20327665 No.20327665 [Reply] [Original]

hello. i finished breasts and eggs a week ago and I've been thinking about it a bit. I've only read it once, I don't know if that's enough to really know a lot about a book or criticise it but I'll just say it: I felt underwhelmed.

there's so much build up, I feel, and to what? to the protagonist making an absolutely abysmal decision for both her and her child? I'm not a traditional woman by any means but I believe children need at least one role model of each sex; where does the male role model in the end go? oh, he's away. he'll swing by sometime. maybe i need to reread it. maybe there's something I missed, something that justifies or at least explains why the protagonist does what she does, but as I see it the ending ruined her for me.

sorry to ramble. I've seen people praise the book for using Kansai dialect but obviously I wouldn't know because I'm reading it in English. I'd like to ask 2 things: is Heaven, or any of Kawakami's other books any good? is there any point reading them if they won't have the same meaning as they did in Japanese? Sorry for making this thread. Thank you.

why are you so terrified of having an opinion?

I couldn't bring myself to read a book with such an obscene title. Eggs... such a word has no place on the spine of a book. Horrible!
Why would the book mean something different in translation?

Japanese literature is, in general, underwhelming. Most Japanese authors simply ape Western styles or techniques. I hope books like these are better in the original.

Yeah, you missed a lot. Maybe literature isn't for you, anon. To be fair, this novel is a little bloated, and its original form (just the first section as a novella) is superior.

But yes, Heaven is good. Also she's pretty hot.

They're not, trust me. Japanese is an underwhelming language for depicting drama generally and rich imagery etc.

Every Japanese writer who is a woman seems to imitate Murakami.

She's got to be a good writer, look how cute she is.

But in all seriousness, she's definitely a female Murakami. So if you like that style she's for you.

Idk why, but i'm always turned off by books written by Japanese or Asian writers in general
