what exactly did he contribute, and why is it any useful or good?

Been seeing this guy's face for years still don't know who he is.

He didn’t read Kant so that his philosophy bros could crank out more mindless papers in metaphysics

I wish I could understand analytic philosophy, too bad I'm a complete fucking retard.

Kripke made some pretty important contributions back in the late 60s, the 70s, and the early 80s. He provided a new semantics for modal logic, and gave some new proofs important in modal logic as well. He (as did Barcan) argued that identity is necessary, not contingent, and showed the proofs. Then he gave a theory of reference based on his understanding of modality, identity, and essence. His theory of reference (the causal theory of reference) was also responding to issues with the older descriptivist theory. Moreover he suggested that we can pry apart necessity/contingency from aprioricity and aposterioricity, and he gave arguments and examples for that. He also argues that dualism is true. Lastly he discusses a skeptical argument about rule following inspired by his reading of Wittgenstein in the 80s.
>was it good
What he contributed is pretty good. The bigger problem with Kripke is that he never became a thoroughly systematic philosopher. Instead he's kind of a withering creep that sounds like Yoda locked up in the halls of CUNY. He doesn't do anything, he doesn't even teach, but there's gossip that says he will creep on girls' bedrooms or something, and he is an autist with a funny voice and weird ticks/behaviors. So he peaked in the 70s and since has sort of just become a ghoul holding on to existence but doing nothing for philosophy anymore, it's unfortunate because he was probably bright enough once that he could have made a philosophical system like some of his contemporaries (i.e. David Lewis) tried. Instead he's become reduced to a near non-existent. He may as well die by this point.

I'm pretty sure he never intended to become one and prefers to enjoy his life instead of desperately trying to write a magnus opus. (Doesn't he even say in N&N he mistrusts philosophical systems and thinks they arbitrarily press all pieces in their place and than quickly shoot a picture before everything falls apart only seconds later?)

Nevertheless, thanks for the nice post. I only wonder why you put all the effort in to answer to a single-line shitpost.

It's easy enough and there's a chance people respond and make the thread continue which is nice

Some weird in-joke. The same post asking about what Kripke has done and using the exact same picture has shown up here for years.

He also brings to attention some issues with belief that he thinks are overlooked. The 'puzzle of pierre' for instance.

We can forgive a man for making a useful
thing as long as he does not admire it. The
only excuse for making a useless thing is that
one admires it intensely.

So, in fewer words, he said nothing of significance. This guy is an embarrassment, he couldn't even represent Frege correctly in NaN.

At least I managed to understand Frege (Kripke couldn't say the same!).
