties ie lucy's rebellion happens after humanity. first to be exiled where the watchers of the dead sea scrolls, then the pagan angels posing as gods, then lucy's crew.

> some of those demon names appear exclusively in the Old and New Testaments or the Jewish apocrypha.
God's Demon is from 2004. Semjaza was already an anime character by then m8. People have been digging gnostic myth for scary interpretations of god a chunk of the 90s already.

It's very much a creole work that mixed and matches late medieval european christianity with archeological interpretations of roman era levantine writings (dead sea, the less drug addled side of gnosticism, etc).

I supposed it's what makes it good. He's pretty much the first guy to take dead sea mythology in all it's seriousness instead of a namedrop or some irl metaphor for a urban-fantasy work (looking at you, vtm).

I really find myself agreeing with this as of late, when it comes to fantasy I do not want something that I can finish in a week or two, especially if I enjoy the world and characters, things like TWI are great precisely due to their lengths, you really feel a sense of belonging to the world you're reading through after a period of time.
I think it's the reason why most sci-fi & fantasy fans go look at fanfics or expanded lore once they finished a series, they just crave more of that world and 5 or 6 books are certainly not enough to deliver that to them.

>>either you have no life whatsoever or speedread the shit out of everything

Both desu. I do audiobooks at 3-4x speed. I wake up, put ear buds in, take shower with ear buds in (more or less water proof but I do go through like 4 sets a year). Drive to work with ear buds in, work job with ear buds in 90% of the time. Go home with ear buds in. Swap them out for headphones to catch up on my 4chans and youtubes for a bit (at 2.5-3.5x speed). For longer posts I use a read aloud plugin I have hotkeyed. I'll be reading one post while listening to another, all the while looking for new books to throw in the queue. Then when I'm bored of that I take off headphones and sometimes read on a physical or kindle book or I just put ear buds back in and relax or work out before going to bed. I really don't mind text to speech books, actually sometimes if the naration is shit on an audio book but I like the story I will switch to a text to speech version. I have a 6 inch kindle fire I pamper because I like it's text to speech. My kindle paperwhite has an absolutely insufferable text to speech mode for the blind and no way to get the original text to speech narration enabled. The kindle fire fits in my cargo pants but sometimes I will leave it at home recording books into audacity on my computer so I can just have it as an MP3.

Today I read the first two thirds of Fimbulwinter before being bored with it and moving on to Retired S Ranked Adventure read book one and am on chapter 22 of book two. I tried Fimbulwinter because I liked another book the author wrote but this series is unreadably bad and that's coming from a guy who will just plow through some of the worst shit out there.

I intermittent fast and only eat lunch on workdays.

I have three sets of working Bluetooth earbuds at all times, one is at home charging, I swap it out when I do my channing one is in the car and the other is on me.

Philips Performance PN402BK I legit get a consistent 12 hours of playback out of the.
Showering really fucks up the microphone, they claim IPX4 waterproof but never charge after showering it will fuck up the charge port, let it dry with the flap open a couple hours first and then it's fine.

Every day for the last three days I read ~100 chapters of a webnovel with each chapter being from 1100 to 1400 words, totalling ~125,000 words a day.
That's not even a lot, I've read more in a single "day" if you count times I've stayed up more than 24 hours.
Worst case was Worm, ~2 million words and I read it in 4 days. Brain felt like burnt rubber afterwards and the entire thing is more of a hazy fever dream than a solid memory, but I did it.
